It seemed like all our friends decided to go south to a beach resort for their honeymoons, but we decided to the opposite and head straight north for a remote honeymoon in the mountains!

The mountains bring a sense of peace and calm that I have only experienced a few times in life and it was the perfect destination spot for my husband and I. We’re both introverted and love adventuring outside – camping, hiking, fishing – you name it, and we’re up the fun experience!

Basically, if you don’t mind the colder climate, the longer scenic drives, and the quiet foggy mornings, than a remote honeymoon is exactly what you need!

Additionally, a honeymoon to the mountains can be very cost-effective, memorable, and let’s not forget romantic!

Once you’ve realized that the mountains may be calling your name, there are a few things to consider planning an epic honeymoon in the mountains! Let me take you through each step that we went through to plan a perfect and magical destination honeymoon without spending a lot of money!

Let’s get started!

  1. Location & Lodging

The first step is picking exactly which mountains you want to visit. For our remote honeymoon in the mountains, we bounced around the idea of Colorado, Alaska, Montana, and Banff, Canada. We ended up settling on the Banff, Canada area because we had heard so many fantastic reviews from friends and family.

But, here’s the key…

We never went into the provincial parks or even the town of Banff. We stayed just outside of all the crazy tourism and boy, was it fantastic.

My husband did some research and found a tiny cabin, perfect for honeymooners, that we stayed in for four nights just outside of Golden, British Columbia.

Let me just say, he found a hidden gem!

We truly had the experience of a remote honeymoon in the mountains because we stayed right in the mountains, away from tourists and traffic. Where we stayed was called Bear Corner Bed & Bale and you can find all the info on it here (we very highly recommend it!).

Why was it so perfect? The space was the right size. We had a tiny cabin to ourselves with just the necessities – kitchen, couch, queen bed, table, and bathroom. It was so cozy and since we were spending a good amount of time adventuring outside, the cabin was not too small.

The cabin was on a horse farm, next to the owner’s house and another camping area. Being surrounded by horses, dogs, wildlife, and living next to locals made the experience feel remote.

Airbnb may have some great options too! To keep your trip cost-effective, make sure there is a kitchen area, so most of your meals can be made at the place you’re staying.

To have your own remote honeymoon in the mountains you must do some digging. This cabin wasn’t the first one we found, but it was a hidden gem. The website isn’t the most attractive and the pictures are not the greatest, so be sure you don’t judge a book by a cover. Lastly, look off the beaten path, away from tourist sites and towns.

With these in mind, you’re sure to find your own remote getaway! And if not, travel to Bear Corner Bed & Bale, you won’t be disappointed!

  1. Airfare

I’m going to be honest, finding cheap airfare is hard these days! I can’t say I have yet mastered it myself, but we did find a better deal than we expected.

We used the website Orbitz and found that it provided convenient ways to plan the honeymoon trip, like bundling our rental car with the flight.

I have also heard of skyscanner.com as a good option to find your flight when you have flexibility. Often, when you leave right after your wedding for your honeymoon like we did, you don’t have an extreme amount of flexibility.

If your wedding is on the weekend, you could wait a few days to fly between Tuesday and Thursday where flights tend to be cheaper. I recommend taking the time to lay out your options.

If you can’t afford the flight, consider road-tripping to a remote mountain area that is close by. Or, be spontaneous and use the wedding money that was gifted to you to buy the tickets right after, you never know what may pop up if you don’t mind being unprepared!

  1. Rental Car

For most mountain destinations, you will need a rental car to get to the remote area you are staying in. We had to fly into Calgary and then drive another three hours to get to our cabin.

That might be a turn-off for some people, but for us, driving further to avoid the busy areas of Banff and Jasper National Park made our honeymoon so much more magical. Especially looking back, we are so happy we decided to take the time to enjoy nature away from crowds, off the beaten path, and a rental car made that worth it.

From our personal experience, we would recommend a rental car. We probably made a slight mistake with not signing up for a bigger vehicle that could off-road in the mountains better, but thankfully, we were upgraded to one when we landed in Calgary.

You could do what we did, risk signing up for a smaller car in hopes of a free upgrade, which is quite common with rentals. Or don’t risk it and be sure you have a sturdy vehicle to handle the mountains.

Another thing to consider is the rental insurance, especially in another country. Often the rental insurance in the states won’t carry over to Canada. We did not have insurance for the rental car and thankfully God kept us safe. However, it was a big risk because of all the deer and wildlife. We could have easily hit an animal and had to pay for the damages.

This is just another option to consider and to not forget about, as you plan a remote honeymoon in the mountains.

  1. Food

Making your own food with help keep your honeymoon fun, romantic, and entertaining! It may be tempting to eat out every night if you have the money to do so, or to splurge because why no. However, my husband and I found so much joy in planning and making our meals together. We recommend it for your honeymoon.

When we landed in Calgary and picked up our rental car, we first went to the grocery store. We picked up $100 worth of food to eat for about 5 days and it was extremely cost-effective. One night we also ate out and had sushi.

By buying our own food and bringing it with us, it allowed us to stay remote.

We could enjoy each sunrise and sunset from our cabin porch. We didn’t have to always worry about what we were doing for our next meal. This let us relax and enjoy the time we had, eliminating some potential stress.

Plus, cooking together was a lot of fun! We really felt like we were beginning our lives together, just the two of us. No need to dress up and sit in a restaurant with a bunch of other people, instead we could fully enjoy each other’s company.

Take the time to plan out your meals in advance, purchase just what you need and no more, and make cooking together a fun activity. You will have an amazing honeymoon enjoy the calm, remote mountains and nature all around you!

  1. Activities & Entertainment

Another part of the reason that we recommend digging for a hidden gem before booking your stay, whether it is Airbnb, or somewhere else, is that it could determine the activities you participate in.

We loved that our cabin had horse trails through mountains, streams, woods, waterfalls, and so much more because we were able to go hike those every day. We didn’t even need to drive anywhere, which kept our honeymoon adventurous.

Bear Corner Bed & Bale also had horseback riding and one day we spent three hours riding on horseback through the mountains. We saw trout spawning, bald eagles flying around, and lots of little critters. The scenery was quite literally breathtaking. I’m so glad we brought a Go-Pro because it is fun to look back on that adventure that day!

We were guided by the owners of the cabin and could hang around the horse whenever we wanted because they were quite literally in our backyard!

When considering what activities or entertainment you want, I suggest a place with hiking areas and horseback riding if you are planning a remote honeymoon in the mountains!

  1. Length Of Stay

When you start researching the points above it will really depend on how long you plan to stay. I recommend only having one spot you stay in. Jumping around may seem like you can see and experience more, but to really enjoy a remote honeymoon I encourage you to just take in what you have around you.

It is refreshing and relaxing to know that once you get to your destination, you are there to stay. You can unpack and not worry about moving around until the trip is done.

I believe you will come to appreciate the beauty in nature that you have right around you. You will soak it all in when you stay in one place.

We stayed for four nights and five days but definitely wish we could have stayed longer. It was so hard to leave. While it was a good time frame, I recommend staying a week. It will be enough time to see and do what you would like without feeling too long.

Also, consider the time of year you are going. For us, the middle of September when we went was the perfect weather, not too hot and not too cold. School had started already and you could tell everyone in Golden, the town nearby, was going about their everyday tasks. It wasn’t ski season yet and it wasn’t the busyness of summer.

The time of year that you go may affect the length of your stay and is something to consider as well.

  1. What You Want Most From Your Trip

Overall, plan a honeymoon you will fully enjoy, that plays to both of your desires as a couple.

These are simply recommendations of what we found worked best for us and gave us a magical honeymoon we will never forget.

Discuss, what do we want most from our honeymoon? What is realistic and in the budget? What do we value and what is important to us?

If you are reading this, I am guessing that you value being remote, and so did we. Do not let this be negotiable. Find a remote area that beautiful, quiet, and charming. It may take some patience and digging but having a remote honeymoon in the mountains is worth it.

Let me know in the comments below if you have any other questions about planning a remote honeymoon. I’d be happy to help! Otherwise, enjoy the mountains and check back in later for more tips and adulting wisdom. (:
