We moved onto our homestead right after our first child, Harmony, was born! When I was setting up our baby registry, I wanted to know the best homesteader baby registry items.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a blog post with all that information at the time.
Now that we have been living on our homestead for about four months and our daughter is four months old, I want to share with you the items that have been the most practical and essential.
Advertisements and most baby items are geared towards the average stay-at-home mom I found. But, as a homesteading mama, I didn’t want just any item. I wanted items that I would use routinely on the farm.
The first few weeks of my daughter’s life I used these items a great deal. We were still living at our old suburban home before moving to our 80-acre homestead. While they were practical at the time, I noticed a decreased use in most of them.
We also moved from a 2400 square foot home into a tiny house, only about 300 square feet! So, that also changed the way we use baby items and how many we wanted to store.
If you live on a homestead or will be soon, here are the homesteader baby registry items you need to have!

This Jeep wagon is so practical! In fact, we don’t have a stroller. Between this Jeep wagon and babywearing, we haven’t had a need for a stroller.
We live on a dirt road and most of the terrain on our homestead that we using on a day-to-day basis is somewhat bumpy grass.
The Jeep wagon has thick wheels, perfect for rough terrain and dirt roads. It also holds so many things! It has a sunshade too that is removable so I can use it as a playpen or even for quick naps if I need to set Harmony down.

We actually have this item hanging from the rafters of our tiny house! And boy, has it been amazing!
When I was looking at baby items for our registry I noticed that the mechanical baby swings are so big and bulky. There just wasn’t room for that in our tiny house. But also, it seemed impractical for farm life since we are going outside so often.
Our daughter just wasn’t going to be sitting in a swing that often. However, it was nice to have a swing at times to settle her down, or just to have somewhere to set her.
Hanging this swing up in your house might not work, but I would still get it for outside, maybe in your barn or hanging from a sturdy tree. We have a second one that we are going to install outside because we love it so much!

This is the next best thing on the list of homesteader baby registry items. I couldn’t go without it!
I love that I can take my baby around with me as I feed the animals and do farm chores. If you find yourself as a busy homesteading mama then babywearing will make your life so easy!
Need to tend to the garden? Just slip your baby in the wrap and off you go.

This is something I regretted not putting on our baby registry. As soon as winter passed on the homestead (our daughter was born at the end of January) and we started heading outside more, I realized I didn’t have a sun hat to protect her head.
It’s so extremely important to keep your baby out of the sun as their skin I still very sensitive and can burn easily. They are also too young for sunscreen, so your best option for sun protection is sun hats.
I would encourage you to add sun hats to your baby registry in several different sizes so you are covered as your baby grows.

We use our pack and play all the time! First of all, we use it for our daughter’s bed instead of a crib since we live in a tiny house.
But also, it’s so easy to transport all around. If it’s her playtime and I have to clean up the chicken coop, then I will take the pack and play and leave it outside next to where I am working.
She can happily play in a contained and protected area while I get some work done. We can also move it all around the house and take it with us if we are traveling.

I didn’t know these two items existed until I saw someone selling them on the Facebook marketplace.
This bug netting covers a pack and play and this bug netting covers her car seat. Both are so practical! They are essential if you live in a wooded area out in the country too! Since your baby is too young for the use of bug spray or other harmful chemicals and products, this is your next best option to keep your baby safe.
I think these items were invented almost specifically for homesteaders and farmers because of our desperate need for them.

Our daughter has seemed to have outgrown the baby wrap mentioned above and now at four months much prefers the baby carrier.
With a baby carrier, she can face outwards and see the world in front of her. Her senses are much more heightened now. I choose the baby wrap, where she faces my chest if I want her to sleep, but I choose the baby carrier when it is time for her to look around and be engaged.
We didn’t have both at first, only a baby wrap. But, we found the baby carrier an easier use now. I would suggest purchasing both as each has a purpose and a time they function best.

I am so glad that we invested in cloth diapers. Not only have they saved us so much money, but they have also just made sense considering our homesteading lifestyle.
Of course, disposable diapers are easy and convenient to use on the homestead or in farm life. We used them for about the first month of our daughter’s life because we were gifted so many.
However, cloth diapers resemble the mindset homesteaders have. We desire to be more self-sufficient, practical and take care of the earth and things we have been entrusted with. Cloth diapers are just another piece of that puzzle.
Don’t forget a dry/wet bag linked here too!

Speaking of cloth diapers, if you decide to go that route then a clothesline is another homesteading essential. But, it’s also so practical even if you aren’t using cloth diapers.
It may seem like a funny item to register for, but if it is something you need then add it to the list! If you feel uncomfortable adding such a big item, then a small hanging rack like this might be a better option.
The sun helps bleach out the bacteria that can build up in cloth diapers and strips them clean. All summer long I am putting my clothes and cloth diapers out on the clothesline! It is one of the homesteader baby registry items that are both practical and essential.

We had a couple of these cozy winter onesies that we used so often with our daughter when she was born. Life on the farm means you are regularly going outside. There are animals and plants that need tending to, even in the winter.
It is so easy to slip a baby into these and take them outside. It keeps them toasty warm, so you don’t have to worry about purchasing tiny gloves and hats, and socks.

There are so many cute diaper bags on the market, but you want to be sure you get one that functions as a backpack. Or just use a backpack in general!
This is the most practical way to haul baby items around the homestead while still staying organized. I love this one that I have linked. Although, sometimes I do wish it was slightly bigger to fit a few more cloth diapers.

This is another funny one on the list of homesteader baby registry items because it isn’t a typical baby item. However, we register for a few cast-iron cooking pieces – frying pan combo, dutch oven, and grill pan, and were gifted all of them.
You could just say that the baby needs to eat too! If you haven’t switched over to cast iron yet, now would be the perfect time to make the switch.
I would argue it is the most practical way to cook on the homestead since you can use it over any open flame. It’s also free of chemicals!

You’re living on a farm, so why not embrace it?! Farm-themed toys, but really, farm-themed anything is so cute for your baby!
We love this farm blanket and wooden farm toys. They are so fun and relatable to our daughter as she grows up.

This is such a helpful list! I don’t have kids, but I’m at the age where a bunch of my friends do. Will definitely be checking this out for my pregnant friends!
That is a great idea Kate!
Great list. Sun hats are something I would not have thought of either but they really are so important if you’re going to be outside with the baby!
I know!!
I love the idea of farm-themed toys, a sunhat, and a wagon. Those are such fun and useful ideas to include on your registry! Great list, Kelsey!
Thanks Sarah!
