If you want a positive, natural, healthy, and informed pregnancy then you have come to the right place! When I found out I was pregnant with our first I could not wait to read all the pregnancy books for a natural birth.
With all the unnecessary interventions a hospital places on pregnant and laboring moms, along with the idea that birth is some sort of an emergency, I opted for a home birth.
In fact, I am even open to unassisted births, also known as free birthing, in the future! Childbirth and pregnancy are at their core the most natural process a woman can go through because that’s exactly how God designed it!
The best pregnancy books you can read starting today are positive pregnancy books for a natural birth! Let’s check them out…

I cannot recommend this book enough. In fact, I cannot recommend a Bradley Birth class enough!
Before visiting with my midwife, I had never heard of Dr. Bradley. During our prenatal appointments, my midwife made this book required reading for me and my husband to read together. She knew how much it could benefit us as we prepared for a home birth!
It was one of the first pregnancy books for natural birth that I read, and I gleaned a great deal of information from it. I became informed on the procedure’s hospitals have in place and formed even strong opinions behind my “why” for doing a home birth.
One of the best pieces of advice I can give to any new mom preparing for a natural birth and delivery is to prepare for birth for as long and as detailed as you would prepare for your wedding!
Spend more time educating yourself on birth than preparing your nursery so that you can advocate for yourself!
Reading this book was the best decision I could make. I knew my options and I knew the pros and cons of each decision in birth that I was making.

I would encourage you to read this book with your partner. Yes, it can feel long and cumbersome at times, but it is important that you are on the same team. My husband and I made it simple and read one chapter out loud before we went to bed each night.
This is one of the pregnancy books for a natural birth where you will learn about The Bradley Method. The Bradley Method is focused on husband-coached childbirth. Your husband is your coach and there to help you with all your needs during labor and delivery.
The Bradley Method also focuses on relaxing during labor to allow for the most natural birth possible. I’m still pregnant with our first, but I can’t wait to implement the techniques I have learned very soon!
If you are looking for Dr. Bradley’s own book on the subject, here it is: Husband-Coached Childbirth by Robert A. Bradley

Out of all the pregnancy books for a natural birth, I found this one very empowering.
The Natural Pregnancy Book is loaded with valuable holistic information on your pregnancy. For me, I knew I wanted to use holistic and natural remedies whenever possible during my pregnancy. However, I found it difficult to know what the safe and recommended advice from midwives and doctors was.
Aviva Jill Room is a midwife, herbalist, and Yale-trained MD, Board Certified in Family Medicine with Obstetrics, and a graduate of Dr. Weil’s Integrative Medicine Residency (University of Arizona). She has worked with women and their health for decades.
I love this book because it was uplifting, making me more and more confident in a natural birth as I read it!

If you are looking to have a positive, natural birth, then I am guessing you are also hoping to breastfeed your baby exclusively for a certain amount of time. It is no secret that breastfeeding is the best possible way to nourish your baby!
One thing I didn’t know before I became pregnant was that breastfeeding can be very difficult. I had assumed it comes easily and naturally to every mother and baby; however, that’s not always the case.
Breastfeeding often takes time, help (from a lactation specialist), and energy to be successful!
This book was a wonderful resource for me to read during my pregnancy because it answered so many of my questions surrounding breastfeeding. It is a huge book packed with wisdom and brought up things I had never thought about or considered.
This book is from La Leche League, a non-profit organization that is here is help you in your breastfeeding journey! It has become the leading breastfeeding advocacy organization in the world. I would encourage you to pick it up today!

We all have fears, preconceived notions, and ideologies around the topic of pain in birth. Especially as Christians, as we know that Genesis 3:16 says, “To the woman he said, ‘I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain, you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you’”
What does this mean for Christians that are pregnant and about to enter labor? How can we have a positive pregnancy despite the pain?
Aubry does a wonderful job of pointing us back to gospel truths in this book, giving us the best framework about what the Bible says about birth.

Wow, I can rave about this book forever!
Like I was saying earlier, the best thing you can do during your nine-month pregnancy is to become informed!
You need to prepare for your birth as long as you would prepare for your wedding. You need to spend more time educating yourself (so you can advocate for yourself) than preparing your baby’s nursery! This book will help you do just that.
Did you know that the United States is among the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the industrialized world? How can that be with all our technology and medical advances?
I, at first, was like most people out there who assume that doctors and the healthcare system are looking out for us and have our best interests at heart. However, this isn’t usually the case and Jennifer shows us this with evidence-based research in an easy to digest format.
I hate to say it, but C-sections, diapers, and formula are so common in today’s society because they are huge moneymakers. And that’s just a couple of examples! After reading this book, I became even more confident in my decision to have a natural home birth, exclusively breastfeed, newborn procedures, cloth diapering, elimination communication, baby-wearing, vaccinations and so many more natural things.
This is a book filled with facts that will inform and empower you to make the best decisions for you, your baby, and your family!
You don’t have to make every single “natural” decision in the book, but you do need to be informed on each decision you make so that you can feel confident in it. I hope you will read this book immediately.

Nutrition is a vital aspect of every pregnancy. Especially if you want to stay low-risk and have the natural birth you desire.
If you want a positive, natural, and healthy pregnancy then start with your diet. Then follow it up with exercise. Eating the right foods, taking the right vitamins, drinking at least two liters of water daily, and going on a walk every day is the best way to bring a healthy baby into this world!
I loved reading and owning a copy of Eating for Pregnancy because it gave me valuable recipes that were filled with nutrition, targeted at helping my pregnancy stay low risk and my baby healthy for months.
Let’s face it, we are busy, and eating healthy is not easy, especially when you are so tired and perhaps nauseous from your pregnancy. If you are struggling to fill your body with healthy, nutrient-dense meals each day then pick up this book.

This was such a beautiful book to read during my pregnancy, especially since it is my first go-around at this! I wanted to know everything that was happening with my body and how it was changing each week.
I loved this book because each week was a new subject. I wasn’t flooded with so much information that I didn’t know where to start. Instead, I could just read the week I was currently on in my pregnancy and apply the information slowly. Inside the book, you will also find positive affirmations, recipes, and perspectives from certified nurse-midwives and nurses.
If you want to take a natural approach more slowly, then this is a great book to start with. It keeps all the concepts light, fresh, and simple. It’s not a textbook on why natural methods are the best, but more of a guide that you can take from as you see fit.
This is a wonderful book to follow week-by-week as you learn more about natural pregnancy and birth.

I used to want to do a home birth but ultimately went with hospital birth with my midwife! Not all places are pushy. 😉 I didn’t read any books because I’m so not a reader but I wanted fully unmedicated labor and birth. Sadly, it did not happen. I developed very high BP and HR and was diagnosed with preeclampsia during labor. I got an epidural due to help and reduce the chance of further complications and possible c-section. I still am mourning the fact that I couldn’t go med-free… but I’d rather the epidural than an emergency c-section or… Read more »
Thanks for sharing Summer! I wrote this post and published it before giving birth to my daughter. I was planning a home birth but it ended up in a c-section…not at all what I was planning! I had to go through the same struggle of pride. You are exactly right, it is important to prepare but if it doesn’t go as planned – that is OK! (: Each birth story is unique and important <3
Great resources! I know so many people having babies right now, and I’m sure they’d appreciate this list.
Glad I can help!
Books are such a great resource to prepare you for something like this! Thank you for the recommendations, I especially like the one about eating and nutrition.
Of course, I hope the books are helpful!
