I’ve been cloth diapering for about five months now and after trying out a wide array of cloth diaper brands on my daughter, I definitely have my favorites! Because cloth diapers are an investment, I hope my best cloth diapers review will make the journey easier for you.
Cloth diapers are like people – they come in a wide array of shapes, sizes, and colors. This makes them very customizable to your family and situation, but also makes it very difficult to choose!
When I was considering my diapering options while I was still pregnant with my daughter, I wanted to give cloth diapers a shot. Not only would it save us money, but it would also match our natural, simple, and old-fashioned lifestyle.
Living on a homestead keeps our mindset focused on stewardship. We want to be the best stewards of the resources God has given us and use everything to the fullest.
We can be good stewards o the earth by using cloth diapers instead of disposables. I knew that using cloth diapers would also motivate me to potty train sooner and even attempt elimination communication.
I was gifted several second-hand cloth diapers and I purchased some used cloth diapers on Facebook Marketplace as well at a great price. There was never a need a purchase any cloth diapers or inserts brand new, which also saved time and money.
If you are interested in beginning your cloth diapering journey, I suggest mentioning it in conversation or asking around. I’m sure you will run into others who either tried cloth diapering and didn’t continue with it or no longer have children in diapers that would love to pass it on to you.
I should mention that all the cloth diapers I own are pocket diapers, where you stuff inserts into a cover. I personally have extremely enjoyed this method as I can stuff more or less depending on the needs for that day.
Let’s check out the best cloth diapers review of all the cloth diapers I received…

BumGenius – best cloth diapers review
I am going to be honest, this is my favorite brand of cloth diapers that I own and have tried. I have about 12 of the one-size, snap closures, pocket diapers in a variety of fun solid colors.
Some of the big advantages to this brand are the two levels of sizing to make the diapers shorter or taller. There are also tons of snaps to size it around the waist at several different levels. These cloth diapers can last you years without needing a new size!
These also do very well at keeping in waste. I have only found that leaks happen when I do not stuff the diaper adequately (I always use at least two inserts now) or tighten it enough.

However, the elastic around the legs has seemed to loosen up slightly over time which could cause leaks in the future. But besides that, the diaper has held up very well through many laundry cycles.
The colors are super fun and BumGenius is a wonderful brand to start off your cloth diapering journey with!
Besides all the snap and pocket BumGenius diapers that I have, I also have one that is velcro across the top, with one level of snaps to make it shorter or taller.
I am not sure BumGenius is still selling these as I know velcro has a slightly negative connotation in the cloth diapering world. The problem with velcro is that it sticks to anything else in the wash with it.
Since I only have a couple of cloth diapers that have Velcro on them, I haven’t noticed that issue for myself personally.
I enjoy this diaper because it is quicker than the snaps when I am putting it on my daughter and it is also easier to tighten, making it even more customizable. The tabs themselves have velcro so you can overlap them as well to get tighter than you could with the snaps.
I personally enjoy this high-quality BumGenius diaper as it is another one of the best cloth diapers review.
I actually only have one from this brand as well but I quite enjoy it and wouldn’t mind a few more. It has two levels of snaps to make it shorter or taller. The top is also velcro, making it easy to tighten.
It is better than the BumGenius brand in that the elastic around the legs is very tight and strong. It has never loosened in the wash and appears that it will remain intact for years!
However, it is worse than the BumGenius brand in that the cloth, soft cotton fabric on the inside that touches the baby’s bum has pilling. It is fairly small and can’t be removed. It has never bothered me or my daughter, but I do wish it stayed smooth like the BumGenius brand.
Another unique characteristic of this cloth diaper is that the insert is attached to it. You can pull it to wash it, but on the top end, it stays attached. In some ways, it makes it easier but since it is my only cloth diaper like it, I would prefer that it was unattached.
There is still room to add more inserts, and even a pocket on the end of the insert to make holding them together easier. I’ll attach some photos for reference below.

I have three different SmartiPants cloth diapers in three different, bright colors. And, I have to be honest and say that these are not my favorite cloth diapers.
They work and get the job done, but there are some improvements that need to be made to them. I did look on their website and it appears that they have newer versions that are slightly better than the ones that I own.
First, there is only one level of snaps to make the diapers shorter or taller. Second, there is only one level of snaps going across, versus the two rows that BumGenius has on theirs, making it hard to fasten and keep tight when my daughter is wearing them.
Also, the insert area where I push the inserts inside is very small and not wide enough for the standard insert size. The way that it is sewn together doesn’t quite make sense, since it doesn’t go all the way to the edge of the diaper like other cloth diapers.
However, the elastic around the legs is tight and the materials have held up very well. I just dread putting this one on my daughter when I see it next in line. It’s more bulky, ununiform, and awkward than the others.
I have one Thirsties diaper that I am currently using, but I used to have more. I didn’t enjoy them at all so I gave them away. The one I have is manageable and similar to the SmartiPants diapers I described above.
This pocket diaper has two rows of snaps in both places – going upwards and across. The elastic is also tight around the legs. And, as a bonus, there is an additional “catch” elastic around the legs to make sure there are no leaks.
However, like the SmartiPants cloth diapers, the insert to put the inserts into is very small and makes the diaper bulky and ununiform. Additionally, the cotton material is very thin and not high quality.
It is one of the best cloth diapers review that unfortunately, is not a favorite of mine.
Overall, I recommend the BumGenius brand, just know that the elastic around the legs will loosen and stretch out, unfortunately. Hopefully, this is something BumGenius is working on updating in the future to match the high-quality elastic other cloth diaper brands use.
