With all of our “school year” activities, like MomCo and Wednesday Night Bible Study, coming to a close, it came time to fully move into our project list and see what we can tackle before the baby arrives in August! We only had the first half of the month to work on things because the end of the month ended up being filled with travel and activities, but I’m still proud of how much we accomplished.

Let’s check it all out…

Our Homesteading Journey – May 2025 Update

Baby Rabbits Born and Baby Chicks Growing

You know it’s spring when the baby bunnies are born and the chicks arrive! The bunnies are hopping around now and growing so fast. In a few weeks, they will graduate to their grow-out pen.

Sadly, we lost several chicks from the batch we ordered in the mail this year. Two were dead on arrival, and four more died shortly after. But the rest are doing well, along with the chicks we hatched ourselves. They are all almost fully feathered now and will soon have to move out of the brooder.

Camping and Annual Fishing Trip

Landon took the girls camping at the beginning of the month on our land, which they loved! Then at the end of the month, he went on his annual fishing trip, and our oldest, Harmony, got to join him this year. They had so much fun, but the rest of us are glad to have them back home again!

More Fruit Trees

The fruit trees we got on clearance from Tractor Supply last year never made it, so they promised to replace them for free this spring. We picked up our new replacement trees, but unfortunately, these got hit with late frost as well. But we are going to plant them soon and see if they still make it. We have a pear tree, a peach tree, and two cherry trees.

Cleaning Up The Yard

The biggest project Landon tackled was getting our mess of a yard cleaned up! We had lots of post-house build items and just random items that were stored outside of our barn that had to be organized. But, lots of junk was also left here by the previous owners unfortunately.

We had to take several trailer loads to the metal scrap yard and dump. We also had to move some larger items to a new sheltered area and smaller items into the barn. It feels so nice to have the yard cleaned up and freshly cut! Plus, all the items are accounted for and organized. Next up is getting on the tractor and moving lots of dirt!

Getting The Garden Weeded

It was so nice to get out in the garden again. I planted a few things at the very end of May, mostly squash and various lettuce varieties. And thankfully no sooner because we did have some snow flurries fly in May! The onion sets and garlic are growing nicely too! It was just a lot of work weeding around them as the grass is trying so hard to overtake all the beds, urgh.

It will be fun to get into the garden next month and plant a few more things. Maybe we can even begin to harvest some things, too!

Egg Stand

Our egg stand has been doing well this year as we sell a few dozen eggs every day, which we are so grateful for! However, we still have more eggs than we can handle! I think I will have to sell a few more at the farmer’s market next month if it works out.

Thanks for reading, and check back in next month for more updates!
