If you are new to homeschooling, just like me, then here are my top homeschooling books for beginners! These homeschool mom books encouraged me in so many ways and excited me for my homeschool journey.

My daughter is currently only one year old but we know that we will be homeschooling her for her entire schooling, if able to! I was not homeschooled myself, so it feels like a completely new world to me.

We’ve decided to use Rod and Staff as our homeschooling curriculum for the first few years, but I had no idea what other options and resources were available to homeschooling families before reading these books. Plus, I learned so much more about what goes into homeschooling mentally and emotionally!

Let’s check them out…

  1. The Call of the Wild and Free: Reclaiming the Wonder in Your Child’s Education, A New Way to Homeschool by Ainsley Arment

I absolutely adored reading this book! It is definitely my top pick of the homeschooling books for beginners and homeschool mom books because it brings the magic back to homeschooling.

Homeschooling is freedom. Freedom to explore, to learn how you chose, and do things your way!

This book covers everything around the topic of homeschooling, like different myths, different teaching styles, and how and why we do it. Plus this author has amazing resources on her Wild and Free website!

  1. Adventuring Together: How to Create Connections and Make Lasting Memories with Your Kids by Greta Eskridge

This was another book that I tremendously enjoyed reading. Our family has the “motto” you could say of “Jesus and Adventure.” Life isn’t boring when you live on a homestead and so adventure always seems to await us.

This book opened my eyes to how homeschooling can be an adventure too. There are so many opportunities at your fingertips, and the last thing you would want to do is re-create the sterile and boring classroom setting at home.

  1. You Are Your Child’s First Teacher, Third Edition: Encouraging Your Child’s Natural Development from Birth to Age Six by Rahima Baldwin Dancy

You won’t necessarily find this book in the homeschooling category, but for me, it must be included on this list of homeschooling books for beginners.

The fact is that homeschooling begins at birth. As mothers and fathers, we are teaching our children everything about this world as they grow and develop in it. I love that this book covers developmental learning stages starting at birth and then how to naturally support them, not force them.

  1. Teaching from Rest: A Homeschooler’s Guide to Unshakable Peace Perfect by Sarah Mackenzie

You may know this author from her other book, The Read-Aloud Family: Making Meaningful and Lasting Connections with Your Kids, another one of the wonderful homeschooling books for beginners!

This book spoke directly to my soul when I began reading it, and yet I’m not even considered a “homeschooling mom” just yet. My personality falls on the serious side. I’m not a jokester, I don’t like to necessarily goof around, and I’m not one to crack jokes.

I know that when I start homeschooling my daughter regularly that part of my personality will come out. Homeschooling will be taken as a serious matter to me. But this book reminded me that no matter how many goals, schedules, and worksheets I make, homeschooling is much more than that.

If you want your homeschool to be a restful and relaxing environment too, then this book is for you!

  1. Homeschool Bravely: How to Squash Doubt, Trust God, and Teach Your Child with Confidence by Jamie Erickson

This is one of the homeschooling books for beginners that hits the nail on the head when it comes to staying focused on the purpose behind homeschooling.

Homeschooling is hard. It’s not easy to be constantly giving of yourself to your children and meeting their needs in various ways. I’ve heard from so many the constant thought of just giving up and sending them off to school.

This book will help you reclaim the reason why you homeschool and bring you back to what truly matters!

Homeschooling should be filled with joy, and this is another book on this list of homeschooling books for beginners that will help you achieve that.

  1. Risen Motherhood: Gospel Hope for Everyday Moments by Emily Jensen and Laura Wifler

This book isn’t specifically geared toward homeschooling, but it is geared towards motherhood. And, all moms around the world “homeschool” their children in some capacity as they teach them about life.

My sister-in-law gifted me this book when I was pregnant with my first. It was such a refreshing read because it’s not about what to do and not do as a mother. Instead, it’s about shifting your perspective and how our walk with God can connect to our everyday motherhood dilemmas.

This is such a refreshing homeschool mom book to read if you just need some extra encouragement in the season you are in!
