Did you know that there are some wonderful books for homesteading children that are specifically relatable to them? These books allow children to embrace their country lifestyle easily!

Now that I have a couple of toddlers on the homestead, I found myself wanting to read picture books, and soon chapter books, to them that they related to. There were so many books at the library that just weren’t representative of our lifestyle.

And while it is certainly good to read books from multiple perspectives, I found that the books that had chickens, rabbits, and gardens really got my children excited! Except there wasn’t a great place to find these books recommended.

I found myself wishing there was a book list of farm books for homesteading children, so I created one for all of you!

Let’s check them out…

  1. Ox-Cart Man by Donald Hall

This book tells the story of a man that fills his cart pulled by his ox with everything they had handmade over the course of a year. From sheared wool to carved broom handles and food that is grown in the ground, he brings it to market to sell or trade it all.

This book highlights so many of the things we handmake and grow ourselves on the homestead. Examples include taping maple trees for maple syrup or dipping wax to make candles. All of these provisions could be sold at a farmer’s market, just like the ox-cart man.

Your children will enjoy this relatable story and appreciate that it is one of the books for homesteading children that teaches bartering and providing for your family.

We live in the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which means we get tons of snow every single winter! In the fall we have to diligently cut wood, put up food, and prepare for the long months ahead of brutal cold and snow cover.

This beautiful book tells the story of a family that does the same things as they prepare for winter! From collecting eggs from the chickens to ordering seeds out of the catalog, this book reminds us that our tasks on the farm in the various seasons are extremely important.

Even though it’s hard work to live on the farm, it pays dividends in the future. Children can understand that their work is meaningful when they read this book!

  1. Farmhouse by Sophie Blackall

I absolutely adored this book the first time I read it! It accurately depicts a large family living in an old farmhouse. Things aren’t perfect, they are falling apart and children are fighting at times.

However, what remains is love and memories that can never be destroyed. Even after the family in the farmhouse grows up and moves away, the farmhouse still contains their family’s heritage.

This is one of the books for homesteading children that truly depicts what family relationships happen on the farm or homestead. Your children will appreciate their siblings and the love that grows at home when enjoying this book, even if not the first time they read it.

  1. Building Our House by Jonathan Bean

We purchased our 80 acres of homesteading land with only a barn and an old shed on it. My husband turned the old shed into a temporary tiny house and now we are building a house on our land!

Several homesteading families I know have done the same thing. This book is a wonderful addition to any family library where children are witnessing their new house being built. It will truly help them appreciate the house-building process.

And, the book will serve as a wonderful memory when they look back at the process after the house is complete. Children can learn to love the uniqueness of building your own home on your own dream farmland alongside you!

Even if you don’t have a barn on your homestead or farm, but especially if you do, this book is a treasure to read! The story of a boy who grows up in a barn and returns to it displays so many beautiful emotions.

These emotions include community love, peace and security, and the value of hard work. It reminds us that as much as we desire self-sufficiency in our homesteading journey, there is always a need for the community!
