Motherhood is hard. Yet, sometimes, moms make life harder without intentionally doing so! Having been a mom myself for only a few years now, I have begun to notice this.

As a brand-new mom, you simply lack the experience needed to be efficient and skilled in your motherhood tasks. And on top of it, the mental load of it all will weigh you down. (I talk about the cycle of the mundane and the overwhelm in motherhood here.)

Now, after giving birth to and raising three children (with a fourth on the way), I have come to notice where I can focus on eliminating or changing things from my life to make it easier! There are simply things that make life easier. Yet when we become lazy or don’t focus on efficiency, we make life harder on ourselves.

Here are some ways moms make life harder and what you can do to make it easier…

  1. Having Perfectionist Tendencies

One way moms make life harder is by having unrealistic expectations in motherhood. For many, this is a perfectionist tendency. We want a clean house that is always tidy, or we want our kids to always look well-dressed and put together. And we want to appear to everyone else that we have it all together. (Instead, be vulnerable and ask for help!)

But, you quickly learn that you have to let some things go! There is no perfectionism in motherhood. Even if money isn’t a limit, children will be children. Things will get broken, destroyed, and lost. We will never have it all together, and there is no perfect balance!

Life throws us new challenges each day, and to make life easier on yourself, it’s about shifting your mindset. Shift from the perfectionist tendencies, and a heart that compares and covets what we see online or with others. Instead, find contentment in motherhood each day!

This is something I have to personally work at each day. To practically apply this to your daily life as a mom, say 5 things you are grateful for each day (it’s part of my husband and I’s evening routine). Also, eliminate your social media, either temporarily or permanently! See if you notice the dramatic impact that I have noticed in my own life.

  1. Forgetting To Do What Is Best For Your Family

This also has to do with contentment and comparison. As moms, we make life harder by trying to mold our families into ideals or visions of what we see in other families around us. We put the kids in sports because that’s what everyone else is doing. Or we spend money on a certain vacation because we’ve seen others do it, too. Oftentimes, we make decisions in life like this without even realizing it.

But, instead of just doing what others are doing, it is so important to do what works best for your family! Moms make life harder by not saying no at times. We overcommit or overschedule, or fail to ask our husbands for wisdom before making a decision. Instead, pray for wisdom before making any family commitments.

Give yourself the freedom to say no to extra things on the calendar, and remember that saying no becomes easier over time. Moms, you can protect your own time as well for your well-being! What could you say no to today (maybe it’s a yes, but a different yes) that would help your family thrive despite what others are doing?

  1. Not Having Consistent Routines

Lastly, one way moms make life harder for themselves is by not staying consistent in routines their family needs. When we have standards, expectations, and rhythms for our family members to follow each day, it keeps everything running smoothly.

The kids know what to expect, they know what task to do next, and they know the habits your family has created for them. Yes, this does take upfront work of training your children and reminding them. But once the foundation is established, children ask fewer questions, you don’t have to micromanage, and they don’t put up a fight!

We can be consistent with our actions, even down to all the simple tasks that every day requires. Sit down and write out all your family routines, even post them up for everyone to see. What is the morning routine? What is the evening routine? And what do we allow and don’t allow at certain times of day?

But another key to this is making sure the family schedule stays simple. We all need unstructured free time, especially kids for their development. With a simple and consistent routine, your whole family will feel safer and secure, and the house will run more smoothly!

Yes, moms make life harder at times, but they also learn how to run a household efficiently and smoothly! Which tip will you be implementing first to help you make life easier? Let me know in the comments below!

I have three children, almost four, all four years and younger, making my days very full! These habits for mom are certainly vital for me to keep my head on straight in the busyness and chaos, and even in the slower, more mundane days of motherhood.

When mom has specific habits each day, including these very practical ones I shared earlier, it doesn’t just keep the house flowing and functioning properly. It also gives mom the sanity she needs to provide for everyone’s emotional needs.

While most of us naturally fall into our daily habits and routines, sometimes we also need to be intentional about including specific activities in those routines. There are habits for mom that I am intentional about including each day, because without them, I’ve noticed some things just fall apart.

What habits will you be intentional about adding to your routine? If you have one, two, three, or more little children underfoot, then take a few moments to consider your day-to-day life and if any of these habits would benefit your family. You can always add one in at a time, or take one out that is too overwhelming for you.

Let’s check them out…

  1. Cycles of Chores

First up is what I call my cycle of chores. As a stay-at-home mom, I have time to get the chores done each day, but I must do them during their scheduled time. Otherwise, they may not get done due to procrastination or distraction, and then in turn become overwhelming.

The key is to stay on top of everything each day so that you are never at a point of too much! So, form a cycle of chores for yourself where you schedule them to be done at a certain time of day each day. For example, this could be always washing the dishes after each meal. Or always doing the laundry in the morning, as it is for me.

In the morning, after breakfast, I wash the dishes, start a load of laundry, and make sure I know what we are having for lunch and pre it if need be. Some days, I also put a few loaves of bread in the oven that fermented overnight. Then we do our animal chores (we live on a homestead) and enjoy the day, or run errands.

After lunch, I switch the laundry over, prepare and cook dinner (or delay starting it so it will cook at the right time), and tidy the house before nap time. After dinner, I clean up the entire kitchen and dining room, fold the laundry, and we all clean the entire house together. Then we do our evening animal chores. Other tasks like cleaning the bathroom, organizing a room, etc., are mingled in on specific days throughout the week.

If I were to do the laundry in the afternoon instead of the morning, which sometimes happens due to appointments or other events, it certainly throws my day off, and I more easily forget about it. Or, if I don’t make prep dinner right at lunch time, I often don’t have it ready in time.

Consider what chores you need to get done each day, and when is the best time of day to do them. If you have some older children, consider how they can be involved. Then stick with your cycle of chores for a few weeks until it becomes one of the habits for mom that grounds you!

  1. Tidy Times

Another key habit for me each day as a mom of little kids is establishing tidy times. These are during transition times during our day. Particularly, before meals and before nap time or bedtime we clean up all of our toys and make the house tidy again.

That doesn’t mean the house is spotless or perfectly clean, but it is visually pleasing to see if you are passing through the room. I will say this is only possible when you keep a minimal amount of toys, and it is very easy for your kids to put them away. Young children need things minimal, easy, and simple. When it is not overwhelming for them, they are perfectly capable of cleaning up after themselves.

There are so many amazing benefits to this that our family has noticed. First, we enjoy the visual rest it gives our family throughout the day. Second, the children come back to their toys, excited to play with them again. Third, it teaches the children to clean up and put things back after they are done with them, giving them a sense of accomplishment and responsibility. And last, it allows me, as the mom, to rest during naptime while my children are also resting, as I am not using that time to just clean up after them.

  1. Spare Moments Not Lost

One thing I have grown in over the years of motherhood is noticing when I moment is truly a spare moment. When you realize all the children are playing so nicely together, and you have ten minutes to yourself. Or when you realize a task didn’t take as long as you expected, and you have some free moments in your day now.

Whatever it is, when the spare moment presents itself, enjoy it! Grab the book and read a chapter or two. Sit down and drink your tea or coffee. Or bake a special treat that no one was expecting.

Snatching those spare moments to enjoy the pleasures of life for yourself can truly be so refreshing to us busy moms! Don’t pick up your phone and waste it away! The key is to find fulfilling rest, even if it’s just enjoying the silence, in those moments. Make it a habit to look for the spare moments each day.

  1. Donation Bin Ready

I mentioned having minimal toys above, but having a minimal house in general is so beneficial! A habit I have formed over the years is just having a donation bin in the corner of my room.

As soon as I notice something that we don’t use anymore, it goes straight to the bin. It keeps the house less overwhelming and calmer. And I’ve noticed that if I don’t have a bin set aside for donations all the time, I won’t be proactive with it.

Which is why this wasn’t a habit for so long. For it to be a habit, you have to constantly have a place to bring those donations where your kids won’t find them and ask about them! Some people use the back of their car or a storage room. Find a spot and keep adding to it until you can bring it all in and say goodbye for good! A bin like this is a great option.

  1. Quiet Time

As moms, we need our own quiet time! It can be hard in several seasons of motherhood to get up before the kids, or stay up later than them at night, to find this time. Currently, my quiet time is during the kids’ nap time. This quiet time is from 1 pm to 3 pm every day.

Even if all my children don’t fall asleep, they know the routine of tidying up after lunch and getting ready for nap time/quiet time. Everyone spends a couple of hours alone at the same time each day to rest and recover before tackling the rest of the day.

I especially love to listen to podcasts or read books during this time. I also use this time to read my Bible, journal, and pray. It helps me refocus on what truly matters each day, and it helps my children get the rest and recovery they need as well. One of the best habits for mom is to have a family quiet time each day!

  1. Food Prep

When I shared my cycle of chores, I also shared that I prep all my food in advance. This has been a sanity-saving hack I cannot go without now! It keeps meal times easy, simple, and so convenient! And did I mention that I make all our meals everyday from scratch?

The key is to always be one meal ahead of the next. I always keep breakfast super easy. It’s scrambled, fried, boiled, or casseroled eggs (we have our own chickens, and so this is always an option). Sometimes there is fruit or bread to go with it. Lunch is always leftovers or something easy like sandwiches. And then dinner is prepared at lunch time, so there is no more food prep work to be done after 1 pm. I always make sure there is meat thawed, and if not, then it’s pasta night or an egg dish again!

Make it a habit to always be thinking at least one meal ahead. For some people, this means a planner with specific meals planned. For others, it might just be go-with-the-flow, but still on top of it. I fall right in the middle there. Find your rhythm, and just be thinking ahead!

  1. Schedule Time With Other Moms

Lastly, make sure that you have one of the most important habits for mom: being with other moms! You need community, support, and friendship as a mom. For me, it’s been hard to find this unless I specifically write it into my schedule on the calendar.

With lots of little kids underfoot currently, for me, that means being a part of our local MOMCO group. It forces me out of the house every two weeks to be with other moms. I get to learn about important topics, and just have fun and socialize while my kids also have fun in childcare!

It also means meeting up semi-regularly with other moms in my church community. Or, inviting moms over to my house for playdates. Whatever it is, I need to write it on my calendar so that it happens! Find those play groups in your community and go to them. Be vulnerable, get past the awkward stage of friendship, and don’t be scared to reach out to those moms. (I’m preaching to myself here, too!)

Let’s be honest: To homestead with little kids requires a new level of resilience! It can be hard to find the time to get things done and even harder to bring the kids along for those tasks, forcing you to slow down.

My husband and I began homesteading right after we got married, but we also welcomed a new child into our family each of the first three years after our marriage! Having three toddlers underfoot has slowed us down on some of our homesteading goals.

But that doesn’t discourage us. It’s been beneficial for us! Sometimes, we need to be forced to slow down to prevent overwhelming ourselves and getting in over our heads. Plus, it allows us to grow our skills in line with the growth of our children. As our children grow, so do the things we can accomplish and our ability to meet our needs!

For example, we can expand our garden as our family starts eating more. We can raise more meat with larger livestock as our needs demand it. And, we can become more knowledgeable on various topics before investing large amounts of money and potentially failing.

As first-generation homesteaders ourselves, learning old-fashioned skills has not come easy. And yes, having three children under three years old has forced us to slow down. But with each year, we have become wiser and can now start teaching our children the skills we have learned! To homestead with little kids, you have to keep the end goal in mind.

Here is how we homestead with little kids…

Key Things To Remember

Remember that to homestead with little kids will mean that a lot of your time is spent with them. They have so many needs and curiosities. But they also take lots of naps and go to bed early!

Use nap time to rest if you need it, but also use it for getting those tasks done where it is hard to bring a child along. For example, if it’s too muddy for the kids to stay near you while you clean the chicken coop, then do it while they sleep.

My other tip is to just embrace the season of life you are in and know that it will get easier! They won’t need you as much in the years ahead, and they will be able to help you more too. It wasn’t until after my second child that I stopped stressing as much because I realized I knew the simple truth of “this does get easier.”

My husband and I are a team when it comes ot homesteading. As you’ll read about below, the way we do it with so many little kids is by doing it together! If he’s in the middle of a task, I can take the kids inside and feed them lunch. Or if I need to get something done in the garden, he can watch the kids for me. If you have family nearby, utilize them and ask them to watch the kids for you on busy homesteading days!

Last, keep things affordable by building it yourself. Build your chicken coop, build your meat rabbit cages, make your garden, etc. Our weekends are usually spent doing tasks like these, when the kids are playing alongside us or taking naps.

Easy Homesteading Tasks You Can Do With Littles Underfoot

  1. Garden

The first homestead task we started with little kids was getting a garden started. You can till the ground or use a no-till method like this. You can even grow many plants in containers on your deck or porch. Then just plant some seeds according to your growing zone and see what harvest you can get! Read some of these beginner garden books if you need some help along the way.

The key is to not jump into a garden that will be too much for you to manage. Your time is limited, so focus on growing some food that your family will enjoy and have a garden that won’t overwhelm you. You can go to the farmer’s market or sign up for a CSA to fill in the gaps.

  1. Egg-Laying Chickens

The next super simple way to begin homesteading is to get a few chickens for a daily supply of eggs. You don’t need to start with a lot, and they pretty much take care of themselves! Give them the food, water, and coop they need in your backyard, and they’ll bless you back by eating the bugs, providing eggs, and, of course, giving you some great entertainment. Protect them from predators, and make sure you follow city guidelines, depending on where you live.

  1. Meat Rabbits

The next homesteading animal we decided to raise were meat rabbits. We’ve been raising them for six years now and love how easy they are to take care of. We kept them in our garage at our old house and now in our barn on our homestead property.

We feed them twice daily, breed them on a schedule, and butcher the babies after 4 months. It’s a great way to keep a nutritious and fresh meat source in the freezer for our family. There is a small learning curve, but the day-to-day maintenance has been easy to manage while parenting so many little kids! Plus, the rabbit manure is great for our garden!

  1. Meat Chickens

When our family needed more meat than just eggs and meat rabbits, we jumped into raising meat chickens each summer. We built chicken tractors and moved them each day along our grass. After eight or nine weeks, they are ready to harvest, and we have a year’s supply of meat in the freezer! It was much simpler than we had anticipated. The hard part of the learning curve was perfecting the butchering.

We did have to invest in a deep frying pan to scald the birds, a feather plucker, and killing cones to make the job easy. When you know you are going to be using these items for years, it makes it easy to invest in them.

  1. Fruit Trees and Berries

One blessing we had when we moved to our homestead property was the numerous apple trees it had. Every fall, we have an abundant apple harvest that we preserve. However, we have also planted several other fruit trees. In a few years, we will have pears and cherries to harvest as well.

A great way to start creating a homestead property is to plant fruit trees, especially if you plan to stay at that property for a long time. Another great way to get ahead of the game is to plant or forage for berries.

For us, that looks like planting blueberry bushes, strawberry plants, and elderberry tree starts. We also forage for blackberries and raspberries on our land. We go to our neighbors and pick their berries to fill in the gaps until our bushes are mature. Don’t let your young children prevent you from getting ahead on these simple tasks!

  1. Food Preservation and Herbalism

During the long winters, we need food stored up. To preserve our eggs, meat, apples, and other garden produce, we started learning various preservation tasks. With each one, we discovered what worked best for our family and what we liked to eat most.

From freezing and water-bath canning to fermenting and freeze-drying, we tried just about all of it! Because we were able to learn things slowly over the first few years, it was easy to do while we had babies and toddlers. Start researching the best ways to preserve everything you grow and raise so that you can save money and eat your hard work all winter long on the homestead!

On that same note, start learning herbalism and how you can heal your body and your family’s bodies through natural medicine. Use wild plants, create tinctures, make healing balms, and more. These are some books I recommend on food preservation and herbalism.

  1. Cooking From Scratch

Along those same lines came cooking our meals from scratch. As soon as I became a wife and mother, I quickly felt overwhelmed with making meals for my family. I didn’t have a lot of kitchen knowledge from how I was raised, so I took it slowly.

First, I began with basic crockpot meals and easy American dishes. But over time, I tried more ingredients and new recipes and started buying less processed food from the grocery store. Before you know it, I had learned so much! Cookbooks like these and these were especially helpful.

Now, I make nearly everything from scratch! That includes bread, condiments, desserts, and everything in between. It certainly helped me learn by just practicing with our homestead ingredients each day! If you homestead with little kids, start cooking from scratch each day.

  1. Hunting/Fishing

Once we moved to our homestead land, my husband was able to start hunting it. But, even if you can’t hunt your land, there are usually other options, like state land, available to you. One way we save so much money is by eating venison and fish as a main meat source. My husband can go hunting and fishing while I stay back with the kids.

Apart from the eggs, chicken meat, and rabbit meat that we raise ourselves, we rely on venison and fish to keep us stocked up all year long! Having fresh and nutritious meat available to us year-round makes homesteading so worth it.

As our family grows, we will need to transition to raising more meat like beef steer, pigs, or sheep. We will see what makes sense for us next!

  1. Building Projects and Equipment

A huge part of homesteading that isn’t often talked about is the various projects. So many things need to be built, fixed, or modified on homesteads. For us, we had raw land with a barn. We had to take time to first build a tiny house and then our new house on the land.

That was hard enough to do with little children, and also with raising animals and gardening on the side! Plus, some tasks just couldn’t get done until we invested in the proper equipment, mainly a tractor. It helps to take things slow on the homestead so that you can invest in these things and make future tasks and goals easier as your family grows!

  1. Use Your Local Community To Fill In The Gaps

When you have a homestead with little kids, you simply can’t do it all! That’s where you can rely on others in your area to fill in the gaps.

We purchase maple syrup from our neighbors because it just isn’t something we’ve been able to accomplish yet with little kids. We do the same thing with honey, u-pick berries, and farmer’s market produce.

But we also sell our extra eggs on our farm stand on the corner of our property. Plus, we sell our rabbit manure and baby rabbits. We have lovely neighbors whom we have gotten to know who also trade fresh herbs or strawberry runners with us. Homesteading can create such wonderful relationships.

Use these slower years with younger children to grow your local community. Then, as your homestead grows, you can help others in the future! Remember, don’t be overwhelmed by this list. Simply start with one thing and build from there!

If you have a second baby on the way, you may wonder what you can reuse for baby #2 and what you will need to purchase again. While you can reuse most things, it’s essential to be prepared! Plus, your budget will thank you.

It can be hard to imagine your family in the future with a new baby. Things will be different, and the adjustment won’t come easily to everyone. Your motherhood will kick up a notch.

But don’t fret! I’m here to encourage you that the beauty of giving your child a sibling is truly something you will cherish forever. As a mom myself, currently pregnant with baby #4, I can tell you from experience that it is all worth it!

I hope this list of baby items will make your life a bit easier as you prepare for your second baby! You can know what to save, what to declutter, and what to budget for in the future. Congratulations, and remember to soak in every moment!

Let’s check it out…

19 Things You Can (& 11 Things You Can't) Reuse for Baby #2

Tips Before You Start

The first tip is to create a second baby registry checklist. It will be an easy way to keep everything organized. But, most importantly, it will be an easy place to send people who want to bless you with more gifts, even if you aren’t having another baby shower.

That way, you can receive the items that are a necessity to you and not more junk that will just overwhelm you!

Here is my post all about setting up an Amazon Baby Registry. It definitely makes things easier the second time around having everything online in one central location. It’s free and you will also get a free welcome box!

My second tip is to always check thrift stores and Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or eBay for baby items. You can find so many barely used things for an incredible deal. So, if you don’t receive as many items as gifts this time around, you can still keep things very affordable.

What You Can Reuse For Baby #2

There are so many things you can reuse for baby #2. I am sure I am missing something, but here is a list of things you probably have saved from your first baby.

Changing Pad –            Just wipe it down and get it clean for your new baby. You can also get new changing pad covers or wash the ones you have.

Crib –                                This depends on the age of your first child, but if you don’t need a second crib and can move your first child into a pack-n-play with a mattress or toddler bed, definitely reuse your crib and mattress!

Bassinet  –                      You may not need to move your toddler/second child out of their crib right away anyways if baby will be sleeping in a bedside bassinet. Definitely reuse this! If you co-sleep, it’s even easier to reuse your bed.

Crib Sheets –                          Wash and clean all your crib sheets and reuse those. Only replace them if you feel they are too frayed and unsafe. Our crib sheets are still holding up after three children!

Infant Car Seat –          Yes, you will need a second car seat, but you should have your older child out of the infant seat and into a bigger convertible one. You can reuse the infant one, just check the expiration date on it.

Cloth Diapers –            If you cloth diapered your first baby, then be sure to get those pulled out again, washed and sorted! The best part of cloth diapering, in my opinion, is that it saves money and you can reuse them for years and years!

Swaddles/Blankets/Diaper Bag – Of course, pull these out of storage and use them again.

Baby Clothes/Hangers –        Depending on gender of your children, you have the potential to reuse all or some of your baby clothes. I keep all our baby clothes in vacuum seal bags in our attic organized by age and gender. It makes it easy to pull out exactly what I need.

Baby Carrier –                             Reuse the carrier that you ended up loving and sell whatever carrier you didn’t end up using as much. Now that this is your second baby, you know what works and what doesn’t for you!

Swing/Bouncer/Toys/High Chair –    All these larger baby gear items you can reuse again! But, maybe you want to include some of these toys on your baby registry checklist.

Monitor/Sound Machine –     Keep using these unless you need a second one for separate rooms of the house.

Stroller/Wagon –          You should reuse these again, but you may want to upgrade to a double stroller or a wagon. Sell the stroller you currently have if you do. We personally love this wagon and it has been all we need for all of our children.

What You Can’t Reuse for Baby #2

Second Car Seat –      While I listed that you can reuse the infant car seat, you will need a second car seat. You may have to purchase a convertible car seat for your first child and begin to transition them into it if you haven’t yet already.

Second Car Mirror – With another car seat purchase often comes another car seat mirror.

Wipes/Diapers –          Get stocked up on wipes and diapers (if you aren’t using cloth diapers) because obviously those run out!

Baby Clothes –             Depending on gender and seasonality, you may not be able to reuse some of your baby clothes. Prepare as best you can by getting the new clothes you need.

Bottle Brush –               I find that my bottle brushes that I use to clean my kids water bottles get pretty nasty, especially if I haven’t used them for a bit. I like to get a new one and have it on hand for when I need it.

Breast Milk Storage Bags –    If you use a disposable version, don’t forget to purchase more of these if you use them!

Pacifiers –        I don’t personally use pacifiers with my children so this was not something I knew about. But, you shouldn’t reuse pacifiers with your second child because of germs and potential damage to them. If you want to save them as back up, sterilize them and examine them really well before baby arrives.

Bottles/Nipples –        Just like pacifiers, I didn’t know this about bottles because I exclusively breastfeed. But, you should purchase new bottles (or just nipples if you have glass bottles, which I recommend) because of the germs and damage they may have. Thankfully, they are not expensive.

Breast Pump Parts –   If your pump parts have been sitting for a long time it is best to replace the parts because of bacteria and possible damage. Look at the tubing, valves and membranes. Hopefully your breast shields are just fine.

Do you need a good podcast recommendation? Here are some of my favorite podcasts for Christian women as a busy mom! Each podcast offers different topics and discussions, so there is something for everyone.

I love listening to podcasts during my kids’ quiet time in the afternoon or after dinner when I’m washing the dishes and closing up the kitchen. It is so enjoyable, but I also have to remember that as a Christian it is important to only fill my mind with what is true, good, and right (Philippians 4:8).

These are Christian podcasts that I have personally enjoyed over the years and found to align closely to scripture. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean I endorse all opinions or perspectives presented. Some of them I listened to when I was still single or newly married. Now, others that include parenting topics interest me more. But in all seasons, we must use discernment when we listen to an outside voice.

I didn’t include any sermons or Bible apps in this list. However, listening to the Bible in audio form or a sermon series from a trusted pastor can be so beneficial to our spiritual walk, so consider that as an option as well.

Let’s check them out…

  1. Relatable with Allie Beth Stuckey

I had to include Allie’s podcast first on my list because it is currently the one I most enjoy and listen to most regularly. I love that Allie covers all sorts of topics involving culture and politics. And, I love that she comes to it with a Christian perspective. I feel equipped to answer some hard questions in life after listening to her or her guests.

I also enjoy and recommend her books, “You Are Not Enough and That’s Ok” and “Toxic Empathy”.

  1. The Durenda Wilson Podcast

Durenda is one of the podcasts for Christian women that provides loads of wisdom. She is a homeschooling mom and also a grandmother, faithful to her many callings. After reading her books, The Unhurried Homeschooler, and The Four Hour School Day, I knew I had to start listening to her podcast for more wisdom.

She doesn’t only discuss homeschooling, but also homemaking, parenting, and Christian living!

However, I love Katie and Elisha’s ministry and vision for sharing the love of family and encouraging other families towards Christ! They talk about all sorts of topics related to the Christian family. These also offer unique perspectives on large families, as they both come from families with 10 and 11 kids.

I’ve been listening to Alex’s podcast since the beginning. Now that it has rebranded, I still love it and the mission! Alex interviews two guests every week to share how to heal a sick culture, whether physical, mental, or spiritual. I have learned so much about health and wellness just from listening to these guests, that sometimes it’s hard to keep up with!

I love that she keeps me informed and focuses on our whole body! Alex is a Christian and while she lets her guests share their perspective, she is selective on who she has on the show and shares her perspectives as well.

As a Christian mom, I am so thankful the Lord has not left me defenseless against the devil, who attacks me daily! I’ve been studying the Scriptures to put on the armor of God as a mom so that I will not continually fall prey to his schemes.

What is the armor of God? Ephesians 6:10-20 (ESV) says:

The Whole Armor of God

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.” (emphasis added)

The devil especially targets my mind as a mom. It is my desire to be prepared for his attacks! I do that by putting on the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes with the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and sword of the Spirit!

As I study each one of these I want to learn what that looks like for moms in particular. How can I wear each of these items for battle every day as a wife, mother, and homemaker?

Let’s check it out…

How To Put On The Whole Armor Of God As A Mom Today

  1. The Belt of Truth

Truth is what we are given in the Bible. Therefore, everything else must align with that truth or it is a lie from the devil. And he certainly is the father of lies (John 8:44). The devil is constantly lying to me each day.

These lies include: You’re not loved or desired. Your home is ugly. You’re not doing a good job. You don’t have the latest products. You’re fat. You’re failing your children. You’re not doing enough. The list could go on and on.

If I don’t stop those lies in my head immediately, and take the thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) immediately, then those lies win and I start to believe them as truth.

We put on the whole armor of God as a mom when we first chose to repeat truth to ourselves instead of believing the lies. Instead of the lies going to my head, I listen to: God chose me. He loves me. I am working with excellence for the kingdom of God. I’m not perfect but the Lord helps me. I am worthy and beautiful before Christ. All His promises are true.

  1. The Breastplate of Righteousness

What is righteousness? It is being made right before God! When we recognize our sin, repent of it, turn away from it, and accept God’s gift of salvation we experience His righteousness in exchange for our sin and brokenness!

It is not our good works that save us, but purely the grace of God! God’s righteousness protects us like a breastplate because we are made new in Him. As a mom, we need to make the decision every day to stand confident in the truth that He has made us righteous before Him!

I think the best way for us to do that is to spend time alone with Him. Time alone with God should include reading the Bible, praying, and meditating on His truth. In some seasons of life that looks like getting up before the kids (the ideal) and spending about half an hour to digest it all.

But, in some seasons of motherhood that is nearly impossible. Instead, I use nap time or the evening to connect with my Savior. Whatever season I am in, I need to remind myself of His righteousness by being alone with Him.

  1. Shoes Of The Gospel of Peace

Because Jesus died for us and rose again, we have good news (the gospel)! We put on the whole armor of God as a mom when we are confident in that good news. It brings peace, not only to our lives but also to the lives of others!

When we share the good news with our words and actions to our children, husbands, and friends, we are wearing the shoes of the gospel of peace. That is displayed through the fruit of the Spirit (Galations 5:22-23).

When you are in a heated incident with your child and you choose to show them kindness, you display the gospel and bring peace. When your husband wrongs you and you forgive him, you show him the sacrificial love you also experience from Jesus. And when you turn to Christ when you are overwhelmed and worn thin instead of wine, chocolate, or something else addictive, you choose to display the gospel with self-control!

HOW TO PUT ON THE WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD AS A MOM

Don’t forget to Pin this image for later!

  1. Shield of Faith

Faith is sustaining to the mom facing Satan’s attacks. Because we have been saved through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9) we don’t have to rely on outside things to keep us going.

No amount of diets, binge eating, shopping sprees, sex, social media, awards, etc. can ever sustain us in this spiritual battle! Sure, they make us feel good temporarily. I have been there! But, they never fulfill.

We can have faith and trust God that what He is doing in our lives is for our good (Romans 8)! He is there for us when we need Him the most, we must simply take it to the Lord in prayer! How simple this is yet how so easily I forget.

Another way, besides prayer and Bible reading, that we can keep our shield of faith on is by fellowshipping with other believers and attending church regularly. When we commune with others in the body of Christ our faith is strengthened and we become renewed! Don’t we as busy moms especially need that?

  1. Helmet of Salvation

How can our salvation be our helmet? Well, remember how the enemy attacks our thoughts and minds throughout the day as moms? Our mind is protected by our salvation!

When we choose salvation in Christ we are given a new heart and a new mind. We now live in truth and have the power of the Holy Spirit to keep us from falling prey to lies. We need to continually renew our minds in truth, wearing all of the armor together!

Our salvation also keeps us set apart from the world. When we don’t follow the lies of the culture that the devil promotes, we are transformed (Romans 12:2). We can live in freedom from those lies each day as busy moms! (I’m preaching to myself here!)

  1. The Sword of the Spirit that is The Word Of God

God’s word is our most powerful tool! It gives us our truth, faith, gospel, righteousness, and salvation. Jesus used the Sword of the Spirit when he was in the wilderness being tempted by the devil (Luke 4).

Memorizing scripture is a weapon that cannot be thwarted. Repeat your memory verse throughout the day for the ultimate way to fight the devil. Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

Our confidence comes when we understand that knowing and praying God’s word is powerful! Pray for God to help you get this confidence by establishing a consistent quiet time with Him. Pray for strength to put on the whole armor of God as a mom daily.

We have the tools to fight our battles! It will build our faith and our family’s as well! Let me know in the comments below, how will you put on the whole armor of God as a mom today?

As a mother of three toddlers, I understand the difficulty of not thinking that slow living and motherhood can exist in the same sentence. Isn’t motherhood exhausting, overwhelming, and draining?

Yes. But also, implementing daily habits can change everything. These slow-living motherhood practices will change how you function daily as a mom. They will help you be more grounded, confident, and present with your children.

And you don’t have to do them all at once! Start with a few simple practices to lighten your load, lift the pressure off of you, and start gaining endurance. You can pick one of two from the list of slow-living motherhood practices below to get started.

Let’s check them out…

5 Empowering Slow Living Motherhood Practices For The Whole Day

  1. Intentionally Start The Day

How do you start your day? I’m sad to admit that most of my mornings aren’t intentional. Before my feet hit the floor in the morning, I’m already thinking of what challenges I am going to face.

Instead, it’s important to start the day with a quiet time of reflection. Think of what you are grateful for. Ground yourself in a hopeful tone. It can be a quick prayer, journal entry, or just quiet meditation.

I often recommend getting up before the kids wake up and spend quiet time alone. But, if I’m honest, that doesn’t happen most mornings for me. So instead, I focus on making a conscientious choice to be proactive and grateful. An intentional morning, even for a minute or two, will change the course of your whole day!

  1. Choose Your Yes and No Wisely

Honoring your time and energy is an overlooked slow-living motherhood practice. We need to learn when to say yes, and when to say no. Both can protect you and help you create healthy boundaries for yourself. Say yes to the things that nourish and empower you! Say no to the things that suck away all your energy.

It’s not something that comes quickly or easily, but it is something that takes practice. There are times to give of ourselves and serve others, while times to step back and put our own needs first. Carefully consider your calendar each day so you can show up as a cheerful mother to your children!

  1. Take Care Of You

On that same note, when you feel drowned taking care of everyone else, find time to also take care of yourself. I often forget to take care of myself and do things that truly nourish me. A slow-living motherhood practice of nurturing your mind and body helps you show up for everyone else refreshed and reenergized!

Is it a workout? A good book? Or that warm cup of tea, that brings you new energy? It’s a simple daily habit to implement and once you do, your other family members will learn to respect it.

  1. Have A Supportive Community

It’s so important for mothers to have fellow moms who understand the ups and downs of parenting. We need the support, encouragement, and comradery. We don’t need to go through this alone!

My favorite places to find this is at your local church and MomCo group. These welcoming environments are places where you can find the connection and community you need. For me, it has given me relationships I never knew I needed but am so happy I have in my life as a mom.

Part of slow living is just having others to do it with! It’s not chasing the next thing but being real and honest about our mistakes, imperfections, and fears. We can have compassion for ourselves and others – what a beautiful thing!

  1. Closing Out The Day Right

Too many times I end my day crashing or doing an activity that doesn’t prepare me for the rest I need, like watching a show on my laptop. Ideally, mothers need evenings to unwind, reflect, and relax.

By creating a slow evening routine, you allow your body to prepare for the rest it needs. Personally, a hot shower, a good book, and a cup of tea by candlelight are perfectly relaxing for me (especially in the winter!).

When we implement these slow-living motherhood practices into our day, we can thrive as mothers! Taking care of ourselves is just as important as taking care of everyone else. Which one will you be implementing first? Let me know in the comments below!

When you simplify your life as a Christian woman you open up time, space, and energy to grow closer to God. Over the last few years, I have truly been leaning into the mindset of “less is more.”

What are the things that are life-giving in my life? Spending time with God, connecting with others, and (surprisingly) it is joyfully and generously giving and serving others. When we participate in hustle culture, the rat race, keeping up with the Joneses, etc. we become drained and burnt out.

Letting go leads to abundance. I recently heard this quote by the Puritan preacher Jeremiah Burroughs, “A Christian comes to contentment, not so much by way of addition, as by way of subtraction. Seeking to add a thing will not bring contentment. Instead, subtracting from your desires until you are satisfied only with Christ brings contentment.”

It is so difficult to give up our consumer mindset in today’s culture. But here are a few things I strive to do and that you can do to simplify your life as a Christian woman.

Let’s check them out…

  1. A Morning Checklist (Not Doing It All)

I first heard this idea from Mystie at Simply Convivial. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by a planner and falling behind on it constantly, grab a cheaper alternative: a pack of index cards.

The night before, write tomorrow’s date and three simple tasks you would like to complete. If I am feeling very overwhelmed, I will have a weekly card as well, with all the tasks that need to be completed that week. Then each day I can slowly do things toward each of those tasks.

I also write something to encourage me or focus on each day so that my head does not explode with all that is ahead of me. The simplicity of the index card truly keeps me grounded and on track. Ditch the fancy planner!

Throughout the day I check off the items on the list and reference it, and then at the end of the day, it just goes in the trash. It is cheap and easy to use, and so much simpler than the other home and life management systems presented to us.

When we are intentional with our time, we can be intentional with investing in our relationship with God and our relationship with others!

  1. Getting Rid of All Social Media

Since getting rid of all my social media accounts I have felt so free! I am refreshed, more present, and content each day because of it. No more ads constantly making me feel the need to purchase something, no more wishing I was somewhere or doing something else, and no more distractions when my children and husband need me most.

It truly is so easy to simplify your life as a Christian woman when you do this yet so many of us won’t. It took me so long to get to this point. The social media accounts addict us, think we are missing out, and beg for our attention all day long. Don’t let them control you!

As a Christian woman, you were made for so much more. Go out into the real world and make a positive change in your family and with others face-to-face. It is so life-giving to impact others in a real, tangible way. You can do it!

Additionally, it has made my phone boring. I don’t look at my phone in the morning anymore, I don’t keep it near my bed, and I barely look at it throughout the day. It has opened up time to let my mind wander into prayer, sit down and read my Bible, and serve others with simple things to make their life easier.

If you don’t think that you have time to give someone a listening ear, make a meal for a friend, serve at church, drop off a random gift to your sibling, etc. then you spend too much time thinking of yourself. It’s a hard reality I have come to face. Even consider eliminating your smartphone altogether to give yourself the breathing room to serve others. These are great ways to simplify your life as a Christian woman but you first have to give it a try.

  1. Learn What You Can Control

While it’s easy to say, “Don’t worry about things that are beyond your control.” it’s not something we easily live out. This includes the news, the weather, the traffic, what others think of you, how others respond, what you think about, etc. Instead, lean into what you control.

You can control how you respond to situations and how you spend your time and money. Our words and actions make such a difference in how events play out in our lives and how we represent Christ to others. As a Christian woman, you simplify your life when you focus on what you can control throughout your day.

Pause and pray before reacting. Think before you speak. Choose to fill a need. Ask others how you can best serve them. Fill your mind with God’s promises. Don’t overthink about the worries of your life and give them back to God.

You can also simplify the friends that you have and the influences that are on you. Reevaluate how you spend your time, who you are influenced by, and what you think about throughout the day. Then pray for wisdom and grace from the Lord to change those things!

  1. Speaking of Finances

I truly believe that the way we spend our money is a reflection of our heart. How much do you consume compared to how much you give? It is convicting for me as well.

When you set up a budget and live within your means you simplify your life as a Christian woman. (I like the EveryDollar app!) The limits that our finances have on us are not burdens but blessings. It keeps us from overconsuming, following trends, and falling into the culture of this world. It is a gift to ask God how you can use your limits appropriately. Saying no is hard but so much better for us in the long run.

With the items that you currently have, declutter them and be generous with meeting others’ needs. I have learned that the less I own, the more I am free to do other things, like serve others! To not have the weight of so many physical items on me, I have the capacity to “store up treasures in heaven.”

  1. Your Time And Energy Matters

After you simplify your possessions, simplify how you use your time. Volunteer at church where your talents matter and where you can be 100 percent engaged. Don’t just check the boxes, but use your energy, time, and talents to truly make a difference in the kingdom of God.

You can be generous without people-pleasing others. We love to serve when we are fully satisfied in Christ, not when we are looking for the approval of others. Examine your heart to see where it may be emotionally tied to certain events in your life. Ask God for His help to reexamine your schedule and use your time and energy wisely.

  1. It’s A Lifestyle

A simple life is truly a lifestyle. Health is a lifestyle. Growing in your relationship with God is a lifestyle. Speaking kindly to our family members is a lifestyle.

These are not things you cram into a one-hour calendar block. When I freed my mind from this mentality, I was able to really simplify how I viewed the world. Our mission as Christian women is to glorify God, serve Him forever, and live a life that brings others to Himself.

We do this through each thought and action we have throughout the day. While that may sound overwhelming and not simple, it is important to remember that Christ works through us. None of this is in our own doing. Yes, we need to make these decisions for ourselves each day, but it is the power of God that works through us to bring people to His kingdom. It is not of our own strength.

Remove distractions (keep a task list, delete social media, control your thoughts, have a budget, and serve others well) so that you can have the time to read your Bible consistently, pray throughout the day, and become sanctified to reflect the character of God.

I recently heard that the mundane and overwhelm in motherhood constantly take turns wreaking havoc in your mind as a mom. I found that so relatable!

Currently, I have three toddlers and have been living in a state of overwhelm. But before that, I battled the state of the mundane when I became a new stay-at-home mom. It was difficult to find joy in each of those seasons when they initially hit.

Over the course of that cycle from overwhelm to mundane and back again to overwhelm I have learned some important life lessons. Many of them have been difficult to walk through but as I come through to the other side, I can look back and see what worked and what did not.

Here are my tips for you as you balance the cycle of mundane and overwhelm in motherhood. Let’s check them out…

How To Balance The Cycle of Mundane and Overwhelm in Motherhood

  1. The Mundane Is A Blessing

I recently heard someone say something along these lines that completely shifted my mindset: It is a blessing to be in the mundane moments of motherhood because that means your life is secure.

You have security in the home you live in, the food that is supplied, and the health of your family when the daily tasks feel mundane. If they weren’t mundane, your life would be in a state of chaos.

We are blessed to not face the insecurity of wars, the trauma of weather events, lack of food, pandemics and viruses, etc. The list could go on! I had never considered that perspective before. A simple, boring life is truly a blessing! Yet, Satan tempts us even during these times to despair.

When life feels mundane as a mother – folding the same basket of laundry, washing the same dishes, mopping the same floor – I can see the blessing in all of it! I am safe and secure enough to do these daily tasks without interruption.

  1. Overwhelm Does Not Last

We cannot function in a state of overwhelm forever. At some point, it will end and there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

I can speak to this directly as someone who just went through the hardest year of my entire life. My husband built our own house from scratch (minus the foundation, but even milling all his own lumber) in a year while experiencing a severe tractor injury. At the same time, I gave birth to my son while basically being a single mother to my two other toddlers in postpartum and then suffering a miscarriage. There is more heartbreak to our story as well that I won’t share at this time.

But, the point is that the overwhelm felt so extreme at times that I thought it might be too much to bear. Yet God is faithful. Keeping Him as my rock kept my hopes up. I knew He would provide and I knew “this too shall pass.” We go through trials and tribulations to grow closer to the Lord and become more like Him!

He places us in seasons of overwhelm to mold us into people who reflect His holiness even better. The state of overwhelm is not easy by any means, but it is worth it!

Now that we have reached that light at the end of the tunnel I can look back and see how effective that season was in my motherhood journey. But without trusting the Lord and turning to Him in the hardest moments, the outcome might have been much different.

  1. Living In The Glory Days But Preparing For the Days Ahead

I now call it the glory days (or moments) when I think I have missed both these seasons. It is when I am not overwhelmed and I am not discontent in the mundane. It is when I can truly say that I am content and thriving in my motherhood.

And while I rejoice in those moments, I also am not naïve anymore to the cycle that will come again. I will be tempted by the mundane next, or I will face a season of overwhelm in the blink of an eye.

You never know what life will throw at you. And so I prepare for the future. I remain grounded in reading God’s word and praying to Him. I get ready to fight off the lies in my head when the discontentment settles in. And I change what my priorities are when I get overwhelmed so quickly.

I have learned that to balance the mundane and overwhelm in motherhood, you have to prepare for it!

  1. Practically, Make Each Day Count

How do you prepare for it on a more practical level? When you are in each of these seasons: stop and write out your priorities each day.

I first learned about this from Mystie at Simply Convivial. She shares that instead of relying on a planner that doesn’t serve you well, just grab a pack of index cards. Each evening prepare for the next day to the best of your ability.

I start by writing the date at the top. Then, three goals I have for that day to achieve. It can be as simple as homeschool, make dinner, and clean the kitchen cabinets. I sometimes have a weekly checklist as well where then I can work on a small part of weekly goal as one of my points.

Then I write something to focus on or something to encourage me. It keeps my mind grounded and from the temptations to be overwhelmed or begrudged by my circumstances. As I go through my day I reference the index card, check off the items, and stay focused on what really matters that day.

As simple as that sounds, it has truly been something practical that has kept me from the negative thoughts of the mundane and overwhelm in motherhood. Just having something to ground you (which first and foremost is my morning quiet time with the Lord) keeps your mind away from the lies that we are fed in motherhood.

My last tip I shared about in this blog post. It is to completely get off of social media as it is often a driving cause of this cycle of mundane and overwhelm in motherhood. It may seem difficult at first, but it has been so incredibly freeing to me!
