As a Christian mom, I am so thankful the Lord has not left me defenseless against the devil, who attacks me daily! I’ve been studying the Scriptures to put on the armor of God as a mom so that I will not continually fall prey to his schemes.

What is the armor of God? Ephesians 6:10-20 (ESV) says:

The Whole Armor of God

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.” (emphasis added)

The devil especially targets my mind as a mom. It is my desire to be prepared for his attacks! I do that by putting on the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes with the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and sword of the Spirit!

As I study each one of these I want to learn what that looks like for moms in particular. How can I wear each of these items for battle every day as a wife, mother, and homemaker?

Let’s check it out…

  1. The Belt of Truth

Truth is what we are given in the Bible. Therefore, everything else must align with that truth or it is a lie from the devil. And he certainly is the father of lies (John 8:44). The devil is constantly lying to me each day.

These lies include: You’re not loved or desired. Your home is ugly. You’re not doing a good job. You don’t have the latest products. You’re fat. You’re failing your children. You’re not doing enough. The list could go on and on.

If I don’t stop those lies in my head immediately, and take the thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) immediately, then those lies win and I start to believe them as truth.

We put on the whole armor of God as a mom when we first chose to repeat truth to ourselves instead of believing the lies. Instead of the lies going to my head, I listen to: God chose me. He loves me. I am working with excellence for the kingdom of God. I’m not perfect but the Lord helps me. I am worthy and beautiful before Christ. All His promises are true.

  1. The Breastplate of Righteousness

What is righteousness? It is being made right before God! When we recognize our sin, repent of it, turn away from it, and accept God’s gift of salvation we experience His righteousness in exchange for our sin and brokenness!

It is not our good works that save us, but purely the grace of God! God’s righteousness protects us like a breastplate because we are made new in Him. As a mom, we need to make the decision every day to stand confident in the truth that He has made us righteous before Him!

I think the best way for us to do that is to spend time alone with Him. Time alone with God should include reading the Bible, praying, and meditating on His truth. In some seasons of life that looks like getting up before the kids (the ideal) and spending about half an hour to digest it all.

But, in some seasons of motherhood that is nearly impossible. Instead, I use nap time or the evening to connect with my Savior. Whatever season I am in, I need to remind myself of His righteousness by being alone with Him.

  1. Shoes Of The Gospel of Peace

Because Jesus died for us and rose again, we have good news (the gospel)! We put on the whole armor of God as a mom when we are confident in that good news. It brings peace, not only to our lives but also to the lives of others!

When we share the good news with our words and actions to our children, husbands, and friends, we are wearing the shoes of the gospel of peace. That is displayed through the fruit of the Spirit (Galations 5:22-23).

When you are in a heated incident with your child and you choose to show them kindness, you display the gospel and bring peace. When your husband wrongs you and you forgive him, you show him the sacrificial love you also experience from Jesus. And when you turn to Christ when you are overwhelmed and worn thin instead of wine, chocolate, or something else addictive, you choose to display the gospel with self-control!

  1. Shield of Faith

Faith is sustaining to the mom facing Satan’s attacks. Because we have been saved through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9) we don’t have to rely on outside things to keep us going.

No amount of diets, binge eating, shopping sprees, sex, social media, awards, etc. can ever sustain us in this spiritual battle! Sure, they make us feel good temporarily. I have been there! But, they never fulfill.

We can have faith and trust God that what He is doing in our lives is for our good (Romans 8)! He is there for us when we need Him the most, we must simply take it to the Lord in prayer! How simple this is yet how so easily I forget.

Another way, besides prayer and Bible reading, that we can keep our shield of faith on is by fellowshipping with other believers and attending church regularly. When we commune with others in the body of Christ our faith is strengthened and we become renewed! Don’t we as busy moms especially need that?

  1. Helmet of Salvation

How can our salvation be our helmet? Well, remember how the enemy attacks our thoughts and minds throughout the day as moms? Our mind is protected by our salvation!

When we choose salvation in Christ we are given a new heart and a new mind. We now live in truth and have the power of the Holy Spirit to keep us from falling prey to lies. We need to continually renew our minds in truth, wearing all of the armor together!

Our salvation also keeps us set apart from the world. When we don’t follow the lies of the culture that the devil promotes, we are transformed (Romans 12:2). We can live in freedom from those lies each day as busy moms! (I’m preaching to myself here!)

  1. The Sword of the Spirit that is The Word Of God

God’s word is our most powerful tool! It gives us our truth, faith, gospel, righteousness, and salvation. Jesus used the Sword of the Spirit when he was in the wilderness being tempted by the devil (Luke 4).

Memorizing scripture is a weapon that cannot be thwarted. Repeat your memory verse throughout the day for the ultimate way to fight the devil. Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

Our confidence comes when we understand that knowing and praying God’s word is powerful! Pray for God to help you get this confidence by establishing a consistent quiet time with Him. Pray for strength to put on the whole armor of God as a mom daily.

We have the tools to fight our battles! It will build our faith and our family’s as well! Let me know in the comments below, how will you put on the whole armor of God as a mom today?
