If you’re reading this in 2020 then it’s safe to say that this summer has started off a little differently from what you’re used to. From canceled vacations to less time spent with friends and family, who’d have ever thought it would end up like this?
But being able to spend more time at home is a blessing too. From spending time with your loved ones to focusing on those home improvements you’ve been putting off, there are a lot of benefits to being at home.
Why not use the summer to focus on your home and finally work through your to-do list? If you shift your mindset from being sick of being at home to improve your home for the best summer you can have imagined, then you’ll find these tasks much more fun than cumbersome.
Here are some ideas to get you started. Let’s go!

Fix The Broken Bits
Do you have an endless list of jobs that need doing around the house? A squeaky door, a tap that keeps dripping, and how about that shelf that is starting to warp? Now is the perfect time to get them fixed.
Taking care of small jobs can help you feel more relaxed at home, knowing those annoying jobs can’t bother you anymore!
One easy way to do that is to DIY it yourself with a simple YouTube tutorial! And if not, check out your local library for some handyman books to help you along the way.
Meanwhile, make sure you get the professionals in for the other jobs you’ve been putting off. Book yourself a heating and air conditioning service to make sure all of your appliances are working as expected – nobody wants to be without a working A/C in the summer!
You’ve got time on your side now, so get those jobs done and dusted once and for all.
Turn Your Backyard Into A Paradise
Your backyard has a lot of potentials to be your own personal paradise. There are some simple things you can do to enjoy a backyard makeover on a budget, including creating your own palette furniture and refreshing your paintwork.
With the perfect place to relax during the summer months, you won’t need to go anywhere else!
First, think about the design you want to go for. Now, I’m certainly no interior designer but I still have a general idea of the fun atmosphere I imagine. For me, that’s a deck with a porch swing, beautiful exposed-bulb lights, and a bug screen to keep those annoying mosquitoes away!
Also, consider a fire pit, cornhole boards, a bar area with an ice chest, a small pond with a waterfall, and even a cloth tarp for your own backyard movie theater.
And to top it off make sure you have some beautiful plants throughout your backyard space. You can build your own planter boxes like this DIY tutorial to make it easier if you don’t have the planting space.
You’ll love having people over when you improve your home for the best summer backyard in the neighborhood!

Get Creative With Your Painting
Could your home do with some sprucing? Paint can work wonders for brightening up your home.
The good news is that there are some fantastic paint trends this year to give you some inspiration. Block colors? Paneled walls? Geometric prints? The world is your oyster. Pick some colors and pick up a brush and give your walls a makeover.
One of my favorite memories of when my husband and I were engaged was when we decided to repaint the master bathroom.

It was a horribly dark maroon and made everything feel so enclosed and drab. Landon, my husband, suggested we paint it my favorite color – green! After looking at paint swatches forever we picked one that ended up being brighter than we anticipated but we still loved it.
I remember that day so well because we had such a blast repainting the walls together. After turning the music up as loud as we could we got to work, and we started pulling small pranks on each other! Before we knew it we were hardly working at all.
The new bathroom paint color turned out great and we have memories to last a lifetime!
Painting is something anyone can do, so find a spouse, child, neighbor, or friend to do it with and make it fun!
Start Your Bigger Projects To Improve Your Home For The Best Summer
The summer is an excellent time to begin work on your larger home improvement projects. From converting your attic to creating an open-plan living space, there are some amazing things you can do to your home to help you create your dream house.
Big projects take a lot of work and a lot of planning, but they also cost a lot of money. A side hustle could be a good way to get the savings you need to put your plans into action and build your home exactly as you want it.
In fact, I share all about our Airbnb side hustle in this post and you can find other great side hustle options here as well!
Before you start your big projects, make sure you have set up a budget. Jumping into a big project without a budget is only dangerous. Things begin to add up quickly and before you know it, you’ve spent more than you can afford.
If a budget seems daunting to you, then I would encourage you to read one of these books. They helped me not just see the need for a budget but also shift my mindset to think positively about them and learn to enjoy the process. Learn how to set up a budget here!
For each big project, you have on your list to complete answer these questions: How much time with this project take me? Where is it on the priority list? When will I accomplish it by? Will I start other projects before this one is done?
Being spontaneous has its time and place, and it’s not when you have a big project or several big projects to undertake! The best way to improve your home for the best summer is to not get too far in over your head where their projects drag out into fall and winter.

Find The Motivation
Where do you get your home improvement motivation? What keeps your mind fresh and excited about the end goal? Is it HGTV episodes? Pinterest? Or YouTube Videos?
Whatever sparks your imagination and inspires you, do more of it. Especially, if you just aren’t feeling it!
Everyone is different. I am very on top of tasks and hate leaving things to the last minute. However, my husband loves to procrastinate. For him, the key to getting projects done is a simple deadline.
Setting a deadline, and it must be a hard and fast deadline with a potential consequence or reward at the end, can be the ultimate motivator! Sometimes that is in the form of a fun bet with friends and family, or sometimes, you just need someone else to set the deadline and hold you accountable.
Actually, to help me stay motivated in writing my blog posts, I’ll offer myself a reward at the end if I finish on time. What deadline can you set today to start getting motivated on your home improvement projects?
Overall, summer is a great time to start improving your home! But if you are also able to work from your home this summer then don’t let the time slip between your fingers.
Being able to work on your home this summer can help you transform it into the home you’ve always wanted. From small tasks to big projects, use this time to finally do the things you want. By the end of the summer, you’ll be proud of what you’ve achieved and can look back at fond memories of making your house a home.
