To be honest, it’s hard to look back on August and remember all that happened on the homestead. That’s because our minds were focused on our baby the entire month. Here’s why…

Our Homesteading Journey – August 2025 Update

Meet Our Fourth Child!

Rudyard “Rudy” Reid Albert was born on August 31st! We are praising God for another son and a safe and healthy baby, along with a wonderful homebirth and postpartum recovery for me. He was initially due on the 7th of the month, so all month long, we were anticipating his arrival.

While it is normal for me to be overdue, we were never expecting to be this overdue. We were being wise and taking it day by day with our midwife to make sure he was healthy, but it was difficult on many different levels as time kept passing. It was certainly a time of waiting on the Lord and learning to trust Him even more. And the wait was certainly worth it! Praise God for this new addition to our family. Keep us in your prayers as we adjust to being a family of six now.

Meet Chickens Growing

August was also a month of our meat chickens growing up fast! We are now to the point where we move their chicken tractors each day to fresh grass, and they need a lot of food and water. In just a couple of weeks, we will be butchering them!

It has been discouraging having a few die along the way, but it is also to be expected. We should have close to 90 chickens to butcher in the end, out of our initial 120. It will be wonderful to fill the freezer again with pasture-raised chicken!

Rabbitry Closed

Our meat rabbit production is officially coming to an end as we have butchered all our breeders. There are two more rounds of baby rabbits to butcher next month and in the winter, but it won’t be a lot, unfortunately, as several of them have died. It will be nice to enjoy our last little bit of rabbit before saving our money for another farm animal in the future.

New Addition – Dump Truck

Landon was able to purchase a dump truck for the homestead this month, which has become so useful already. He’s using it to move firewood and dirt so far, but we will also use it to harvest all our apples pretty soon. He also purchased a new plow for the front of the tractor and a vintage fishing boat, both of which will prove useful!

Harvesting From The Garden

While the garden has become neglected and the grass is taking over, we still harvested a few things. We’ve been snacking on snap peas, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and green beans. The sunflowers and cosmos are also gorgeous right now!

The onions and garlic that were curing in the barn have been brought in and stored away for winter. We hope to still harvest some squash, too. I should also be able to save some lettuce seed next month.

Prepping For Fall

Tasks for fall are already beginning to pile up. That includes milling lots of wood, chopping wood for firewood, apple harvest season, hunting season, and butchering the meat chickens and meat rabbits. See you next month, as it will be busy!
