As our children grow up, my husband and I desire to teach them so much. One thing we recently were on the hunt for was books about guns for kids to read. But, who knew there were so few resources!
Considering how important gun safety is and how polarizing our views of guns have become in culture over the years, we thought it would be easy to find a picture book that taught about the different types of guns and how to handle one appropriately.
However, our local library had no options so we looked elsewhere. Here are a few books about guns we found and have read to our children! In the future, we hope to create a wonderful picture book that has even more details about guns and gun safety so more children can be educated on the topic.
Let’s check them out…

Guns – What You Should Know by Rachel Ellenberg Schulson
While this is an older book now, it is still a great book to read with your young child. It talks about how children play with toy guns like water guns or their hands, and see guns used in TV shows or movies.
The book then explains the differences between guns, how bullets work, and how bullets can travel fast. It explains how guns can hurt people which is why there are laws around their use. The book says children should never play with guns and accidents can be deadly.
It ends with three rules on what to do if you ever find a gun: it is not a toy, find a grownup, and don’t let anyone aim a gun at you. Even reading this book with my three-year-old I saw that she was able to understand the implications of gun safety! This is one of the books about guns for kids that it very relatable and to the point.

This book focuses on making a distinction between play toys that look like tools and real tools. Real tools are not toys – knives, hammers, saws, chainsaws, and guns. I appreciate the illustrations of the different types of guns since children might only be aware of one kind.
The book explains to children why they need to be careful around guns. It also breaks down the different parts of a gun. The book is super simple and straight to the point! Any child can glean something about gun safety from this book.

This is not a book specifically geared towards children, but I still encourage you to read it with them, or simply flip through the pictures. It shows how guns have evolved and what they were used for.
It will open up wonderful conversations around the purpose of guns, how they work, and how they have been used for both good and bad throughout history. The pictures are excellent and it is very educational. The more children are educated about guns, the less likely they are to become curious when they come across a gun and think to play with it.
Another similar book but older is An Illustrated History of Guns and Small Arms by Joseph G. Rosa and Robin May. It has tons of images, making it a great way to teach children the differences between guns and how they fire.

This is another simple book to read to children about guns. It explains a variety of careers and applications of how and why guns are used – policeman, paintball, security guard, hunting, protection, soldier, etc.
It also talks about being safe around guns and how to respond if you see one! While the pictures are not high quality, I do love that they educate on all aspects of guns for everyone reading the book.
