When we decided it was time to move on from our tiny house and build our forever home on our homestead, I knew I wanted to incorporate as many toxic-free products as possible! That included both building materials and everything inside of our new house.
My husband decided that he would build the house himself, only hiring out the pouring of the foundation! He is even creating his 2x4s, flooring, doors, and more with his mill.
As I write this we are halfway through our house-build process! After we decided to build our own house I began researching everything regarding low-toxins and toxic-free products. I started by reading this book all about how to build a toxic-free home! While we didn’t implement all the things included in this book (mainly because we are on a budget and limited by time and manpower) it was so helpful to learn about what building products could potentially be harmful to our health.
As I learned about the products that are toxic versus the products that are safe for my family in our new house, I kept a running list. I want to share this list here with all of you because I know it could be extremely helpful to have all the information in one place. If you have something to add to this list, please leave a comment below!
I will include the item, the best toxic-free products to swap, and what we ended up going with if we have made that decision already. I will also include lots of links to other blog posts I gleaned from and places to find these products. While we can’t have a completely toxic-free home, no one can, I like to make wise purchases when the appropriate time comes to make them! I hope this encourages you to make these same swaps slowly over time.
Let’s check them out…
