It has been such a busy fall for us as we continue to get our new house situated, preserve apples, begin hunting, plant garlic, clean up the homestead for winter, and more!
Let’s check it out…
Don’t forget to Pin this image for later!
Skunk Visitor
We had a skunk visit us this month and spray its lovely smells all over our barn. The dogs cornered it and we shot it to put it out of its misery. Usually, we only see them as roadkill nearby so this was our first time dealing with the scent. Thankfully the dogs weren’t too bad!
Apple Preserving
Several of our apple trees didn’t produce apples this year, or a lot less, due to the weirdly warm spring we had. However, a couple did still produce a full load of apples and we still have more than we need!
I have been preserving them in numerous ways: freeze-dried “apple chips,” frozen chopped apples, apple cider vinegar, applesauce, and storing a lot in our fridge (since our root cellar is not complete yet). And we just eat a lot every day too!
Since there was no garden harvest this year besides the garlic and a few greens, we are loving having our own apple harvest to preserve for the upcoming year!
Partridge Hunting & First Roadkill
Landon was able to go partridge hunting with a friend one weekend on our land and some state land. They got quite a few and our family enjoyed eating them! He also found a deer that had been recently hit on the side of the road. He took it home and we ground it up for our first taste of venison for the season!
Landon also stocked our freezer with some salmon from the rivers in Wisconsin. Later in the month, more family was able to visit for lots of fun hunting memories this fall!
Prepping The Garden
Because the garden was neglected this year it was a complete mess! We are still working on getting it prepped before the snow comes but we were able to weed-wack it and layer it with woodchips, sawdust, and rabbit manure (we use a no-till system). We are about halfway complete with the project.
I was also able to plant our garlic seed – an entire bed of it! Hopefully, all the garlic will pop up in the spring and we have an abundant harvest again!
Beautiful Nature
We enjoyed so much beautiful nature this month – rainbows, fall colors, and the northern lights! Here are a few of the pictures:
See you next month with more homestead updates!
