If you are homesteading in a place where the temperatures drop below freezing, then you know how hard it can be to stay warm outside! Our family homesteads in the Keweenaw Peninsula, the top of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and the right winter homesteading capsule wardrobe is essential to survive.
Our chores on the homestead take up time each morning and evening, which means that no matter what the weather is outside, we have to feed our animals and care for their needs.
I’m still not sure that we’ve mastered the winter homesteading capsule wardrobe since new improvements to winter clothing seem to be released each year, but both my husband and I love the current pieces we have in our capsule wardrobes.
Let’s check them out…

What Is A Winter Homesteading Capsule Wardrobe?
Well, you’ve probably heard of a “normal” capsule wardrobe that has quickly become very popular, especially in the new minimalist trend that seems to be growing. It is essentially the idea of having only pieces in your wardrobe that you wear regularly and all work together.
It makes dressing for the day brainless because you know that each clothing item fits you properly, makes sense for the season, and, more importantly, is something that you enjoy wearing.
I actually find that it is easier to build a homesteading capsule wardrobe than any other type because more the pieces tend to naturally work together. This includes the colors, as most pieces are black, brown, gray, and blue or red. But also, they are all functional!
In your winter homesteading capsule wardrobe you will find that each piece you own serves a specific purpose, like keeping you warm or lasting for years through all the wear and tear.

What MEN Need To Create A Winter Homesteading Capsule Wardrobe
First, let me dive into my husband’s winter capsule wardrobe. I find his wardrobe is even simpler than mine as these are all pieces he wears throughout the week. He works from home, so his homesteading clothes are his everyday clothes, apart from some nice pieces for church or events.
His bottoms include two pairs of insulated fleece-lined hiking pants, a pair of regular hiking pants, a pair of overalls, and three pairs of work jeans.
My husband’s tops include three thick flannel shifts, several thin undershirts, and a couple of crew neck sweatshirts.
He also has snow accessories like hats and gloves, snow pants, and two winter coats, one that is slightly thinner and for outdoor work and another that is thicker and has less mobility. Please note that all the links to these products are the closest matches and some are not the exact items he owns, so I can not be 100% sure of their quality.
He needs items that will keep him warm on very cold days but also items that layer really well for when the temperature is a bit warmer, or he gets hot working on projects. A winter homesteading capsule wardrobe thrives on the concept of layers.

What WOMEN Need To Create A Winter Homesteading Capsule Wardrobe
My current role is a homemaker and stay-at-home mom. Part of that role includes feeding the animals each morning and evening, no matter what the weather.
For my winter capsule wardrobe, I prefer to have items that keep me cozy in the house while also being functional, but also warm enough to stay warm outside when necessary.
For my bottoms, I have two jogger pants, one pair of insulated hiking pants, one pair of yoga pants, and a pair of overalls.
My tops include two fleece-lined long sleeve shirts, three crewneck sweatshirts, two zippered sweaters, and two hoodies. I also have a couple of t-shirts for layering when necessary.
I also have snow accessories, scarves, snow pants, and two warm winter jackets, one of which is worn during all butchering days or rough homestead projects. My other clothing items outside of the homesteading capsule wardrobe include a couple of nice jeans and tops for when I go to town, church, or events.

How To Maintain Your Wardrobe
Keeping your capsule wardrobe as simple as possible is what makes it such a great resource to have. When you clutter it extra items like pants you hope to fit into one day or old sentimental items that you don’t actually wear that often, then your wardrobe becomes bogged down.
To love your wardrobe and enjoy your time on the homestead this winter, focus on only keeping pieces that are functional, practical, and that you love to wear.
Start by pulling all your clothing items out of your closet. Separate out the ones that you don’t wear around the homestead and want to keep nice for special events and set them aside. Then, go through each item and only keep it if it fits, is practical, and/or is essential! Donate what you no longer need.
Remember, only keep a few items! Less is more when it comes to enjoying your wardrobe and making it practical and easy.
Once you’ve narrowed down your items, look and see where the gaps may be. Then purchase those items from high-quality companies so that they last on the homestead for years to come!
How is your winter homesteading capsule wardrobe looking now? Let me know in the comments below, I’d love to hear how it’s going and what your favorite pieces are to wear. I love getting great recommendations from you guys!
