It’s crazy to compare house sizes nowadays to houses back then. A tiny house with a family is certainly not normal or common these days, but it was many years ago, and still is in other countries!
Most children now have their own room, some can even fit a couch or play structure in it too! But is all this space actually benefiting families and children?
I’m thinking of how small the Little House on the Prairie cabin must have been. They had only one or two rooms typically, and maybe a space divided by a curtain. Two or more children per room would have been normal!
Our family of four currently lives in a tiny home at about six hundred square feet. And while we do plan to expand it as our children get older, it is still going to be considered tiny. I’ve written before about how much we actually do enjoy living in a small space, even in the dead of winter!
Let me explain why we love our tiny house with a family…

Financial
The financial benefits of a tiny home for a family are undeniably amazing. It is always cheaper to live in a smaller house than a larger one and can save you so much money!
Being out of debt and remaining out of debt is extremely important for our family. Tiny house living helps us accomplish this goal and experience true financial freedom.
Consider all the ways you could save money if you lived in a tiny house or even just a smaller one. You would save on your electric, heating, water, etc. bills to name a few.

Community
The community and family togetherness aspect of living in a tiny house with a family are undeniably one of my favorites! There are no secrets when you live in such close quarters.
You have no choice but to handle your emotions during conflict and express your emotions to each other throughout the day. While privacy can be hard at times, there is always the opportunity to go outside or to the barn, in our case.
Communication is forced more in a tiny house and you learn how to relate to each other better.
God created us to be in a community with one another. We were not meant to be alone. What better place to start practicing that than in a tiny house with a family?

Minimal belongings
When we first moved into our tiny house we downsized to our minimal belongings and needs. We store everything we use daily or almost daily in the house. Everything seasonal gets stored in a room in our barn. Otherwise, we don’t keep a lot of things on hard and it is so refreshing!
Having minimal belongings keeps us grateful for the things we do have. We can take care of our things better, only store what we actually use and need, and appreciate them more.

Less To Clean
Another benefit of living in a tiny house with a family is that there is less to clean. Although I will say, you do end up cleaning the same spots throughout the day more often because they are high-traffic areas.
But, I do not need to set aside big cleaning days to clean a huge house with multiple rooms and spaces. It makes cleaning quick, fun, and manageable!

In Nature
Living in a tiny house has forced us outside all the time! Sometimes the house feels small, but then you have the whole world at your fingertips.
We live on an 80-acre homestead, so we also have so much done outside regularly. Whenever we feel cooped up in the winter, we go ice fishing, skating, or snowshoeing on our land. In the summer we jump in the pond, play disc golf, or spend time in the garden.
If you love camping or being outside, then a tiny house is a great option for you. Think about different things you can regularly do outside. Perhaps a dog park in the summer or ski pass in the winter, the options are endless!
