My husband and I are approaching five years of marriage in just a few short months! We’ve been through a lot which is why I wanted to share the best marriage books to read after you’ve been married for five years!
I have to admit I haven’t read all of these books yet, but I do hope to soon. I’ve been recommended most of them or encouraged by the same authors in their other books. Marriage is certainly something that only can thrive when it is based on the Lord!
These Christian marriage books are wonderful to read after you’ve been married for five years because they realign your heart again to what matters. After a few years, we tend to get into bad habits, say annoying phrases, and lose interest in that initial infatuation we had with our spouse. Here are some wonderful reminders of how we can be more intentional with our marriage, starting right now!
First, evaluate what your marriage currently looks like. But don’t start pointing the finger at your spouse. Instead, look at your own heart. How can you serve your spouse more? What little things can you do each day that will add up to a lasting impact? How can you love your spouse more than yourself?
It’s not easy looking at our sins but it sure is necessary. These books help us do just that. Here are some great marriage books to read after you’ve been married for five years!

I love the books Gary Thomas writes on marriage. They are very simple to understand and implement into your own life. If you read this blog post of mine, then you know that I enjoyed his book Sacred Marriage, but I read that when I was only engaged.
In Cherish he writes, “Sacred Marriage was about how God can use the difficulties inherent in every marriage for a good purpose. Cherish is about how God can give us hearts to delight in each other so we can enjoy a marriage where we sometimes even feel guilty because we have it so good.”
This is one the of best marriage books to read after you’ve been married for some time because it helps you take a step back and see what needs to be changed. This book touches on action steps behind the common advice of “love your spouse more.” Yes, we need to show love more in various ways, but “cherish” is a term that goes even deeper than love. It involves so many aspects of love, which is why I think every married couple should read this book!
Each chapter of this book has a summary of what you learned and then discussion questions about the topic. It is a great book to read with your spouse and also a great option for small-group discussions.

The 5 Things To Pray For Book Series by Melissa Krueger, Rachel Jones, and others offers help on praying for various topics. I especially love that there is one how to pray for your spouse!
The books take scripture passages and show how they influence the way we pray. The other books include topics on prayer for parents, your city, your world, global crisis, your heart, your suffering friend, your kids, your church, and the people you love. I appreciate the new perspectives offered on prayer and refreshing ideas on what to pray for each day! The most simple and effective thing you can do for your marriage is to just be intentional about praying for it! Try using this book as a guide.

Every couple in a marriage should read this book, whether facing storms now or preparing for ones in the future! Because every single marriage faces trials and needs encouraging reminders of how good God is through it all.
But also, we need practical wisdom on how to look to God, not your spouse, when specific situations arise. Maybe it’s child or job loss, chronic illness, intimacy, loneliness, or infertility. This book covers so many topics, even specific chapters for husbands and wives as the authors each share their perspectives. Each chapter ends with reflection questions, prayer, and journaling space.
I especially appreciate the last two chapters: The Glue That Keeps You Together: Forgiveness and The Best Is Yet To Come. Forgiveness and growing together on the journey are certainly things that have impacted our marriage in the last five years!

How incredibly powerful is this line from the authors: “We have discovered in our relationship that beauty results when we choose to no longer fight against each other in a personal battle but alongside one another in a spiritual war.” It’s a wonderful reminder that we are on the same team with a greater eternal mission at stake!
After five years of marriage, you have probably learned this the hard way. I know I have at times! I’ve been immature and reacted out of anger as I came to terms with my sin right in front of my face. If you are looking for a practical book on marriage, then start with this one.

I hate to admit it but my husband is almost always the first to admit he was wrong, ask forgiveness, or say “I forgive you.” On the other hand, I’m too stubborn and weak to respond to my sin so quickly. Because I wasn’t shown this example enough growing up I find that I need even more guidance.
We have to deal with our sins to have a healthy marriage and we have to resemble the repentance and forgiveness of Jesus when dealing with it. While this book is short it is mighty. You will have practical Biblical wisdom given to you while reading it, including a day-to-day checklist.

Becoming the Woman Of His Dreams: 7 Qualities Every Man Longs For by Sharon Jaynes
I love how practical this book is! It gives Christian, Biblical women seven qualities to focus on providing for their husbands. They are praying for him, respecting him, adoring him, initiating intimate friendship with him, safeguarding your marriage, encouraging him, and sexually fulfilling him.
What makes it so practical is that at the end of each of these sections, she has a list of 25 things you can directly do to start implementing these principles! P.S. Don’t forget to read the author’s other book about how to pray for your husband from head to toe.
