The first half of this month was still very snow-filled. Our “last” snowfall was first on the 7th, then the 15th, and then around the 20th. But the month ended with all that snow melting, warmer temperatures, and spring sunshine rushing in! And that spring weather sure has us busy now!
Here’s all the projects we tackled in April 2025…
Don’t forget to Pin this image for later!
Baby Chicks
We hatched out chicks in our incubator again, plus we also had 30 more arrive by mail! Although 7 of them died when they arrived by mail, which was sad to see. These birds will replace our old egg-laying Americanas this year. It was so fun for the kids to experience the whole process and they have loved playing with the baby chicks.
In order to get some more space for the chicks, Landon built a second brooder area for them to hang out in, and it is working out well!
Egg Stand OPEN!
Speaking of chickens, we were able to finally set up our egg stand and begin selling our eggs again at the end of the month! It is on the north corner of Pelkie Rd, and you can find information and pictures of it here. We hope you’ll come and purchase some farm fresh eggs for your family with year!
This also means I can finally take a break from freeze-drying eggs, now that we have a bunch stored up again for the winter months. I also tried my hand at water glassing some eggs. I will have to report back in the winter on how those worked out for me.
Breeding and Butchering Rabbits
All the female rabbits are finally bred again after taking a break all winter! It was just too cold this winter. We will only be breeding them one more time before closing up our rabbitry. We will instead be shifting our focus to different livestock like pigs, sheep, and a beef steer, and also doubling our production of meat chickens.
We also butchered our remaining baby/grow-out rabbits. We had 11 of them, which will be a nice addition to the freezer for a bit.
Mission: Homestead Clean Up
Because this is the first time we are seeing the ground again since completing our house build and moving into our new house on our property in the fall, there are still lots of cleanup projects to get done. And, we especially need to get them done now before all the grass starts popping up everywhere!
First, Landon built a new burn barrel to contain all of our trash and have a proper system in place for burning it somewhat regularly. He also fixed up my garden after the snow destroyed some of the fencing and netting. Next, he worked on cleaning up lots of the big things piled up around the barn and property.
And like he wasn’t busy enough, he also did some fun little projects like building a bird house for the kids, making a step stool for under the toilet, and moving some dirt with the tractor. I’ve been busy cleaning up the trash on the property and organizing the various things in the barn and animal areas.
Planting Onion Sets
Because I wasn’t able to start my onions from seed this year due to the basement not being organized enough quite yet, I decided to try my hand at onion sets. I just picked up some locally, probably almost 200 of them, and plopped them in a garden bed. We’ll see how this experiment does!
It’s also been fun to see my garlic sprouting up after the snow finally melted! It is something that brings me joy each spring. The rest of the garden seeds will have to wait until late May/early June to get into the ground this year.
Whew! Was that everything? I certainly feel like there are things I am forgetting to report. But, either way, spring has us busy and outside all the time, and boy, do we love it! See you next month.
