If you’ve read any of the books in my blog post 7 Must-Read Books On The Traditional Foods Movement For A Healthier Life then you’ve already read the best cookbooks on the topic! But, I couldn’t help but share more cookbooks using real food ingredients as I discovered them.

I love these because they use real foods – buttermilk, whole grains, animal fats, wild game, farm fresh eggs, and more. We should be eating healthy whole foods, which means no weird ingredients!

But if lard, sauerkraut, and einkorn sound like weird ingredients to you, that means your journey is beginning. Our government does not promote real food ingredients, they aren’t cool in most social settings, and yet they directly impact our health daily.

Don’t let these ingredients intimidate you, and instead use these cookbooks to practice changing the way you eat! These are great places to start as you begin your journey in the Traditional Foods Movement.

Let’s check them out…

7 Cookbooks Using Real Food Ingredients From The Traditional Foods Movement

This book is written at the heart of the Traditional Foods Movement. Not only is it beautifully written as the author explains how she loved real food ingredients to eventually become the CEO of a sustainable agriculture company, but you also know she understands the importance of good food by her passion.

The beginning of the book talks about the building blocks of her recipes: sofrito, aioli, broth, lard, tallow, butter, and more! The recipes focus on real animal proteins, rich fats, healthy dairy, and garden fruits and vegetables. Plus you’ll find unique (and wonderful) ingredients like lamb heart, chicken liver, zucchini blossoms, rabbit, etc.

The cookbook starts with tons of snacks, starters, and cocktails. Then it moves into main dishes of pasta, vegetables, fish, eggs, and meat. It closes with deserts. While at first, it may seem intimidating to source these ingredients, especially if you aren’t on a farm yourself, the hard work will pay off. This cookbook will make the learning curve easy to cook with real food ingredients!

  1. 100 Days of Real Food: How We Did It, What We Learned, and 100 Easy, Wholesome Recipes Your Family Will Love by Lisa Leake

It’s time to ditch the standard American diet and take the challenge: 100 days of real food. The author shares how reading In Defense Of Food and watching Food, Inc. she learned what real food truly was and started the 100-day food challenge while blogging about it.

This book is so relatable to so many Americans, myself included. We were all convinced at the time that highly processed food had nutritional value and convenience was most important. The author simplifies for you exactly what real food is, the impact it has, where to shop for it (or how to grow it yourself), and how to start cooking with it!

I love that this book has real-life examples of how to read labels and how they misguide you. It is so helpful to anyone just starting this journey and cuts down the learning curve, helping you not give up.

This book truly covers everything from picky eaters to hosting guests, meal planning, and budgeting. Plus, the second half of the book is all recipes. I know the lunch box recipes and simple snack ideas are especially helpful to so many families!

Fermentation is extremely important to our lives as it directly affects our health! Fermented foods are a key ingredient in the Traditional Foods Movement because of the amazing health benefits: direct probiotics to our gut!

The first chapter of this book talks all about these health benefits. And while it’s not a traditional cookbook, you will learn how to make any vegetable ferment, bean ferment, dairy ferment, breads (like sourdough), grains, wines, beers, and vinegars.

I’d say those things are all an important part of my diet! I am excited to add more fermented versions of all of these to my life with these recipes. It’s something I am slowly learning over time, and you can too!

  1. The Herbfarm Cookbook: 200 Herb-Inspired Recipes, Plus a Complete Guide To Growing, Handling, and Cooking With Fresh Herbs by Herry Traunfeld

Cooking with fresh herbs is a wonderful way to get more flavor in our meals and nutrition in our diets! As someone who didn’t grow up learning to cook many meals, I have always found cooking with herbs intimidating. Besides your basic Italian seasoning, they have been something I was never intentional about adding to dishes.

This book certainly makes it easier, especially now that I am growing some in my garden! This is one of the cookbooks using real food ingredients that covers all the categories from vegetables, meats, and desserts, to full meals, condiments, and beverages! It also has a chapter on growing your herbs and another on how to buy, handle, and cook with them. Plus, a full chart and section in the back of the book where each herb is broken down – a must-have reference point while cooking!

Our children deserve healthy food, yet everything marketed towards them could care less about their health. Instead, big corporations make addictive food with harmful ingredients. I appreciate this cookbook and its mission to help children fall in love with real food!

Real food is not hard to prepare once you get over the learning curve of cooking everything from scratch. It’s a journey, and parents should bring their children along with them as they go on it!

I appreciate that this book is not just a cookbook but also an honest educational book for parents. It starts with teaching you how to raise children to love real food, buy that food, and then what to do with it once you bring it home. It could not be more easy! Part two is all the recipes you need to get started, including every meal and snack category.

This is truly a book you can trust as a parent to be sure you are only allowing real food ingredients into your home! The education in this book is completely a game-changer, and once you know the truth there will be no going back. It shares exactly what ingredients are in certain items and amazing choices to swap them with at the grocery store.
