It’s sad to think that our house build still isn’t underway. We’ve had several issues with the bank messing things up, but we are getting closer to the point of starting. In the meantime, Landon has been doing what he can to get ready for it!

One positive to the house build not starting quite yet is that we have been able to enjoy summer together as a family before the baby comes soon. We’ve been spending some time at the lake, in the garden, and just being outside all together!

House Build/Tractor Work

We’ve made some progress with getting things set up for the house build, even though it hasn’t officially started. One thing Landon has been doing is getting ahead on milling the wood he needs for the project. We were able to get a load of logs delivered quite easily from a local company.

It’s so helpful to have the tractor now to not just move the logs to the mill but also get some other projects done around the homestead. Landon has leveled out lots of the yard, relocated trees, and fixed other random things with it!

Lawn Mower

We bit the bullet and purchased our first zero-turn mower. It is so necessary for all the grass we have to cut! It felt so good to finally get the grass cut and now all those grass clippings are going to good use mulching my garden.

Kitchen Experiments

Even though we are so busy with so many random things it feels like, I have also been staying busy in the kitchen. I made a ginger bug and have been making our own homemade pop/soda from it!

I’ve also been trying to clear out some of the freeze-drying shelves to make room for more produce coming in from the garden soon. To do that I powdered up our various greens and I am spending time encapsulating them. This gives us greens pills to take daily for an extra nutritional boost!

Baby Egg Laying Chickens And Meat Chickens

Our baby egg-laying chickens we received back in April were finally able to be moved outside into one of our chicken tractors! We’ve had one randomly die so far, but otherwise, they all seem happy and healthy!

Then our meat chickens arrived and took over their spot in the barn. They will stay up there for about 2 weeks before they transition outside to the other chicken tractor. This allows us to have healthier meat as they free-range (we move the tractors to fresh grass almost daily) and eat grass and bugs!

Come August (baby month ah!) we will have the new chickens laying eggs for us, the meat chickens ready to make it to the freezer, and also the rabbits ready to be butchered for the freezer too. It keeps summer busy for us, but totally pays off to have farm-fresh meat all year!

Garden Progress

It has been such hard work being in the garden while pregnant, but that hard work has also been so fulfilling! I have really enjoyed creating my garden space, despite some of the things I have messed up already…oops.

We are harvesting some fresh greens already and I can’t wait to see what else ripens soon. Be sure to follow us on Instagram to see it all!

The garden feels complete in a way right now, which has been wonderful. Everything is planted, mulched, and trellised. Now we just keep up with the daily maintenance of watering, weeding, mulching, etc. while we wait for the harvest! I planted something in every square inch of the garden so it is full to the brim!

Birth Prep

Instead of making freezer meals this time around to prepare for the baby’s arrival in August, I am just cooking up all our meat in the freezer and putting it back in. I figure with all the fresh garden produce coming in, if we have meat ready to go, we can pretty much wipe up any simple meal! Plus, don’t forget we also have lots of eggs to eat too.

We still had about 10 or so meat chickens left in our freezer from last year. I have been cooking them up to make room for the new meat chickens we will be butchering soon and also have cooked ready-to-go meat on hand.

I also cooked up the last of our ground venison from hunting season last fall. And of course, several rabbits too!

Thanks for reading and check back next month for more updates!
