While this list is in no particular order, this is the first book I always recommend to anyone wanting to learn about caring for their chickens.
It is full of so many useful tips from what herbs can help your birds stay healthy or prevent disease, to how to specifically care for them during each phase of their lives.
I love that this book helps me use the natural products I already use, like my essential oils (link), herbs, apple cider vinegar, and so much more. I’ve already read it twice and cook the egg casserole recipe in the back all the time. This is a classic for me!

This is an older book that I was able to find at my library. And while it doesn’t seem to be in print anymore I found that it was packed with wisdom on raising your chickens or other poultry in your backyard.
Some key information I took from the book included which breed is the best to purchase for a high meat production, how to expand on the meat production by raising a healthy lock, and what it looks like raising that flock successfully at home.
Basically, it was a handy book to have to answer all my questions instead of endlessly trying to find reliable information online.

This was a very cute book to read! Not only did it include all the information I needed to get our homestead up and running but I found that was very handy in the chicken raising section.
This book was wonderful to read because it laid out all the information simply and easily, making it easy to comprehend. By keeping things simple, I could easily learn all the information I needed to know before our little chicks arrived in the mail.

The Complete Guide To Raising Chickens: everything you need to know explained simply by Tara Layman Williams
This is another book that lays things out simply, so they are easy to understand. At the same time, it also adds a bit more detail where needed. Just like the title says, it is a complete guide!
I enjoyed reading about the different ways you can build a chicken coop because it was super helpful to us to make sure we had all the necessary components inside it. This book will also touch on different things to do when a hen gets sick, the differences between breeds, and so much more!
This is a must-read when you consider the different chicken books to start your own backyard flock.

This chicken book was filled with information on things about chickens that I never knew about! I loved that in each chapter I was learning something new. Andy was very knowledgeable on each subject he shared in his book.
The pictures inside this book are beautiful and are very helpful in relating to the topics he is discussing. This chicken book is a great read for beginners as it covers all the basics and is very informative when you know absolutely nothing about a topic.
The Chicken Whisperer’s Guide is one of the chicken books to start your own backyard flock that I am so glad I read before my chicks arrived on my doorstep!

This is another chicken book that covers everything a beginner would need to know when starting their own flock! The illustrations and pictures are helpful in understanding the information clearly and determining what will work best for your family’s needs.
I loved that this book included how to raise other poultry as well, as often chicken owners will expand from chickens to ducks, turkeys, or other meat birds.
And unlike some of the other books, this covers butchering your chickens in great detail. It also talks about why butchering is a wonderful way to enjoy your chickens after their egg production slows. Or if your chicken has a pest problem, it may be more beneficial to butcher them than try to cure them.

It includes everything you could need but it isn’t overwhelming. The information is laid out in a detailed step-by-step process. This book is great to have on hand as the information will continue to be beneficial even after you are no longer a beginner.
I love that it goes into depth on different problems you may have with your flock and how to solve those problems effectively! This book is one of the chicken books to start your own backyard flock that will help you keep everything manageable.

Those books look like a lot of great resources. While you can find a lot of information online, I find things like this it’s really good to have a book on hand to have it all in one place and easily organized!

I love reference books when I am trying to learn something new, so everything is all in one place. This is such a great list of resources to get started. Having a little flock of chickens with fresh eggs everyday sounds amazing, but we aren’t allowed to have them where I live. We are starting a vegetable garden though!
