March was a fun month because we celebrated another birthday, went on a little trip, started getting lots of eggs, and experienced a bit of spring!

Here’s what projects got done too…

Our Homesteading Journey – March 2025 Update

New Nesting Boxes

Our chickens haven’t been laying in several of our nesting boxes because they are too small for their liking. Thankfully, Landon was able to build a whole new section of large nesting boxes in our main coop right before egg production picked up.

The chickens love their new nesting boxes and lay in them like pros. We are getting about 5 dozen eggs daily now and are anxious to get our egg stand set back up for the year. It was also nice to check off a project from our list this year!

Getting The Mill Ready

Landon is going to be milling lots of wood again this year. He took down the temporary cover he had over the mill that was collapsing from all the snow we got this winter. Then he built a ramp to make loading the huge logs onto the mill easier this year.

Now, all we need is some warmer weather to melt the snow and get the mill up and running again!

Freeze Drying Eggs

While we wait for the snow to melt away, we are giving away our eggs to friends and neighbors or freeze drying them for back up food storage! It is so nice having our freeze dryer in our new kitchen. It makes things very easy to preserve and keep track of.

Hopefully, sometime in mid-April, we can get our egg stand back up on the corner and offer farm fresh eggs daily to our customers.

Traveling For The Weekend

When we were gone for a long weekend, our neighbors graciously fed our animals for us. It was a wonderful opportunity to see some family, take the kids to an aquarium and the zoo, and get away just before spring arrives.

Spring Is Almost Here

In just a week, we will start incubating chicks, then new chicks will also arrive in the mail. Plus, we will start breeding our rabbits again after they took a break all winter. It will also be time to check on the garlic in the garden and buy some onion sets. Plus, all the outdoor tractor projects will begin! It’s about to get busy on the homestead, and we can’t wait!
