First off, I think that the biggest lie we face when it comes to “our calling” is the idea that we need to be told or “labeled” what we are supposed to be. The fact is, I was never told I was a writer at any point during my life.
And because I was never told I was a writer, I thought I couldn’t be a writer.
There’s this notion that we have to be labeled something in order to be it. I thought someone had to tell me that I was good at writing for me to actually believe that I was.
You see, I was always good at writing. I would read in my spare time and write about my feelings whenever I could. Speaking wasn’t my preferred form of communication. Writing was.
I only found out I was a writer when I realized I had nothing else to keep me occupied except for my hobbies. After college, I wanted to pursue something besides my regular day job, so I turned to write. My hobbies are reading and writing and they are what I enjoy doing most in my free time.
You don’t need to be labeled a “writer” by your friends, your family, your teachers, or whoever you look up to, to be a writer.
I want to dive into how you can tell if you are a natural writer, even if no one has given you that specific label before.

How To Tell If You Are A Natural Writer
Do you keep a journal?
Do you express your feelings through pen and paper when you are mad?
Is your favorite method of reaching out to someone a long-scripted text over a phone call?
Do you look up new words when you are reading and play with the way they sound?
Do you report your findings on pen and paper?
Do you hate being in front of a camera when you have to give a message?
Do you find it easy to write a 10-page paper on something when you already know the material?
Do your writing classes in college come easily to you?
Do you prefer written assignments over other kinds?
The list could go on and on, but these are some great starter questions to get you on the track to see if you are a natural writer or not.
In college, I only took a couple of writing classes. I started to notice that I was scoring really well in these classes and that my teacher always had really positive feedback. I wasn’t trying very hard, yet I was still doing decently well.

Being a business major, most of my college classes involved homework that was turning in long written assignments. I could easily sit down and crank out a 10-page paper a couple of days before the due date, especially if I already knew the material. I slowly realized that writing wasn’t so bad.
If you prefer writing assignments over other assignments, or if you can easily write something out to express yourself, then I am telling you that you are a natural writer.

How To Grow As A Natural Writer
If you are a natural writer there are tons of job opportunities available to you. And not just freelance work.
When I started realizing that writing came easily to me and that I was a natural writer, I realized that I could make this into a career for me. However, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be writing solely.
Most blog posts or articles online will tell a natural writer that freelance work is the way to go, and that might be the case for you.
If you want to start making easy money writing for others then I suggest checking out Fiverr here.
Fiverr is an online platform where creatives and writers like yourself can find freelance work and make money designing or writing for other people. It is a great side hustle to start with and eventually grow into a full-time business.
Consider joining Fiverr and signing up here if that piques your interest.
However, for me, I didn’t want writing to be something I was forced to do. I wanted to write for the sole purpose of loving every part of it and using it to express myself.
If you want writing to be more than just another task or job, and instead have it be a passion that you can pursue without burning out, then I suggest starting a blog.
Natural writers are people that love writing. And natural writers often turn into extremely successful bloggers.
Why? Because they are expressing their thoughts and ideas in a creative way. They are not blogging merely for the purpose of making money most of the time. They are blogging because they love to write and that is how they communicate with the world!

As a natural writer, you can certainly enjoy freelance work and writing for others as a side hustle or career; however, you can really enjoy writing when you write what you want to write and share.
Not only is blogging a fantastic way to make a few more dollars from ads, affiliate links, or sponsored posts, but it is also a great way to express yourself, help others, and pursue your passions.

A Tool To Help You As A Natural Writer
Besides freelance work and starting a blog, you could also pursue classes to fine-tune your work as a natural writer.
Even though writing may come easily to you, it will still require work to become a better writer. I also have to work on becoming a better writer.

Writing comes more naturally to me than others, but I still make many writing mistakes and fail to write in engaging ways often. Read through some of my blog posts and I’m sure you’ll find a typo here or there.
That’s why I encourage you to look into writing classes on CreativeLive. I love this platform because it is designed and built with creatives in mind.
Every time I hop on this site I just get excited because like-minded individuals are all pursuing their creative callings and fine-tuning them so that they can in turn, grow their businesses, help others, and make a difference in this world.
Head to CreativeLive.com and either browse by the categories on the side or type “writing” in the sear bar. Several different classes at all sorts of different price ranges will pull up for you.

How do you find the right class for you?
Well, now that you know you are a natural writer or at least feel confident in giving yourself that title, you should examine where your writing skills are at.
What do you like writing the most? Is it informative information in a certain field? Or do you enjoy fictional stories?
There are so many options when it comes to writing. I would really take the time to decide what it is you like writing about the most and base your class choice on that decision.
I like helping others through my blog post based on my own personal knowledge and experiences. A class on story-telling would be very helpful to me because it’s something that does not come as easily but would engage readers better in my blog posts.
For you, a class on writing books might be a better fit because writing fictional stories comes more naturally. You might even consider business classes on CreativeLive that would help you sell more books or get information on what working with a publisher is like.
Other options include getting more emotion in your writing or learning to spell and edit your work better.
CreativeLive has thousands of different classes available to help you nail down your writing, become a better writer, and find your perfect fit when it comes to being a natural writer.
What To Do Now As A Natural Writer
If you haven’t taken any of the action steps yet that I talked about above, or you skipped to the bottom, let’s review what steps you can take next:
-You can sign up for Fiverr and start doing freelance work
-You can start a blog and begin sharing your creative juices with the world
-You can start taking classes online on CreativeLive.com to become a better writer
And that’s just the beginning of the side hustles and opportunities available to writers today.
With so much to choose from, sometimes it can be really hard knowing what to do next. I encourage you to first believe in yourself.
As cliché as that sounds, believing in yourself does not come easy when you have never embraced being a writer before. It sure didn’t come easy to me.
It took a lot of time for me to overcome the fear of what others would think of my writing and how they would respond to it. Writing isn’t always easy in the sense that it involves overcoming a lot of worry and self-doubt.
And when others aren’t natural writers, it takes time for them to warm up to the idea that you would rather spend your free time alone with a pen and paper or a laptop. Maybe you can’t relate to the TV shows they watch because you prefer to read or write.
Your hobbies may be reading and writing, and in turn that is likely what you will spend your time doing because they are your passions.
Stop worrying about what other people think and start pursuing what you love.
When I made that decision it was the best decision I could ever make. It allowed me to overcome so much fear, self-doubt, and worry and flourish into the woman God created me to be.
It gave me a voice and a way to express myself to the world and it also allowed me to pursue what I really loved.
Believe in yourself and believe that you are a natural writer because you are!
Whoever is holding you back, whatever fear is holding you back, or whatever your mindset is right now, it is time to change it. Start writing. Start doing. Start today.
Tell me in the comments below if you are a natural writer or what you love most about writing. Do you have a blog? Do you write on Fiverr? Or have you taken classes on CreativeLive before?
I would love to connect with my fellow writers down below!

When I was younger, I would find myself writing my parents long letters when I was upset or apologetic. I would 100% classify myself as a natural writer, but I totally agree that for the longest time I felt someone else had to validate that idea for me to even consider myself as a writer.
I did the same thing, Cynthia! It was so much easier to express myself that way! Yes, I hope this post helps others realize that you don’t need to be validated in order to do it(:
I only checked off like 3 of those questions but have always known I’m a writer since I was a kid! I always wrote short stories and stuff. But i was told I couldn’t be a writer so it sent me down a windy roundabout road to where i am today lol!
Haha I totally understand Rachel! Keep doing what you love!
I was always good at writing, but I thought I wanted to write fiction – make up stories, write books. Then I started blogging and realized I’m much better at writing non-fiction, reviews, recommendations, etc. And I really enjoy it!
So glad you found your sweet spot Becky! I am the exact same way(:
