Spring is here! And full of the anticipation of summer that comes with it…even more so this year as we work towards finishing our house build.
Here are all the things we encountered this month on the homestead…
Don’t forget to Pin this image for later!
Hawk Attack, Coyote Visit, and Beaver Friend
At the beginning of the month, we had a hawk attack one of our chickens. Luckily it escaped with just some lost feathers and a minor tear in its skin after we chased the hawk away. The hawks continued visiting us for a few weeks, hovering above. But they seem to have finally given us a break for now.
One day, when Landon was working on the house, he saw a coyote approaching from the corner of his eye. He shot it and we left it in the woods for the eagles and hawks to pick apart, away from the chickens.
Then, at the end of the month, we noticed a beaver swimming in our pond, right near our tiny house! We’ve never had this happen before and it seems strange based on the size of our pond and where it is located, but it’s been almost a week and he hasn’t left yet! We’re fine with our little friend sticking around as long as isn’t destructive.
Baby Chicks Hatch and More Arrive
Our baby chicks hatched from our incubator this month, a few more than I was anticipating which was fun! It was 12 in total but one could not stand up properly and passed fairly quickly. We will have to wait and see how many are hens and how many roosters will hit the stewpot.
Then our 30 barred rock chicks arrived in the mail! They are all hens and a few days younger than our hatched chicks. All the chicks are upstairs in the barn staying warm under the heat lamp. They will be kicked out to pasture in June when it’s warmer outside and our meat chicks arrive!
Butchering Rabbits
Landon butchered our next round of 30-ish meat rabbits! It was fun to have the kids involved again and teach them where our meat comes from. Since our meat chickens and venison are slowly running out, it was good to stock up the freezer again with some homegrown rabbits.
Finishing Up Plumbing and Electrical
As for the new house build, Landon finished up the plumbing and electrical. The electrical inspection is happening in a few days, so we are praying for great results so he can continue to move forward! We are still waiting for our chimney parts to arrive, but once that happens then he can have the HVAC and plumbing inspection as well.
First Camping Trip
Landon took Harmony, our oldest child at 3 years old, on her first camping trip. They hiked into the woods on our land in the evening and set up camp. Then they cooked hotdogs over the fire and headed to bed before returning in the morning. It was quick and fun, and she loved every second of it!
Garlic Popping Up
As for the garden, all my garlic sprouts are popping out! I never started any other seeds indoors due to lack of space and lighting in the tiny house so we will see what I get to this next month as things start to gear up. Hopefully when I transplant some of my onion starts outside they thrive!
Thanks for reading and see you back next month for many more updates!
