It’s no joke that I have “baby fever” right now!

After my husband and I got married 6 months ago it seemed to kick in almost right away. Not only were friends and family becoming pregnant, but I also strongly felt that it was the next natural step to take after marriage.

That’s because God intended for marriage to lead to childbirth. He naturally gave us the ability and instincts to become mothers and fathers after we become united as one in sex within the marriage covenant.

Even though I feel the desire to become pregnant now, our current situation calls us to wait, to trust God, and to lean into His timing for children. We currently prevent pregnancy with Natural Family Planning, which I share all about in detail in this blog post!

While my husband and I are avoiding pregnancy now, we hope to have several children one day. With the desire to become pregnant, my husband encouraged me to use that desire as motivation to pray for our future children.

I had never really considered that before. I remember praying for my future husband all the time in high school, college, and post-graduation; however, no one had ever mentioned praying for my future children.

It only makes sense though. I mean, why would you pray for your future husband and not your future children?

Maybe because it’s harder to envision your children when you can’t even envision your husband. Or perhaps because there are no resources to help you with this!

I have always found plenty of blog posts, articles, and resources online to pray for my future husband, but I recently found that there was very little to help me pray for my future children.

6 powerful reasons to pray for your future children

I firmly believe we should be praying for our future children in every season of life. If you’re a wife who has struggled with pregnancy, continue to pray for your future children no matter what the Lord wills. Or if you’re like me, a brand-new wife, who feels the urge to become a mother one day, you need to be on your hands and knees praying daily.

In fact, if you are still single but hope to become married and a mother one day then I encourage you to pray.

Praying for your future children is not an option – it’s a necessity.

To help you pray for your future children I want to share the prayers I have been praying, along with the reasons I pray.

Pray is an effective tool that is often overlooked. I am constantly reminding myself to pray more and I hope this encourages you to come before the Lord with prayer daily.

Let’s get started…

  1. Pray Your Children Will Know The Lord

You can’t save your children. Only God can save them from their sins.

However, as a future parent and mom, my ministry is to raise children that will come to know the Lord; love Him with their whole heart, soul, mind, and strength; and follow Him all the days of their life.

This scripture says it all: “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” 3 John 1:4 ESV.

Eternal life is the focus we need the have on this earth. Each day we need to live with an eternal mindset. Are you building up treasures on earth or treasures in heaven? Do you desire your children to make a name for themselves on this earth or proclaim the name of Jesus till they reach heaven?

Pray, starting today, that your future children will come to know the Lord with full obedience and repentance. Pray for your future children and their walk with the Lord. There will be no greater joy to experience as a parent.

  1. Pray That They Will Be Missionaries

When you pray for your future children, don’t only pray that they would come to know the Lord; however, also pray that they would be missionaries for the gospel.

Here is an example of a prayer that I have come to often pray for my future children:

“Dear God, I pray for my future children that you will one day bless me with, Lord-willing. I pray that they would come to know you, Lord, surrender their entire life to you, and go share your good news with all others they come in contact with.

I pray that they would be missionaries for your kingdom. Make them servants with strong faith, hope, and love, representing you in all their deeds and actions. I pray that my future children would be warriors for you. May they declare your name with great boldness, confidence, and a humble heart.

God, I pray that they would share the gospel with their co-workers, friends, and family. I pray that the church community they are a part of would equip them with the tools and resources they need to share their salvation and saving grace with those who do not yet know your name.

As a future parent, I pray that you would equip me, God, to lead my children by example. When I’m in the grocery store, may I have the boldness to pray for the cashier. May I have the strength to show my children what a servant’s heart is, like helping the elderly neighbor shovel her driveway. God, give me the strength to show your love to others when I am treated unfairly so that one day my children may do the same.

I pray that my future children would study your word each morning. Lord, may they pray to you in times or help and trouble so they become missionaries for your kingdom’s sake, whether that be locally or overseas.

In Jesus Name, Amen.”

I encourage you to pray for your future children as they become missionaries for the gospel, Lord-willing, one day.

  1. Pray For Your Child’s Future Spouse

As a parent, it’s easy to pray for your children’s future spouse because you know your child. You know their name, character, personality, defining attributes and you know what they need.

However, as a future parent, it requires even more trust and confidence in the Lord.

There are so many unknowns. I don’t know anything about my future children right now. I can have a name picked out, but that’s about it. It requires me to pray with an open mind.

However, it gives me so much assurance. It’s out of my control yet how comforting to know that it is not out of God’s hands. He holds the whole world in His hands, so surely, He has not just my future children in His hands, but also the spouse of my future child in His hands.

Pray your future child’s spouse today even though it’s hard to picture something so far off and in the distance. Pray that God would lead and guide each of them to faith in Him and then a relationship together, so they will one day fulfill the marriage covenant.

    1. Pray That They Would Be A Godly Leader

To be a Christian in this world, a bold Christian that stands up to the culture and holds strong values is not easy. You are different.

It’s hard to stand up for truth because it comes with pain and suffering in some form. The last thing the devil wants is for God’s name to be proclaimed. When you follow God’s calling to share the good news of Scripture with others, that Jesus came to save you from your sins, you will be attacked.

This could come in various forms. It could be verbal, physical, mental, etc. Yet, we should pray for these attacks on our future children.

Wait. You may be asking if you just heard that correctly, and yes, you did.

You see, God doesn’t call the Christian to an easy life. He calls you and me to a life of standing up for the truth which results in earthly and spiritual conflict.

If you desire for your future children to be saved, to be a missionary of the gospel, then you must pray for boldness in leading others on their endeavor.

When you pray for your future children to be godly leaders, you are praying for these attacks on them. Leading as a Christ-follower won’t be easy, but it is certainly necessary and perhaps the most honorable and humbling experience you may have as a Christian parent.

However, while being a godly leader won’t be easy, you can also pray for God’s protection, strength, and peace to surround your future child as they lead.

Start praying for their leadership today. The world is nothing short of lacking in strong godly leaders.

  1. Pray For Your Children’s Decisions

Your child will make plenty of decisions as they grow up. While many decisions your child will make will be based on how we trained our child as a parent, some decisions will be based on sinful motives.

Pray that your child will make wise decisions regarding each of these areas: sexuality, relationships, finances, intellect, family, social environments, career, health, and faith.

While we can’t control the decisions our future children make, we can protect each one through prayer.

I know as a mom, I will only want the best for my children; but, even as a future mom I still want to control their future in a selfish way. I want to be the best future mom I can be.

The only thing I can do now is to pray for them. Will you join me in praying for the decisions our future children will make?

Pray for wisdom in your future children that only God can give.

  1. Pray For Your Child’s Friendships

Lastly, pray that your child will be surrounded by strong Christian friends.

I know the Christian friends I have are fundamental to my overall spiritual wellness. If it weren’t for Christian friends and mentors in my life through its various seasons then I wouldn’t be who I am today.

They say you are the combination of the three closest people you associate yourself with. Or, I’ve also heard the analogy of someone sitting on a chair and another sitting on the ground: it’s easier to pull the person off the chair than for them to pull you up onto it. This blog post goes into more detail about this concept as well.

Basically, it’s easy to rub off on each other. We can pick up some else’s bad habits quite easily. It’s easy to make a poor decision when peer pressure is strong.

So, while it is important to have friends that are not Christians (I have several!), it’s even more important to have friends that are godly examples for you. We need to surround ourselves with people that will lift us up, encourage us in Christ, and help up walk closer to the Lord each day.

This is another area where you, as a parent, can set the example. I pray not just for my future children, but also for my own journey. I pray that God would surround me with godly friends and mentors. And, I ask that He would put other strong Christians with strong examples for me to follow in my life.

Pray for your future children. Pray that the friends they form will be formative, and not destructive, to their Christian walk.

There you have it. These are the 6 reasons I pray for my future children and I hope they encourage you to do the same, no matter what season of life you are in.
