When it comes time to name your homestead it can feel pretty daunting. I know it did for us!
We had just purchased 80 acres in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and were so excited to transition north over the next year from southern Wisconsin. But, having a new homestead, we knew that we wanted to give it a name.
Both my husband and I loved the idea of calling it something beautiful yet unique. We wanted it to be known by the locals but also tell a bit of a story about who we are. We didn’t want to simply call it “The Albert Homestead” (although if that is your taste there is certainly nothing wrong with that!)
It was a Sunday morning during the Covid lockdowns that we heard the name of our homestead. We were listening to our church message online and our pastor mentioned an old biblical town called Bethsaida.
He said one meaning of Bethsaida is “House of Fish.” It right away caught my attention, as my husband is an avid fisherman. I said, “I think that’s it, what we should call our land – Bethsaida Homestead!”
Landon immediately agreed and we knew that Bethsaida Homestead was the perfect name for our future homestead! It not only reflects our love for fishing, but also adventure, nature, and our love for the Lord!
But, let me share with you some other ways that you can name your homestead perfectly…

Consider The Journey
Only you can name your homestead or farm because only you know what it represents and what it means to you!

I think some of the best homestead and farm names are those that reflect the journey you or your family went on to get to this point. Consider these questions:
Why do you love homesteading and farming?
What brought you to this point?
Why did you pick this property?
What is a message that you want to share with others?
Some examples of this could be “Circle Back Farm” or “Harvest Homestead.” A phrase or one word that represents the journey of your life could be all you need to name your homestead perfectly.
Consider Where You Are
You’ve probably heard of “Prairie Homestead” or “Backwoods Farm.” These describe the location of where you are more than anything else. And, sometimes, location means everything.
What do you love about where you live? What makes it unique to you? Start writing down a list of your favorite adjectives that describe where you live. Maybe one of those would make the perfect name for your homestead!
Our first house was not a homestead, but it was where we started raising chickens and rabbits, and gardening. It had beautiful oak trees that almost covered our house. I named it “The Cozy Canopy” because of those oak trees!
It may take a bit of creativity but with time it will come to you.

Consider Your Specialty
Do you only raise beef on your homestead? Or is your focus on garden produce? Maybe you mostly do blueberries, maple syrup, microgreens, or jams. If you have a specialty on your farm or homestead then if the name reflects that, you will have an easier marketing strategy!
“Sugar Creek Rabbitry” or “Waterfall Point Honey” is a great name for your homestead because it reflects what you specialize in.
When you consider something else instead of the words “homestead” or “farm” as part of your name you help people understand immediately what you are all about! Perhaps, “Phelps Market Growers” or “Johnson Fresh Produce” is enough!
Again, this could be a great marketing strategy. Especially, if you set up a booth at a farmer’s market and then display your farm name, people will immediately know what you sell!
Consider What You Are All About
For us, our Christian faith means everything to us. Our purpose is to share the gospel message with others! That’s why we were so happy to use Bethsaida Homestead.
It sparks a conversation. Our neighbor was talking to us the other day and said we must be religious because of the name of our homestead. It gave us the chance to share our faith with him and explain parts of the Bible.
What is your purpose in life? What drives you and motivates you? I would encourage you to think of a way to incorporate it when you name your homestead. Especially, if it is related to your faith.
It’s kind of like having a tattoo. People see it and ask you about it. When they ask, what do you want to share with them?
Keep Your Ears Open
We simply kept our ears open and eventually, heard the name of our homestead. When friends or family are visiting, listen to how they describe your homestead.
Also, ask people around town about the history of your land. Something may just come up! We learned that a corner of our land used to be called Fresh Egg Corner because of how many eggs were sold there.

If All Else Fails
“The Smith Homestead” or “Albert Farm” may be a great name for your homestead in the meantime while you wait for the creativity to spark.
When you name your homestead, be sure to take the pressure off yourself. Don’t worry about what others are going to think of the name. Focus on what you love! After all, you are the one living there.
Plus, if you don’t like the name you chose, you can always change it!
Let me know in the comments below if this helped you name your homestead! I can’t wait to hear.

Great ideas… we just purchased an old tobacco farm.. going to turn it into a pumpkin farm. There was a town that was established up the road That is now gone called (West Fork….) we have the old sign that was posted on the grocery store when it was in business. we think that the locals would definitely recognize the name, but it really doesn’t have anything to do with pumpkins… 🎃 we thought about Autumn Farm, ??? There are no other pumpkin patches in the area. They all have the pumpkins brought in , our patch would be an… Read more »
I would do West Fork Pumpkin Patch if that was the only thing you were doing/selling but if you have more going on then use “farm” in the name! (:
