  1. Back to Basics: A Complete Guide to Traditional Skills by Abigail Gehring

Have you been following our homesteading updates? You can start reading them here.

A quick summary is that my husband and I purchased 80 acres in the Upper Peninsula to chase our dream of living more remotely and becoming more self-sufficient. This isn’t just because of the uncertainty of the world right now but more so because of our desire to use the talents God has given us to the best of our abilities.

Since we started dating we realized that we have a love for animals, living off the land, and creating things ourselves. Back to Basics was the perfect book for me to pick up in this season of life I am in. It covers everything from what you would picture as the “olden days” or 1800s more closely.

Here are some of the categories it covers: how to buy land in the country; how to clear land and build several types of homes (from scratch!); how to build fences and other items; how to create energy from wood, water, wind, and sun; how to raise your own vegetables, fruit, and livestock; how to store the harvest; how to quilt, loom, weave, make perfume, woodworking, metalworking, soap making, candle making, basket weaving; and ways to enjoy the great outdoors!

Ok, so if you are thinking that none of those describe your life right now, please don’t turn away from this book. I truly believe every 20-something should pick up this book and give one of the categories a try.

Trying a skill with your hands may open a world to a new hobby you never knew you enjoyed. Or maybe you discover that you can garden and start eating healthier. Or you realize that the business of the city is actually harming you and you decide to buy a house and escape to the countryside.

Whatever it is, this is not one of the adulting books you should turn a cold shoulder to.

  1. Adulting 101 by Pete Hardesty and Josh Burnette

What a perfect book for anyone transitioning into their 20s or finding themselves feeling lost or stuck in this new decade.

I like to think of my blog as an “Adulting 101” starting point but I love that Pete and Josh have condensed it all and piled it into a book! This book covers everything from the “why” and purpose behind your adulting season of life to practical answers on how to get a job, build relationships, manage money, manage your time, and then pull it all together!

My favorite part of this adulting book that the other adulting books lacked was that it focuses on the extreme: helping you not completely wreck your life and instead completely change the world.

  1. The Size Of Your Dreams by Dave and Chana Mason

This was a fun read! If you don’t yet know, Dave reached out to me to see if I wanted to read his new book The Cash Machine which makes pursuing financial independence a fictional story with real-world application.

Instead of writing another boring book about money, Dave and his wife Chana made it a fun and relatable story. Since I love to learn about the FIRE movement and pursue financial independence I couldn’t wait to read this book. I enjoyed reading it and included it in my popular blog post The Top 10 Most Informative Books On The FIRE Movement.

Dave reached out to me again and asked me to read and review his book The Size Of Your Dreams, a book that makes goal setting relatable through fiction.

Instead of another boring self-improvement or self-development book, I loved that this book walked you through the steps of setting and achieving goals through fictional characters.

You see, I didn’t have to read the steps and then try to implement them myself. I could, instead, implement them more easily as I read about the characters in the book failing or succeeding based on their life choices.

This book is a “not so normal” self-improvement book you need for this season of life, making it one of the more unique and fun adulting books to read.

  1. Adulting For Christians by Jenny Ingram

I forget how I came across Jenny’s new book Adulting for Christians, but when I saw it I knew I had to read it! I asked Jenny if she wouldn’t mind sending me a copy to review (since we are both so passionate about helping other Christians on their adulting journey) and she gladly sent it over my way.

I was pleasantly surprised when I began reading this book that it was more of a workbook structure without being overwhelming. They say, if you write something down you are 10 times more likely to remember it than if you simply hear it or read it.

Adulting for Christians ties Scripture into this season of life you are walking through, gives some helpful tips then helps you tie it all together to yourself personally through workbook activity and personal application review questions. So, you aren’t just left hanging after you read something!

I would describe this book as light yet impactful and it has already helped me on my adulting journey (especially the taxes chapter!). The random pieces of humor also made me smile and realize that adulting doesn’t have to be hard if you chase after the right things.

  1. How To Cook Everything by Mark Bittman

I have to be honest, I haven’t finished reading this book yet. I’m not the best cook and I think many of you can relate to that!

We don’t grow up learning to cook as much with all the easy grocery store easy meal options, not to mention all the to-go options from fast food to high-end restaurants. And let’s not forget about the invention of the Crock-pot and Instant Pot.

However, it is still so vitally important that we learn the basics of cooking in our 20s. I am especially experiencing the pressure with a child on the way. I want to provide wholesome meals for my family each day, and while I have a good foundation, there is still so much for me to learn in the kitchen!

Just like learning to cook healthy meals and using essential oils for healthy living, many of us need a guide to maintain our car and your 20s is a perfect time to jump into adulting books just like these!

Car maintenance is my least favorite part of adulting! I feel so clueless and just don’t even know where to start half the time.

This book is a short and simple guide to keeping your car safe. I wish I had read it sooner. I encourage you to read it in your 20’s and keep it as a reference as you navigate taking care of a vehicle. There’s more that goes into it than you might realize!

  1. The Curated Closet by Anuschka Rees

The Curated Closet has been on my bookshelf for a couple of years now and I am finally getting around to reading it again. It is helping me simplify my wardrobe to pieces I only wear often and enjoy owning.

Over the years, many of us just collect more and more pieces for our wardrobes. From retail sales to hand-me-downs to buying items for just one-time use, we have more than we need, and it just creates clutter.

This book has played a role in opening up my eyes to fast fashion and the need for ethically made clothing. It has shown me that I don’t need more clothes to feel beautiful or even happy. In fact, it’s all based on your personal style and an ongoing approach to curating your closet as you change year after year.

  1. To Chase a Dream: A Soccer Championship, An Unlikely Hero and a Journey That Redefined Winning by Paul Kapsalis and Ted Gregory

This was a book that my soccer coach in college assigned for us to read and then discuss as a team. I remember it being impactful then and saw it still sitting on my bookshelf several years later and decided to give it a go again.

I’m not done reading it again but I can already feel the power and energy through the pages. This book is a true underdog story and will completely inspire you.

No matter where you come from or what you have done with your life so far, it is key to know that your 20s are a defining decade.

  1. The Holy Bible

This may seem clique to some of you, but I honestly wouldn’t be who I am without the saving grace of Jesus and the Word of God.

Each morning, I read Scripture and it is the ultimate guide to adulting. God’s word shows me how to live a godly and upright life, how to love and serve others, and how to honor Him with my thoughts and actions.

Last June, I purchased a new Bible from Hosanna Revival and started reading through the entire Bible. Now, a little over a year later and I am halfway through reading through Psalms.

It was never my goal to read the entire Bible in one year and I specifically did not want to follow a reading plan because when you fall behind it can often become discouraging and cumbersome. Taking it at my own pace has been a joy and I have learned so much as I simply read or dig deeper into various parts of Scripture.

Have you read through the entire Bible before? If you never have, then it is time to start now. This is my first time and I am loving reading it for myself in its rawest form.

Even if you aren’t a Christian give reading the Bible a shot. You may be pleasantly surprised!
