Overview of Adulting by Kelly Williams Brown
This book was a quick and easy read for me. It’s easy to read through all 468 tips she gives, but implementing some of them is harder.
I think every 20-something reading this book should do so with caution. These adulting tips are so useful but until they are implemented they are only tips. I say to read with caution because as I found myself reading some of the tips, I realized I should slow down and actually decide how I will implement them into my life.
So while this book may be a fast read, make it a slow read. Take the time to ask yourself how you will implement her adulting tips into your life.
Adulting by Kelly Williams Brown covers all the topics I think she needed to cover, but I know a newer version was recently released with even more content, which I think is great.
The adulting tips begin with setting your mindset straight. Here on my blog on adulting, when I write about the steps to take in adulthood I always start with the mind as well, so I appreciated that Kelly began her book with this category.
Your mindset has to shift and be in the correct state for any sort of change to happen. Intentionality and setting the right priorities are so important to get you to implement any of the other tips she writes about.
Adulting is a verb that has entered the English language because it is a stage of life we all go through. As a stage, there is a transition and a learning curve. Enter adulting with your mindset in the right place and you’ll crush your 20s while your peer just tries to stay afloat.

The Best Advice in Adulting by Kelly Williams Brown
There were some great adulting tips in this book that really spoke to me and that I think everyone entering into adulthood can take and apply to their life.
First, I love that Kelly gave great advice on living within your means. A lot of us enter adulthood in debt and pretty poor. She gives great advice on how to furnish an apartment cheaply but with style.
She also gives great points on finding an apartment and a wardrobe that is affordable within your means. There is no use in breaking the bank for necessities at this age but there is no need to live in a dump either. Find your means and live within them.
Adulting by Kelly Williams Brown also gives great practical advice on landing your first job. One thing I regret doing was negotiating my salary, and if I had read her book I may have been able to know how to do this before accepting my first corporate job.
She also addresses the art of faking it. I found this extremely interesting, and as it may be somewhat controversial, I found it extremely useful. Adulthood is a lot of us trying to act like we have it all together. And while we might have a grasp on part of our life, a lot of life is just trying to keep the pieces together.
Kelly gave me wonderful advice on how to act like I am older than I am. I always promote being a 20-something grandma, and this goes right along with what I teach. Become wise like a grandma in your 20’s so that you can set the rest of your life up for success. Sometimes that means faking it a bit.
Going off of this, I appreciated her tips on small talk. Do you know that awkward pause at the end of a small talk conversation? I never knew quite how to walk away from that before this book. So simple, yet something I face all the time.
Now I know that small talk doesn’t have to end awkwardly and that I can use that to my advantage. The next social gathering you are at, you can end those conversations smoothly and swiftly.
The last thing I really appreciated was her advice on family communication. I love my family dearly but every family has family issues that we need to work through. She gives great advice on trying to find the balance between being independent and on your own while still remaining friends with your parents.
Particularly, her adulting tips on how to transition from living under your family’s roof to being independent and on your own without tension were very helpful to me.
Overall, Adulting by Kelly Williams Brown gives wonderful adulting tips to our everyday basic needs that occur in this transition phase of our life.

The Not So Good Advice in Adulting by Kelly Williams Brown
While most of Kelly’s advice in her book is impactful and can help you step into adulthood successfully, some of her adulting tips were not for me.
Being a Christian and having faith be a huge part of my life, Kelly’s point of view on relationships did not often align with mine. She regularly encourages some things that go against my values, so a couple of chapters of the book were not for me. If you’re in the same situation, still read the book, just skip those adulting tips.
I also wish she had offered more advice on routine in our everyday lives. Routine is so important for us to make changes and form new habits. Your 20s are the best time to set up these routines and implement them into your life.
I would love to see Kelly write a sequel to her book where she highlights more day-to-day advice like setting up daily routines, being productive, and learning.
On the learning side of things, she does promote reading the news and staying up to date with the world’s topics but she fails to write about continuing education in our lives and how pursuing our passions can lead to world-changing action.
This book, Adulting by Kelly Williams Brown, is not a motivational book to pursue your dreams, but it is full of valuable tips on how to survive adulting.

Practical Ways You Can Apply Adulting By Kelly Williams Brown To Your Life
Adulthood really is a defining decade for our lives. It is where we learn how to handle different situations in our life and it is where we begin to apply habits.
Let’s touch on a couple of chapters here that really speak to everyone from Adulting by Kelly Williams Brown.
First, learning to maintain things in your life is so important. This is a practical tip that can save you lots of money in the future. This goes for things like your car. Keep it maintained with oil changes and checkups so that you won’t have to deal with a huge cost when it breaks down.
This also goes for maintaining your clothes so that you don’t have to replace them as often or produce as much waste as well. By learning Kelly’s tips on washing and maintaining my clothes I can already see them lasting me twice as long.
Another thing to maintain is that Kelly has taught me to take care of houseplants and pets if you have them. But going beyond that, taking care of your body.
While we form habits growing up like what we chose to eat, I know we can form new habits in our 20s. It is a great time to change what you eat and increase your water intake, making it a habit.
I have been increasing my health by eating FAB Four smoothies every morning from Kelly LeVeque’s book and drinking more water.
Healthy habits like this are so important to establish in your 20s.
There is also lots of great practical information on how to get your first job in the workplace and then handle it.
She gives advice I wish I had known before entering the workforce like negotiating your salary, which I mentioned earlier, but also how to act once you get the job.
So you have your resume established, you practice those hard interview questions and you get the job. That’s so exciting but do you know what to do now that you have your own cubicle?
Kelly is great at giving advice on handling workplace culture and office politics. I know this is a situation everyone faces and I appreciate that Kelly touches on this. She also gives great practical advice on networking that I think a lot of people would find very useful.
The last practical piece of advice is I loved her format of a thank you note. It was so simple but so revolutionary to me at the same time.
Writing a thank you note is so important to do in most situations and it should be about the other person. You can make someone feel so loved and appreciated through a thank you note.
Going off of that, she gives advice on tough times like funeral attending and showing sympathy. While this is so basic it is also so practical. The next time you need to show sympathy or
So be kind, form deep genuine relationships, a give thank you notes. Begin thinking like an adult and acting like one, even if you have to fake it for a bit.

Conclusion On The Book Adulting
While there is no way this book could cover everything you need to know in your 20s, it is very intriguing and does give you many basic adulting tips to help you live a more successful life. I recommend reading it.
Be warned, this is not a book that will rock your world. I like to think of it as a guide to finding everything you need in one place and implementing some good habits into your life while you’re still in the defining decade of your 20s.
I would pick up this book if you are a recent college graduate and you want some help in this transitional stage of life. I think it will give you some insight that you wouldn’t know until you experience it.
This is a great book to return to after a year of reading it for the first time. The advice you get in your 20s can be hard because you haven’t quite experienced the advice yet. Read Adulting by Kelly Williams Brown and then begin applying some of the adulting tips.
A year later, read over the tips again since it is a faster read, and see if you have applied any or if there are some you could apply again or improve on.
Overall, adulting is something I am passionate about, and love that there are resources for all of us as we transition through this stage of life.
