After a heavy blizzard at the beginning of the month, we had a heat wave roll through and melt all the snow in only a couple of days! We went from winter to summer and now finally to our normal spring temperatures.
We were able to clean up the yard after all the snow melted and get some smaller projects done before we focus on getting our house built this summer! Here are quite a few updates for you now that spring is here!
Don’t forget to Pin this image for later!
Farm Stand Open
We set up our farm stand again and have been selling eggs on the corner! If you are local, you can find all the information about it here and here.
I can’t believe this is our third year selling farm fresh eggs to the community! We enjoy it and we know all our neighbors do too!
Chickens Arrive
Speaking of selling eggs, we had 30 new baby chicks arrive. They are Rhode Island Red females and they will be added to our egg-laying bunch in the fall! They will be replacing our 25ish New Hampshire Reds that will go to the freezer.
They are currently living in a bin under our kitchen table because it is still below freezing at night but they will move to the barn any day now! They are so cute, our girls have been enjoying watching them run around.
Fixing Up The Chicken Coops/Rabbit Hutches
Landon spent some time doing repairs to both our rabbit hutches and our chicken coops…they needed it! I’m very thankful he is willing to do this dirty work. It is nice to have fresh spaces for the animals are they are enjoying the sunshine a bit more.
Moving All Our Fencing
We previously had about an acre fenced off for the chickens but with the house build this summer, all that had to be taken down and moved. We are just letting the chickens free-range this year.
The fencing went around the garden, and we created a small play area for the girls where the chickens can’t enter off the side of the house. We also moved the bird netting to protect the second coop and the garden!
Landon is also working on putting wheels on our meat chicken tractors, so they are easier to move this year. We plan on only raising 30 this summer as we have the baby coming in August!
Building Swingset
Landon, also (as if he didn’t do so much already this month!) built a swing set for the girls off the side of the barn. They are loving it and it will be so fun to use this summer!
Getting In The Garden
It was amazing to see garlic sprouting up in the garden after all the snow melted! I could hardly believe it worked since this was my first ear growing it and naturally, I was skeptical.
The onions I started growing indoors are just about ready to be moved outside. The cabbage and calendula will be moving out soon too. I also planted tomatoes indoors and they are all sprouting, which is so fun!
Also, I recently discovered this garden planning tool and am enjoying it! You can check it out here.
It was a busy month but the next few months of spring and summer are only going to be getting busier! Thanks for reading and check back next month.
