Starting our meat rabbit rabbitry was one of the best decisions we made for our family. We were able to do it with ease because of these meat rabbit books!
Not only does it provide us with our own source of healthy meat making us more self-sufficient, but we also make a profit off of it! We sell our rabbits, rabbit meat, rabbit manure, and rabbit hides. Anyone can start their own rabbitry and own rabbits right in their backyard!
When we started with our first three rabbits, we were on a one-acre lot in a small suburban neighborhood. Since then, we have transitioned to our 80-acre Bethsaida homestead. But, our larger rabbitry still takes up just a few square feet in our barn, making it easy and convenient to raise our own meat!
If you’re ready to jump into the meat rabbit world, or if you’re just looking for more information, these seven meat rabbit books are the best place to start!

This book is classic, constantly being updated, and probably the most popular of them all, and rightly so!
If you haven’t heard of the “Storey’s Guide” books, there is basically one for each farm or homesteading animal. The books are filled with everything you could possibly need to know.
And the best part is that this meat rabbit book has the information you know you can trust. Sometimes the internet is filled with misleading information. I can assure you that you won’t be lead astray with the information in Storey’s Guide to Raising Rabbits.
It covers everything from setting up your rabbit hutches to breeding them to making a profit.

I adore this book because it is so easy to read. Everything is laid out so beautifully and there is no useless fluff!
The rabbit chapter has beautiful illustrations and diagrams. It helps you picture what the book is talking about if you have no previous experience with raising your own meat rabbits.
This book would be a worthwhile purchase, and a smart investment, if you plan on owning any of the other farm animals the book also covers in detail – chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, goats, and sheep.
So far, we only have meat rabbits and chickens on our homestead, but we are looking to purchase sheep soon as our next addition. I immediately opened up this book to learn everything I need to know about sheep.
This is definitely one of the meat rabbit books you should have on hand!

Like the previous book, Barnyard in your Backyard, this book too covers a wide variety of animals and animal topics. However, that does not mean that the information is lacking.
The detail on the meat rabbit section of the book is amazing. I love that it includes information on keeping your rabbits healthy and how to care for them properly.
It is a thorough book and easy to read which is why most people enjoy having this on their shelves!

This is an extremely detailed book, maybe the most detailed out of all the meat rabbit books.
The introduction starts with information on the history of rabbits, when they were domesticated, and the wide array of programs and productions they are used for now.

This book is very specific on raising rabbits for meat versus just as a pet.
Some of the other books on this list would be good options for you if you were only interested in resources for your pet rabbit. However, this book is very good at giving specific information to increase your meat production.
The whole reason my husband and I decided to dive into the idea of raising meat rabbits was so that we could become meat self-sufficient. Between hunting deer, fishing, and a chicken here or there, we knew we needed another meat source.
Meat rabbits breed fast and produce large litters. They take up little time and space. And, they are delicious! This is one of the best meat rabbit books to increase your meat production at home, save money, and become more self-sufficient!

The Backyard Homestead Guide To Raising Farm Animals by Gail Damerow
This book so cute, fun, and educational! If you are not up for reading a boring textbook on rabbits and want your information presented in an easy-to-understand way, then this book is for you!
I loved that this book gets straight to the point. It makes learning about meat rabbits fun and enjoyable! And, you can also use this book as a guide to other animals you may eventually want on your farm, homestead, or right in your backyard.
In fact, the Backyard Homestead is a series of books that will help you on your homesteading journey. When my husband and I were first getting started I ate up these books. They are easy to read yet provide you with a wealth of wisdom.

This is certainly an older book and maybe one that is harder for you to find. I was able to find it on the shelf of my local library, which is how I was introduced to it.
I loved that this book is another of the meat rabbit books that are focused on meat production. It talks about how to enhance production and things to avoid that might hurt your meat source.
If you raise chickens too, I suggested this book in my list of the best chicken books blog post as well. While some modern concepts are not included and some tips may seem outdated, it is still packed with wisdom.

Books are such a great resource for something like this. It’s good to see all the info you provide, especially for ones that are updated and have newer editions because staying up to date is also good! I think for something like this I would be drawn to that book that’s part of a series – if you find a good book on a topic AND there are others about additional things you want to learn that’s always such a good feeling.
Yes totally agree! (:
I grew up with rabbits as pets, but I applaud you for doing this! And the resources you provided are fabulous!!! I would not know where to start!
Aw thanks so much Kelly!
