Read Adulting Books
Let’s face it, it’s harder to keep educating yourself after college. Yet, you’ll find there are so many basic things in life that you still need to know! #adulting
You’ll probably start with Googling or Youtubing all the answers to all your problems. But, there’s a better way.
I started doing that at first too and before I knew it, I had too much information and I wasn’t sure what to trust! That’s why I have found that reading books provided me with detailed, informative, and accurate information.
I even wrote a blog post on The Top 10 Most Influential Books On Adulting to help you start using this life skill immediately.
And if you think you can’t afford it, drive over to your local library and sign up for a library card. When you use your local library to stay educated, you stay on budget and have access to everything you could need to answer your questions.

Set Up Routines
Consistency helps you stay disciplined. Routines help establish consistency. Your discipline forms the habits you create in your 20s.
But where should you start? You should start with a morning and evening routine.
Starting your day off with routine wires your brain to continue following positive routines throughout the rest of the day. An evening routine helps trigger your mind that it’s time for bed.
Both lead to a healthier lifestyle!
Need more ideas for routines? Here are some easy ones: meal prep routine, cleaning the house routine, calling loved ones routine, car maintenance routine, and so many more.
How I like to do it is first to identify something that regularly needs to be done, like preparing my lunch ahead of time, or regularly needs maintenance, like changing the oil on my car.
Then mark your calendar with when these routines will take place, like the first Sunday of every month or every Monday night. You can have daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly routines.
Lastly, hold yourself accountable for these routines. Ask a friend or family member to help, offering them something if you don’t follow through. Or reward yourself when you do follow through.
What routines will you start to set up today to start these life skills after college?

Network Often
This is a life skill I’m still not very good at. You see, I am extremely introverted and love to be alone, doing my own thing. And networking is the opposite of that.
And while sometimes networking means connecting with others online through a screen, the best networking is done in person.
Ask any salesman or saleswoman and they will tell you that they have better success when they are with their client in person. That is how trust is built and communication can thrive.
But, how do you network now that you are out of school?
What I did in the beginning with my essential oil business, was sign up for Alignable.com. I started posting classes that I was hosting at a local Dunkin Donuts and messaging people that were in a similar field.
After a quick message conversation, I would suggest meeting over coffee. We would find a time and location that worked and discuss our different products or services when we met in person.
It was so cool to see how other people could recommend me now that they knew me. I was also able to recommend these others that I knew.
Before I knew it my network had doubled. It was really that simple.
If you need other ideas to network try to find local networking events. Sometimes your employer may even host these in the area.
You can also network by asking your existing circle if they know of others and receiving names passed on to you. Then, set up your own coffee meet-up or networking event.
Lastly, set up a LinkedIn profile and use the internet to network. Set up a Skype, Zoom, or FaceTime event where you can connect on a deeper level.
The key to networking is to not going into it just thinking about what you can receive or gain. You need to genuinely find ways that you can help the other person or show that you will try to at the very least.
By helping others, you gain trust and loyalty and build a lifelong network connection.

Stay Out Of Debt
For some more than others, the temptation to max out their credit card is a constant battle. Credit card debt can consume you before you know it.
Staying out of debt will set up your future for success.
Don’t purchase more than you can afford. Have money set aside in the case of an emergency. Don’t rely on your credit card to bail you out.
It’s simple. But, I didn’t say it was easy.
The best way to stay out of debt is to have the right mindset. Understand that you don’t need the next new gadget and that keeping up with the Jones will only lead you into a failing comparison trap.
To help establish a healthy money mindset, start reading finance books, listening to money podcasts, and watching educational videos.

What you don’t know really can hurt you. For example, investing now in your 20s with compound interest could make you hundreds of thousands of dollars more than if you started investing in your 30s.
Begin seeing this as one of the important life skills after college that you need to start implementing today and you won’t regret it.

Get Organized
One mistake I made after college was ditching my planner. I stop organizing my life because it seemed like there was just less to keep track of.
Life seemed simple. Wake up, do my routines, go to work, come home from work, run some errands, and finish up the night to do it all over again.
However, I quickly started forgetting important things, like when my library books were due or what time my appointment was. In fact, I could not remember it all in my head and I needed help.
I never thought being organized was a life skill I needed after college since I did it so well during college. However, I think that is why these life skills after college are so important to share with others.
We need to help one another stay on the correct track even though the seasons of life may change.
I now stay organized with my Google calendar that my husband and I share. It helps us see each other’s schedules each day. We also discuss the upcoming week every Sunday night.
Our Sunday night game plan, which you should do even if you are not married yet, keeps you prepared and prevents fewer things from going wrong.
You can also stay organized by keeping your house or apartment clean. Use files, labels, and established areas for each item. When everything has a place and purpose you begin to feel organized.
Life runs smoother when your life is organized.

Go On Adventures
Don’t let this turn into a boring season of life!
I initially focused on paying off my school debt and saved as much money as I could. I definitely had to say no to quite a few things. However, I am so thankful I let myself get a little loose and bought a cheap cruise with my sister.
Sometimes, we need to keep the fun in life.
My cubicle after college became pretty boring pretty quickly. It was depressing not having all my friends around all the time, lacking fun events to attend, and having a monotonous job I drove to every day.
I wondered where all the fun had gone.
Well, believe it or not, having fun is also a life skill that you need after college! Don’t stop exploring after college graduation. Keep creating fun in your life.
It is so important to stay focused on these other life skills after college, but don’t push fun out of the picture completely. You’ll burn out and begin to not appreciate the things in life as much.
What is something you can do each week and each month to bring fun and joy into your life?

Stay Grounded in Truth
You are not a failure. You will make mistakes.
There’s no perfect guide or roadmap to help you after graduation, and that’s why most people find it a very difficult and challenging time in life.
When you begin to believe lies about your worth, your value, and your image, it leads to depression and anxiety.
Don’t forget the truth that defines you, your solid foundation, after college.
If your friends, your peers, and your influences change, don’t let peer pressure win. You don’t need to change who you are to reach your goals.
For me, it was remaining strong in my Christian faith when I didn’t have the support that I was used to. My environment changed completely from like-minded people to people that had a very different worldview than mine.
The best decision I ever made was not letting peer pressure win. If I had, I would have lost so much of myself. I would have walked a much harder road.
Stay true to your faith. Stay true to the worth and value you have in Christ and don’t let the lies win.
I hope you enjoyed learning about these 13 remarkable life skills after college! Let me know in the comments below what stage of life you are in and which life skill applies the most! I can’t wait to connect with you. (:
