Children love reading books on things that they relate to! That means farm children love reading about the hard work they do each day from feeding the animals to making homemade jam.
I’ve noticed that when things are relatable to children it helps them understand the world around them better. We plan to use a homeschooling curriculum that has these same relatable features. Instead of curriculum having children learn math by counting people on the street in the city, they learn to count the number of chicken eggs in the coop!

This is a wonderful book for farm and homesteading children to learn basic skills in a relatable way. Those skills include learning the months of the year, the seasons, the cycle of life and death, and cycles of weather patterns.
It’s important to not hide reality from our children, such as loss, drought, and seasonal foods! This book is one of the books on farm life for children that depicts all these various aspects of farm life.

Little House On The Prairie is a classic story that I’m sure you have heard of before! I personally think that every child should read these books in their elementary years to learn deep and rich history.
Farmer Boy specifically is a wonderful book in this series for farm children. These stories are from a real historical character bringing a biography of what life was like on the American frontier.
It gives perspective to our children, and even ourselves, on how easy we truly have it nowadays. We have electricity, running water, and indoor plumbing! At the same time, these books will captivate your children as they still experience some of the same struggles Laura and her family faced on the farm.

This story takes place on a Wisconsin farm where a girl finds a silver thimble. Afterward, so many things begin turning around for the better. The drought ends, a new barn is built, and new friendships grow!

Another book from the olden days, “Little Sister” is a daughter who has a strong devotion to her older brother Laddie and tells his story. It is an older book with lots of relatable highs and lows of growing up in the country.
The story itself contains a love story between Laddie and a girl next door. However, the girl’s dad does not approve and the story unfolds. It leads to forgiveness and acceptance, making for a wonderful story.
When reading this book you will discover everything that comes with family life – struggles, bonds, learning from one another, and above all love! This book also beautifully depicts nature, which any farm family can appreciate.

Caddie is a beautiful girl that is extremely brave. With her tom-boy tendencies, she befriends Indians and goes on many incredible adventures. This book is also set in the late 1800s and brings a wonderful sense of outdoor fun to children!
A similar book to this would be Sarah Plain and Tall, a classic story that I enjoyed reading as a child! These are some of the books on farm life for children that bring real farm adventures to life! Despite the character’s struggles at times, there is so much joy in living on a farm!

This trilogy cannot go unmentioned! While boys may tend to enjoy it a bit more, it can certainly be enjoyed by the whole family.
The series follows a boy who runs away and learns to survive on his own, even befriending a falcon. Without spoiling too much, it is truly a coming-of-age story that all young children can relate to.
It truly sparks children to experience outdoor adventures of their own and become knowledgeable in survival skills. All of these are extremely important in homesteading and farm life!
