Ever since I began using essential oils back in 2017, I have wanted to grow my own medicinal herbs as well! I recently found these books on home herbal remedies to be a great place to start.
Essential oils have so many benefits – immune support, sleep support, respiratory support, and so much more! Other than diffusing them, my favorite way to use them is when they are integrated with Young Living or DIY products, like laundry soap, shampoo, and lotions.
That way I know I only keep safe and healthy products free of harmful chemicals and toxins in our home! If you are interested in using essential oils first, be sure to check out this page on my blog.
After moving to our 80-acre homestead I knew I needed to start my own cottage garden. With all our farm animals and vegetable garden produce, the missing piece was growing medicinal herbs for natural home remedies.
But, I didn’t know where to start! The knowledge I felt like I needed to obtain before starting was overwhelming. Plus, there are just so many books on home herbal remedies.
These books on home herbal remedies were at our local library and after reading them I feel much more confident about the herbs that I can grow in our cottage garden and that will benefit our family!
If you are always searching the internet for this information, it can be hard to know what information to trust and how to save the resources for later. Instead, having books written by experts on hand that you can tab, highlight, and turn to over the years is much more reliable.
Let’s check them out…

Wow, this book is huge! I have to be honest, there was no way I could read every single word in this book. The amount of information and resources is nothing short of impressive.
The introduction section titled “Why Herbal Medicine?” was a wonderful read. I also appreciate the book’s focus on using the nature created by God to find our remedies versus the medical system, which often falls short.
This is one of the books on home herbal remedies that will shape your holistic mindset, a key to the use of medicinal herbs. It also places a great deal of science in each theory, backing up claims and providing clear evidence of the uses of medicinal herbs.
This book did not focus on growing the herbs yourself but is a great book to have on hand to become more knowledgeable and shape your mindset towards natural healing.
Oh! And if you are wondering what an “adaptogen” is, it is essentially how the body adapts when we increase the body’s resistance and endurance to the different stressors.

The beginning of this book talks about the dandelion. Most people consider it an annoying week but did you know that it actually has amazing medicinal properties?
Our family used to think the same way until we became educated. We started making dandelion jelly two years ago and making a salad out of green dandelion leaves. Now, we can’t enough of them!
James also teaches us that we don’t need to grow 100 herbs to make home herbal remedies. We really only need about 30. That amazed me!
I also appreciate the basic yet extensive information on herbal terms, herbs themselves, how to best use the herbs, gardening the herbs, and storing the herbs.
This is one of the books on home herbal remedies that you will continually open for more specific information when the time calls for it.

Out of all the books on this list, I have to say that this is the most beautiful! The pictures of each of these herbs make learning about them fun and exciting!
The book walks you through many common herbs that you already cook with, but helps you understand them much clearer. They are broken into four categories – pungent, salty, sour, bitter, sweet – and Rosalee helps you identify which one you need more balance in your life.
Rosalee also does a wonderful job at making this journey to using more medicinal herbs relatable. The layout of the book is inviting and enjoyable to read. It would make a great coffee table book too.
She discusses the science behind herbs and their effectiveness as well as including many everyday recipes, which I greatly appreciated!

This book is similar to the other book on adaptogens; however, it is a bit more condensed making it a smaller book and easier to read.
It is definitely another of the books on home herbal remedies that are great to have on hand when a question pops up in my mind. For example, I think we may have while hawthorn on our land. I can pull this book out, turn to page 250, and learn everything I need to know about the plant before I use it.
Safety is definitely a big concern when it comes to using wild plants and herbs for medicinal purposes. But, also growing them myself, I want to know accurate information before using the plant or herb on my family.
I appreciate the safety rating and dosage information this book gives to each herb!

This is the exact book I was looking for when it comes to actually harvesting herbs from my cottage garden and filling our bathroom cabinets with herbal remedies!
The recipes in this book are so simple, easy to follow, and packed with important additional information that is important to know.
I also appreciate the different sections on herbs for men, herbs for women, herbs for children, and herbs for elders. Our bodies are different and understanding my body will be different than understanding my husband’s body and my daughter’s body.

This book is straightforward and laid out wonderfully, making it easy to follow when you are in the kitchen making tinctures or salves. Several photos make the steps easy to follow for basic extraction methods if you are looking to attempt them at home!
I also like the glossary section of herbs, so I can look up specific herbs and read up on each one quickly!
This is a simple book to have on hand for the beginner, like me, that is just getting started with using herbs in the home and making home herbal remedies.

I know this book is in reference specifically to essential oils and not homegrown herbs, but the information in this is priceless.
I have been using the essential oil pocket reference for years. When I am curious about an essential oil or a specific ailment I am facing, both are extremely early to look up. Because essential oils are often extracted from herbs, some of the information can overlap.
If you are interested more in essential oils or have a few on hand but you just aren’t sure how to use them effectively, this pocket reference is a great resource to have on hand.
But I can also assist you! I’ve been running my essential oil business for a few years now and I would love to help you on your journey of safe and effective essential oil usage! Start here!

Im a big believer in holistic and functional medicine, so these books are right up my alley! I love your selection!
Thank you!!
This is awesome – first of all yay for the library having so many great options! I’ve found with so many topics it’s great to start with a book first because it’s all in one place, laid out well, and is reliable information. I’d be most interested in the herbal recipes book, especially since I’m trying to drink more tea and see what sort of benefits I can get from that.
I agree – much more reliable than the internet! That’s why I love putting together lists like this (:
