If you haven’t checked out my first blog post: The 7 Best Books For Preppers On Every Preparation Topic then be sure to do so first! This list of books for survival is an extension of that post, as there are just so many good ones to share.
Survivalism and preparedness become easier and easier the more I read and then the more I practice the skills I read about!
It’s a journey. It takes time, but thankfully, if you start now you’re already farther along than you were before! And farther along than most others, I may add.
Let’s check out the rest of the books below…

I can relate to this book in so many ways. Not only did the author also move to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and live off-grid, but she also wrote a beautiful poem at the beginning of this book called “A Women’s Ode To Prepping,” and you just have to read it!
Deborah also discusses the difference between a working pantry and a retreat pantry, and why both are necessary as they function together. She goes over what to store in each, including how to store them.
One downside to the book is the lack of freeze-dried items and recipes, which is simply because this book was written before the home freeze dryer became popular on the market.
If you are looking for wonderful recipes to cook from your pantry, then this is the book to have!

If you feel overwhelmed by prepping and survival preparedness, then in my opinion this is the best book to start with! It breaks down the terminology and various skills to have in such an easy way.
The best part about this book is you can follow it like a checklist for one year. Each week begins with a shopping list, then a few pages on the skill to learn or task to do, and then lots of pictures to help you do the same.
This is one of the books for survival that we have really been enjoying in our house!

If you have a family, then this is a wonderful book to begin with. It covers topics from storing enough food to taking care of children, and even making sure you are all on the same page!
Being prepared for the worst needs to be something that the whole family is on board with. Everyone needs to know the plan, where supplies are, and how you will approach different disasters.
I love that this book also covers mental health and how to help children specifically in these situations! It’s one of the books for survival that doesn’t sugarcoat the mental and emotional aspects behind it.

This book is much thinner than I was expecting, especially compared to most of the prepper books that I have read. In fact, this book is more of a handbook filled with bullet points.
Of course, it talks about food and water, but what I love is that it also talks about different drills to perform regularly so that you know how to handle each situation.
The second half of this handbook is all about organizing your home and decluttering, which is really unique. Our family lives a very minimal lifestyle and I do feel like it plays into our homesteading and self-sufficient lifestyle.
To make your prepping journey easier, consider minimizing your items and getting your house in order first!

Does having a year’s worth of food stored up scare you? Intimidate you? Sound ridiculous?
It did to me at first, but after reading prepping books and books for survival like these, I understand the importance of it. You want to be prepared for anything and everything.
I love the detail that this book goes into on every specific food and category. It also talks about how to store the food properly so that nothing is wasted, and money isn’t lost! That includes handy tips on food rotation.
Ever since we purchased our home freeze dryer, I have been able to put up more food than I ever imagined. While dehydrating and canning are essential skills to have, a freeze dryer is a better solution for many reasons, including long shelf life.
While this is one of the books for survival that doesn’t discuss freeze drying, I love that it includes everything else. It even has recipes in the back!

This book is huge! It is about the size of my lap and is filled with beautiful illustrations and recipes! It has so much detail on canning equipment, regulations, and tips and tricks that I never knew before.
I am so excited to try more of these recipes as it seems they have a recipe for just about everything! I know that when I make a recipe from this book, it is one I can trust.
