I can hardly believe it’s the end of March already and we are celebrating Easter! We had a wonderful warm spell at the beginning of the month, and it was hard not to start planting seeds out in the garden! But the month ended with a snowstorm, which was disappointing but unsurprising. And we were also able to enjoy some time away together as a family this month which was quite refreshing!

Here’s what we have been up to in this early spring…

Our Homesteading Journey – March 2024 Update

Don’t forget to Pin this image for later!

Egg Stand Up Early

We were able to put our egg stand up extremely early this year! Usually, we can’t put it up until the end of April because of the snow load and cold temperatures. This year, we put it up almost on the first day of March!

We have record warm temperatures this winter and we aren’t complaining. Now we can start to provide our eggs to the community a bit early! We are getting over four dozen eggs a day now!

House Build Progress

Landon’s dad visited us for a weekend and put in the metal railing for our spiral staircase – it looks great! We also had the HVAC inspector stop by to help guide us in the exact placement of our wood-burning stove and chimney. Landon has completed most of the HVAC now and will install the chimney soon. Next is hooking up the water pipes!

Baby Rabbits

Unfortunately, we lost two litters of baby rabbits due to my poor planning. I didn’t think they bred with our new male as he was giving me trouble and I didn’t place the nesting boxes inside in time. We did have one large litter survive which was a blessing! Our grow-out rabbits are getting large and we will be butchering them next month sometime.

Starting Seeds

I wanted to get around to starting more seeds indoors but it is just getting too difficult in the tiny house. I need more lights, shelves, and trays, but most of all space! I hope to start more seeds indoors next month whenever the onions get planted outside. In the kitchen, I tried my hand at preserved lemons – fermenting in salt on the counter for a few weeks! I’ll have to report back on how they turn out.

Thanks for reading this month’s updates!
