There’s just something so whimsical, magical, and charming about a cottage cut flower garden. The messy yet beautiful look of it can’t help but draw you in!

After our family moved to our homestead this past year, I knew that I wanted a beautiful cottage cut flower garden in front of our tiny house.

But, building anything from scratch takes a lot of time, hard work, and dedication. Thankfully our homestead wasn’t completely raw land. We also have a barn and a couple of old outbuildings; one became the chicken coop and the other the base for our tiny house.

Moving from the city to farmland is certainly a learning experience! My husband and I have learned so much about homesteading just through experiences, but also through books! These chicken books, rabbit books, gardening books, home herbal remedy books, homesteading books, and more have all made the journey so much easier.

So, of course, before I begin creating my beautiful cottage cut flower garden, I checked out several books from the library.

These are the top 5 books that I am using to help me create my first cut flower garden and I hope they will be just as helpful to you!

Let’s check them out…

  1. Perennial Combinations: stunning combinations that make your garden look fantastic right from the start by C. Colston Burrell

There are a couple of goals I have with creating my first cottage cut flower garden: making it look beautiful when it is still growing outside and having beautiful arrangements after I cut the flowers and bring them inside.

This book was a wonderful read to help me with my first goal. I want the gorgeous look that you see on Pinterest or in fairy-tale books, where the flower garden is the best accent to the cottage.

Perennials are a key aspect of any cottage cut flower garden because they keep returning year after year. But, it’s where you place those perennials in the garden that can make the biggest difference.

The different combinations of flowers together are what truly make a garden unique and beautiful. Plus, it’s also extremely important to the health of the garden plants.

This book will be a wonderful resource to me when I start planting all the perennials I purchase.

  1. Country Living Cottage Gardens by Toby Musgrave

This book will help you with the overall design of your flower garden. It reminded me of things to think about that I may have otherwise overlooked, such as the type of walkways, gates, and other romantic elements.

The pictures in this book are absolutely gorgeous and truly help with inspiration. It will help you blend your ideas of the themes you want to incorporate with the practicality of the specific flowers you’d like to grow.

It’s a great read to help tie your whole vision together.

  1. Floret Farm’s Cut Flower Garden: grow, harvest & arrange stunning seasonal blooms by Erin Benzakein

This book was inspiring. Erin tells her personal story of creating a flower business. And, while that’s not our ultimate goal here, it teaches so many positive flower growing techniques.

I especially loved how she described the different varieties of flowers. It was easy to quickly fall in love with so many of them!

I also have to recommend Floret Farm’s A Year In Flowers: the essential guide to designing gorgeous arrangements for every season by Erin Benzakein with Jill Jorgensen and Julie Chai. This book was another gorgeous read that gave me ideas on the flower bouquets I want to create one day.

This, in turn, helped me in the designing phase of choosing which flowers I’d like to grow each year.

  1. Roses and Rose Gardens by Claire Masset

While I’m sure some people have this book on their coffee tables, it certainly was not a light read for me. I believe it is essential to have several varieties of roses in a cottage cut flower garden.

Because I want to add lots of roses to my flower garden, I knew that I needed to learn more about them. I’m not sure if there is a book out there that is written by more of an expert.

I loved reading about the different rose varieties and seeing the pictures of them at the same time. This is a book I will be turning to more than once!

Claire Masset has also written another helpful book called Cottage Gardens: A Celebration of Britain’s Most Beautiful Cottage Gardens, with Advice on Making Your Own that is a must-read!

  1. The Layered Garden: Design Lessons for Year-Round Beauty from Brandywine Cottage by David L. Culp

Something very important to me in my cottage cut flower garden is that I can get blooms throughout the whole growing season. I don’t want everything to sprout in June and then be left with nothing in August and September.

Layering the flower garden meaning considering the bloom time and season of each flower in the garden. Each season will bring new beauty when it is designed correctly, and layered, as Culp teaches.

Ultimately, I want my garden to bring me joy. I want to see it each day and have it spark joy through its beautiful embrace. One of the key features to make this possible is to take the time to design it, considering the whole year, before diving in.

I’m thankful for the encouragement and perspective this book brings as I design my cottage cut flower garden.
