Recovering from a c section after the birth of your child can be quite difficult, especially if you weren’t planning on it. These are the books you need to read after a c section that will help you on the path to recovery!
When I was pregnant with my daughter Harmony, my husband and I planned for a natural home birth. We read lots of books on how to deliver her naturally but before we knew it we were 42 weeks along and she still wouldn’t come out!
We made the choice to be induced at the hospital, which ultimately led to a c section. It wasn’t the path we had chosen or planned for but we were so thankful to have a healthy beautiful girl.

After my c section, I wanted resources to help me with my recovery and present me with my options for my next birth. These are the books I found to be the most helpful, and I hope they will help you too!
Let’s check out the books you need to read after a c section…

This book is a classic. When I went back to my midwife for one last check-up after the c section, I asked her quite a few questions about recovery and future family planning. She immediately recommended this book.
I loved that this book was filled with facts and scientific information. While it is a few years outdated and facts like the average cesarean rate or mortality rate have changed since the book was published, it is still filled with a great deal of wisdom.
I loved that this book gave me reasons to attempt a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). It encouraged me to still try the natural approach for my next child and went through the different reasons it may or not be possible.
This is my top recommendation for books you need to read after a c section.

This book is extremely helpful in recovery with a c section from exercise to nutrition to just overall feeling like yourself again! This book would have been amazing for me to have right after my c section, but because it was so unplanned, I didn’t even know a resource like this existed.
The chapters are all about preparing for surgery, getting home, starting with stretching, moving into more in-depth strength training in each part of your body, and then healthy eating.

I had no strength after my c section and I still feel like my abs are extremely weak even several months postpartum. I wish I had this guide right when I came home from the hospital.

I had an amazing pregnancy. I didn’t suffer from nausea and my baby and I were healthy the entire time. There was no indication that my labor and delivery would end in a cesarean birth.
However, every birth could end in a c section, which is crazy to think about. I wish this was one of the books I read before I gave birth so I was more educated.
One mistake I made was completely disregarding the option that a c section may still happen, even though I planned for an unmedicated, natural home birth.
This book is very detailed in information on c sections and is one of the books you need to read after a c section and even before a c section.

If your first birth ended in a c section all hope is not lost! You are not required to have a cesarean birth every time going forward.
In fact, you should attempt a VBAC if at all possible for an easier recovery. For our next birth, Lord-willing, we will be attempting a VBAC. It’s scary and even discouraging to think about at times, but this book is so encouraging and uplifting!

There is an emotional recovery that takes place after a c section. Were you upset after you c section birth? Did you feel robbed of your dream or fearful of what others may think of you? Or did you feel like a failure?
I felt like I had failed myself and my husband after my c section. I knew I had done everything possible to have my daughter vaginally but I still felt like I had let him down. My husband was so encouraging and reassuring during my recovery and I know I couldn’t have done the whole process without his support.
But sometimes, you need to hear from others that went through the same experience as you to help you process your emotions. This book will do just that for you!
You can hear from others with shared experiences to help you process your own feelings and emotions when you read this book.

If you have a scheduled c section, for whatever reason, this is a wonderful book to help you on the journey. You can learn how to prepare and also keep the book to know how to recover.
But, even if you don’t have a scheduled c section, this book is wonderful in being prepared and educated. It can help you know what will happen if a c section is presented to you, repeat cesarean sections, or how to deal with the recovery of an unexpected c section.
If you want a detailed guide that will educate you and put your mind at ease then this is the book for you!

This book isn’t specifically related to a c section mom but is really for any mom! I read this book after my first birth, a c section, and had to include it in this list because it is an amazing resource.
When you’re a first-time mom there are so many new complications you could run into with your babies like diaper rash, cradle cap, and infections. While the internet is filled with information and resources, it can require some digging sometimes and it can be hard to know which sources to trust.
I found this book to be an amazing resource to turn to and flip through. It has each concern listed alphabetically and there is also a glossary for easy access.
This is a great book to have on hand for any mom out there! I just couldn’t leave it off the list of books you need to read after a c section!

I’m glad you were able to deliver a healthy baby girl despite it not following your birth plan. I can’t imagine how nerve-racking that can be!
It’s true that I didn’t sleep the whole night before my induction haha thanks Kelly!
I had no idea how many books there were for post c-section, but there are books about everything, so it makes sense.
Yep!!
