Oh, how we love summer in the UP! There have been so many moments of sitting by the pond or being in the garden where I just feel so grateful for all the Lord has blessed us with. This time of year truly makes me appreciate it on a whole new level. Our souls feel refreshed this summer because we can stop to enjoy it instead of constantly being stressed like we were during the house build the last two summers!

Here’s the projects we tackled this month…

Our Homesteading Journey – June 2025 Update

Don’t forget to Pin this image for later!

Planting The Garden

June is planting month in our northern climate! There are few things you can get in the ground before June, so we filled up the garden with the rest of the seeds throughout the month. It’s also been so fun to have the kids help me with the garden this year, and they are learning so much about nature!

We planted green beans, snap peas, several lettuce varieties, several various flowers and herbs, a few tomato starts, cucumbers, squash, watermelon, and Brussels sprouts. We are hoping for a good harvest this fall, but also just a beautiful garden to enjoy.

Selling Eggs At The Farmer’s Market

I spent three weeks selling our eggs at the Chassell Farmer’s Market! While we do sell a few dozen off our stand every day, we had a surplus that needed to be sold, and the customers at the market delivered. It was fun to do the market again after taking a few years off and interacting with all the other vendors!

Moving Baby Chickens To A New Coop

Our new chickens this year were fully feathered and outgrew their brooder space. We decided to move to the room in the barn this year, where they also have outdoor access. So far, it has been working out great, and they love their new home!

Once they hit laying age in a few months, we will integrate them with the rest of the folk. We will also butcher our older hens that are 3 years old at that point, since these young chickens are their replacements.

Breeding Rabbits

I can hardly believe it but it’s time to breed our rabbits again! It’s bittersweet because this is the last time we are breeding them. After this, we will stop our rabbitry and save the money for new livestock next year. Perhaps pigs, sheep, or a beef steer!

We will certainly miss all those cute baby bunnies, the tasty meat they have supplied us, and all the rabbit manure for our garden. But, for now, this is the best decision in terms of productivity going forward.

Moving Dirt

Landon has finally been able to tackle some big dirt projects on the homestead. He is smoothing out various pieces of land with his tractor where dirt has piled up or the previous owners had left a mess. It is so refreshing to have a nice yard again!

Planting Trees

After his dirt moving, we were finally able to plant the trees we acquired back in May. I hope they survive, because we haven’t had success with trees before, and these aren’t quite thriving yet. The trees are a peach, two cherry, and a pear!

Time With Friends And Family

And finally, to end the month we are traveling to see lots of different family members and friends! It’s not easy to get off the homestead, especially in summer, but we are grateful for our neighbors who watch our animals and the homestead for us.

When we return, Landon will finish getting our chicken tractors ready for the meat chickens to arrive, and I will begin nesting because the baby will be on the way soon! See you next month!
