Ah, summer on the homestead sure is wonderful. The sunsets are breathtaking, the weather is nearly perfect, and we are outside all day long! Plus, eating fresh garden salads and vegetables every day just can’t be beaten.
Here are some of the things we have been enjoying on the homestead this month!
Don’t forget to Pin this image for later!
New Rabbit Litters
All of our mama rabbits gave birth to new litters, and all at decent sizes! We are grateful for another wonderful round of meat rabbits that will be in our freezer at the end of the year.
Chicken Updates
The meat chickens have grown so much this month and all have survived being outside in the meat chicken tractor, except one recently. They will be butchered here in a few short months, filling our freezer again with tasty meat!
The new egg-laying chickens will move into the coop from their chicken tractor in just a bit and then we will butcher our oldest hens that they are replacing. Hopefully, we can get all this done before baby number three arrives in mid-August!
Holiday Celebrations
It was so fun to celebrate July 4 and Strawberry Festival with friends and family! We love our small-town community and look forward to these events every year. It was a great break from all the hard work we’ve been doing and a chance to relax and enjoy the summer.
Berry Picking
We are stocking up our freezer again with local, fresh berries! We went strawberry picking down the road at our neighbors several times and have 21-gallon bags full. Plus, I made enough strawberry honey jam to hopefully last us the whole year! Soon we will be raspberry picking on our land and blueberry picking at other neighbors down the road.
The berry patch that we started still needs some extra work and care, but it just isn’t the focus right now. We were able to get about 30 strawberries from it though and some blueberry plants are still growing!
House Build Update
As of right now, Landon has milled almost all the wood we need for our house build. The bank loan is finally complete and permits are in hand. Landon is now focusing on digging the foundation, putting in the driveway, ordering supplies, and leveling some land.
There is a lot to do before winter comes, so we are just trying to trust God with all of it and not be overwhelmed!
Garden Update
The garden has had lots of growth this month! I have harvested the garlic, lots of snap peas, tons of calendula flowers, and salad greens nearly every day. Soon the onions, green beans, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, and cabbage will be ready!
Birth Prep
Baby number three could arrive at anytime now! My due date is in mid-August so we are getting things ready and hoping to complete a lot of homestead tasks before he or she makes its arrival!
So far, we have the birth kit (for another home birth Lord willing) and most of the supplies. But I of course want to do lots more cleaning and organizing as I nest. Please keep us in your prayers for a safe and healthy delivery!
Check back next month for lots of exciting updates! Thanks for reading.
