As soon as your child can talk they can begin memorizing scripture! But you may become overwhelmed when you try to teach your kids to memorize scripture.

Do you sing songs? Pick short, easy verses? Which verses should you start with? All these questions flooded our minds as we considered the best way for our toddlers to memorize Bible verses.

We knew we wanted them to learn large chunks of scripture, and hide them in their hearts for life. We didn’t want the classic short verses to be the only Bible verses they had memorized. And, we wanted these verses to come to their minds each year of their life and not escape their memory.

Our strategy was habit stacking and consistency. And to our surprise, it worked exceedingly well! Our 2-year-old and 3-year-old both have large passages of scripture memorized, including full passages like Psalm 1, Psalm 8, and Psalm 23. They have also almost completely memorized Romans 12. We don’t say this to brag, but to show you that it is possible (and easy to do)!

Here are all the details on how you can begin having your children memorize today…

Our Secret: Habit Stacking

You may have heard of habit stacking before, particularly in books like Atomic Habits. I didn’t realize this was what we were doing at first, but then I noticed it was exactly what we were doing and it worked just like all the professionals say!

Habit stacking is taking a habit you already do, something you may not even notice you do every day, and adding another habit to it. It’s much easier to accomplish your goals when you habit stack than trying to implement something completely new into your routine.

For example, if you brush your teeth every night before bed, you can habit stack a new goal on top of that, like saying a Bible verse you are trying to memorize. It forces the habit to stick and not be forgotten.

When we sit down to eat a meal as a family, which is every meal almost every day, we start by praying for our food and then we recite our memory verse. When our verse ends we begin with our meal. We habit stack the scripture memory onto our prayer before each meal.

It forces us to say our verse(s) three times a day. And we can’t eat until it’s said!

Because we do this daily with our toddlers, only 2 and 3 years old, they already have almost 10 large passages of scripture memorized! They can remember the verses so quickly and easily just by being consistent.

Sometimes we add hand motions to our verses to help the kids stay focused on longer passages. You could also make the verse to a tune or song to help too! Just remember to keep it consistent and pick a time to habit stack that best works for your family. It needs to be something you do every day, preferably multiple times a day, for it to work.

Keeping It In Their Minds

We have noticed that after they have one passage of scripture memorized and we move on to the next, they can forget some of the previous passages over time. The way we combat this is by having an additional scripture memory time in the evening during family devotions.

After our family devotions conclude, where we read the Bible and pray together, we then have the kids stand up and say a passage of scripture that we pick at random.

We only give them the Bible reference and then expect them to remember the passage from that. It works so well at keeping every single passage of scripture that they have memorized fresh in their mind. Sometimes we also let them pick which verse or passage they would like to recite to keep it a bit more fun for them.

Once your kids have memorized a verse or passage of scripture, be sure to keep bringing that passage up again over the weeks and years so they don’t forget it. It will stick like glue!

How To Teach Your Kids To Memorize Scripture: Creating Family Culture

I didn’t dive into the “why” behind memorizing scripture. Why is it so important? Why start at such a young age? Can’t they just learn it later at youth group or Christian school? I hope to dive into a blog post on this topic later.

But if you agree with us on the importance of scripture memory, then give habit stacking a try! And also, remember to keep bringing those verses up again throughout the weeks, months, and years ahead.

You are giving your children a gift of eternal knowledge that will stay with them their entire lives. Start as early as possible and stick with it! It creates a family culture and a bond, where our children know the importance of scripture at a young age.

As parents, we find so much joy when we randomly hear our children saying verses in the car or while playing around the house. Or, when they break out in song singing “Jesus Loves Me” or “The Doxology.” Nothing fills our hearts more than to hear our children reciting and singing the truth!

Will you implement these tips to teach your kids to memorize scripture? How will habit stack scripture memory into your day? Let me know in the comments below!

Do you need a good podcast recommendation? Here are some of my favorite podcasts for Christian women as a busy mom! Each podcast offers different topics and discussions, so there is something for everyone.

I love listening to podcasts during my kids’ quiet time in the afternoon or after dinner when I’m washing the dishes and closing up the kitchen. It is so enjoyable, but I also have to remember that as a Christian it is important to only fill my mind with what is true, good, and right (Philippians 4:8).

These are Christian podcasts that I have personally enjoyed over the years and found to align closely to scripture. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean I endorse all opinions or perspectives presented. Some of them I listened to when I was still single or newly married. Now, others that include parenting topics interest me more. But in all seasons, we must use discernment when we listen to an outside voice.

I didn’t include any sermons or Bible apps in this list. However, listening to the Bible in audio form or a sermon series from a trusted pastor can be so beneficial to our spiritual walk, so consider that as an option as well.

Let’s check them out…

I also enjoy and recommend her books, “You Are Not Enough and That’s Ok” and “Toxic Empathy”.

Durenda is one of the podcasts for Christian women that provides loads of wisdom. She is a homeschooling mom and also a grandmother, faithful to her many callings. After reading her books, The Unhurried Homeschooler, and The Four Hour School Day, I knew I had to start listening to her podcast for more wisdom.

She doesn’t only discuss homeschooling, but also homemaking, parenting, and Christian living!

As a Christian mom, I am so thankful the Lord has not left me defenseless against the devil, who attacks me daily! I’ve been studying the Scriptures to put on the armor of God as a mom so that I will not continually fall prey to his schemes.

What is the armor of God? Ephesians 6:10-20 (ESV) says:

The Whole Armor of God

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.” (emphasis added)

The devil especially targets my mind as a mom. It is my desire to be prepared for his attacks! I do that by putting on the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes with the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and sword of the Spirit!

As I study each one of these I want to learn what that looks like for moms in particular. How can I wear each of these items for battle every day as a wife, mother, and homemaker?

Let’s check it out…

How To Put On The Whole Armor Of God As A Mom Today

Don’t forget to Pin this image for later!

  1. The Belt of Truth

Truth is what we are given in the Bible. Therefore, everything else must align with that truth or it is a lie from the devil. And he certainly is the father of lies (John 8:44). The devil is constantly lying to me each day.

These lies include: You’re not loved or desired. Your home is ugly. You’re not doing a good job. You don’t have the latest products. You’re fat. You’re failing your children. You’re not doing enough. The list could go on and on.

If I don’t stop those lies in my head immediately, and take the thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) immediately, then those lies win and I start to believe them as truth.

We put on the whole armor of God as a mom when we first chose to repeat truth to ourselves instead of believing the lies. Instead of the lies going to my head, I listen to: God chose me. He loves me. I am working with excellence for the kingdom of God. I’m not perfect but the Lord helps me. I am worthy and beautiful before Christ. All His promises are true.

  1. The Breastplate of Righteousness

What is righteousness? It is being made right before God! When we recognize our sin, repent of it, turn away from it, and accept God’s gift of salvation we experience His righteousness in exchange for our sin and brokenness!

It is not our good works that save us, but purely the grace of God! God’s righteousness protects us like a breastplate because we are made new in Him. As a mom, we need to make the decision every day to stand confident in the truth that He has made us righteous before Him!

I think the best way for us to do that is to spend time alone with Him. Time alone with God should include reading the Bible, praying, and meditating on His truth. In some seasons of life that looks like getting up before the kids (the ideal) and spending about half an hour to digest it all.

But, in some seasons of motherhood that is nearly impossible. Instead, I use nap time or the evening to connect with my Savior. Whatever season I am in, I need to remind myself of His righteousness by being alone with Him.

  1. Shoes Of The Gospel of Peace

Because Jesus died for us and rose again, we have good news (the gospel)! We put on the whole armor of God as a mom when we are confident in that good news. It brings peace, not only to our lives but also to the lives of others!

When we share the good news with our words and actions to our children, husbands, and friends, we are wearing the shoes of the gospel of peace. That is displayed through the fruit of the Spirit (Galations 5:22-23).

When you are in a heated incident with your child and you choose to show them kindness, you display the gospel and bring peace. When your husband wrongs you and you forgive him, you show him the sacrificial love you also experience from Jesus. And when you turn to Christ when you are overwhelmed and worn thin instead of wine, chocolate, or something else addictive, you choose to display the gospel with self-control!

HOW TO PUT ON THE WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD AS A MOM

Don’t forget to Pin this image for later!

  1. Shield of Faith

Faith is sustaining to the mom facing Satan’s attacks. Because we have been saved through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9) we don’t have to rely on outside things to keep us going.

No amount of diets, binge eating, shopping sprees, sex, social media, awards, etc. can ever sustain us in this spiritual battle! Sure, they make us feel good temporarily. I have been there! But, they never fulfill.

We can have faith and trust God that what He is doing in our lives is for our good (Romans 8)! He is there for us when we need Him the most, we must simply take it to the Lord in prayer! How simple this is yet how so easily I forget.

Another way, besides prayer and Bible reading, that we can keep our shield of faith on is by fellowshipping with other believers and attending church regularly. When we commune with others in the body of Christ our faith is strengthened and we become renewed! Don’t we as busy moms especially need that?

  1. Helmet of Salvation

How can our salvation be our helmet? Well, remember how the enemy attacks our thoughts and minds throughout the day as moms? Our mind is protected by our salvation!

When we choose salvation in Christ we are given a new heart and a new mind. We now live in truth and have the power of the Holy Spirit to keep us from falling prey to lies. We need to continually renew our minds in truth, wearing all of the armor together!

Our salvation also keeps us set apart from the world. When we don’t follow the lies of the culture that the devil promotes, we are transformed (Romans 12:2). We can live in freedom from those lies each day as busy moms! (I’m preaching to myself here!)

  1. The Sword of the Spirit that is The Word Of God

God’s word is our most powerful tool! It gives us our truth, faith, gospel, righteousness, and salvation. Jesus used the Sword of the Spirit when he was in the wilderness being tempted by the devil (Luke 4).

Memorizing scripture is a weapon that cannot be thwarted. Repeat your memory verse throughout the day for the ultimate way to fight the devil. Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

Our confidence comes when we understand that knowing and praying God’s word is powerful! Pray for God to help you get this confidence by establishing a consistent quiet time with Him. Pray for strength to put on the whole armor of God as a mom daily.

We have the tools to fight our battles! It will build our faith and our family’s as well! Let me know in the comments below, how will you put on the whole armor of God as a mom today?

My husband laughed at me the other day when I came home from the library again with more books than I could carry (a lot of which are on this top books of 2024 list). He asked how I even knew so many books existed, let alone wanted to read them all, and we laughed.

Yes, I’ve read a lot of (mainly nonfiction) books this year! So, I thought I would compile a list and share some of my favorites with you if you were looking for some good reads. Plus, if you have any book recommendations you think I would like, please leave a comment and share them with me and all of us!

Here are my top books of 2024…

  1. The 4-Hour School Day by Durenda Wilson (April 2024)

I started keeping a record of my top books of 2024 in April, but I wish I had started at the start of the year because I know I read some good ones, I just can’t quite remember all of them!

I’ve really enjoyed listening to this author’s podcast and reading her books. They are so encouraging to the homeschool mom, which I plan to be very soon! This book talks about what we really need in education – an unhurried approach in the loving and safe environment of the home! (I also love her book The Unhurried Homeschooler)

The reason I enjoyed it so much this year was because it reminded me to slow down and enjoy these years with my children. I am educating my children for life, and skills that can’t be measured on a standardized test. I love her analogy of the greenhouse effect and it is something I will remind myself of for years to come.

My goals in these early years of home education (if you can even call it that yet as my oldest is almost 4) are: providing a simple, consistent routine; inviting my children to do my daily activities with me; slowing down to allow them the chance to ask questions; and creating the life I want to have each day with my children by setting the example.

  1. The Real Simple Method to Organizing Every Room: And How To Keep It That Way by The Editors of Real Simple (May 2024)

I really enjoyed the tips of this book and how it is laid out. As I consider moving into our new house later this year, and I already know the basic information on decluttering, I want to focus on organizing the new house well.

I love that this book has information on not just organizing but maintaining it and finding creative solutions for small spaces. There are also lots of tips on keeping the space clean and inviting. The pictures are so helpful and relatable. I’ll have to read it again for reminders once we officially move in.

  1. Far Beyond Gold: Running from Fear to Faith by Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (July 2024)

This book was encouraging to read as not many people in the spotlight choose to follow Christ, and do it genuinely! When I saw an interview of Sydney sharing about her book before the Olympics began I knew I had to read it.

I was skeptical reading it, I’ll be honest. Many people claim the name of “Christian” these days without actually making God and the Bible the true authorities of their lives. After reading her book I can tell that Sydney is someone who truly pursues Christ each day!

It was fun to read about her love story with her husband and how he played a vital role in sharing the gospel with her. Sydney used to be crippled by fear and anxiety when she faced competition on the track, but now she gives it all back to the Lord and runs for His glory!

It’s a book I will continue to recommend, especially to other athletes, as it shares how we can fully trust God and give Him our lives completely!

  1. 8 Errors Parents Make and How to Avoid Them by Michael Brock (July 2024 – Top Books of 2024)

A podcast I enjoy listening to recommended this book and so I decided to check it out. It was actually a really great book because it combined so many parenting philosophies that I have heard over the years from family and other authors. I found it helpful to have someone put all that information together in one book after pulling the concepts and ideas from other people (that are all based on Biblical principles.)

It helped me recognize some areas where we are weak in our parenting and strive to correct those. I appreciated the honest, brutal truths from Scripture and also very tangible ways to implement those each day. It’s a book that is staying on our bookshelf!

  1. Until the Streetlights Come On: How a Return to Play Brightens Our Present and Prepares Kids for an Uncertain Future by Ginny Yurich (August 2024)

I loved reading this book because it was such a wonderful reminder to me of what truly matters concerning the education of my children: outdoor play and boredom for creativity! I desire a slow-paced life and yet I still compare myself to other moms. They are teaching their children to read already or ordering curriculum before they are ready. Instead, I want to enjoy these little years and let learning come naturally!

We build our family culture, and a slow-paced life is something that needs to be fought for in today’s world. I am choosing to be intentional with these things thanks to the encouragement of this book! I highly recommend it to all other moms.

  1. Swimming Against the Current: Fighting for Common Sense in a World That’s Lost its Mind by Riley Gaines (August 2024 – Top Books of 2024)

I was so excited when I saw this book on the “New Books” shelf at my library! I know Riley’s story and have heard her on several podcasts, but I didn’t know all the details that she shared in this book.

I am so proud of everything she is advocating for, all the research she included, and all the details regarding the harm of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports. It was a great reminder for me, that while I may not be facing the same hate she is currently facing, times are changing, and normal, everyday persecution of Christians is coming quickly!

  1. House Rules: How to Decorate for Every Home, Style, and Budget by Myquillyn Smith (August 2024)

With the excitement of having a brand-new house to decorate and enjoy this year, I have read so many home design books. Some of them just seem unrealistic for a homesteading mom of young children or the design tips are hard to implement in our very cabin-esque house.

This book was by far my favorite to read and actually apply the principles! Some of my favorite tips are “combine the opposites” where she shares that to live in a rustic cabin without it feeling like Cracker Barrel, add in some shiny, modern, reflective, and light pieces to intentionally balance it all out. Also “respect your boss” (which would be our wood walls, floors, and ceiling interior) and “pattern fills a room.” This is where I will need to focus on neutralizing the room instead of adding more pattern because of the cabin-style and large amount of wood elements.

I also shared about this book in this blog post!

  1. Really Very Crunchy: A Beginner’s Guide to Removing Toxins from Your Life without Adding Them to Your Personality by Emily Morrow (August 2024)

This book was so fun and cute to read, especially since I have seen the author’s comical Instagram reels! While the information on toxins was very beginner-level and nothing new to me, it was fun to read about her experiences with how we interact with others when it comes to these things.

I appreciated her take on being kind, not judgmental, and yet still providing information where necessary when in conversation. It was a unique take on the growing trend of being toxic-free and provided a great perspective on not making it your idol or dumping your opinions on others.

  1. The 100 Most Asked Questions about God and the Bible: Scripture’s Answers on Sin, Salvation, Sexuality, End Times, Heaven, & More by S. Michael Houdmann (August 2024)

I have enjoyed reading different Biblical arguments and information on GotQuestions.org over the years. When I saw that they compiled some of those questions into a book I was excited to read it!

I’d have to say the most impactful questions for me were “What is the difference between sheol, hades, hell, the lake of fire, paradise, and Abraham’s bosom?”, “Did Jesus go to hell between His death and resurrection?” and “What happens after death?”. I had never considered these differences in places and that there is actually more than just heaven and hell but also a “sheol.”

Also, the section about end times was so helpful and a great reminder of things that are often difficult to understand.

  1. The Opt-Out Family: How to Give Your Kids What Technology Can’t by Erin Loechner (September 2024 – Top Books of 2024)

What a beautiful book on reminding parents that we need to know our children better than the algorithm does! That we have the power to opt out of this technology-deep world and choose real-world experiences every day!

A few months ago I got off of social media. Then after listening to a podcast interview with this author, it pushed me to completely delete all my social media accounts, and wow how liberating it was! I knew I wanted to read her book right away to stay firm in being an opt-out family!

I loved her constant reminders of how real-world things truly make the impacts we need in our families – a shoulder squeeze, eye contact, boredom for creativity. That’s why it’s one of my top books of 2024. How refreshing life is when we are invested in it fully and completely!

  1. Raising Amazing: Bringing Up Kids Who Love God, Like Their Family, and Do the Dishes without Being Asked by Monica Swanson (October 2024)

This book was so solid! It reminded me of all the important things to focus on each day, especially when it comes to parenting. That includes keeping God first, our marriage a priority, and raising our children to have good character.

But beyond that, it was helpful practically. I was reminded to do things like allowing natural consequences (and giving consequences) to teach our children life lessons. Also, keeping watch over the influences on our children, being able to say no, letting our children face adversity, and preparing them for spiritual battles were some more good reminders. I appreciated the perspective of the dad and one of their sons at the end of each chapter. I have also enjoyed the other books by this author: Boy Mom, Becoming Homeschoolers, and all of her resources!

  1. The Mountain Rose Herbs Book of Natural Body Care: 68 Simple Recipes for Health and Beauty by Shawn Donnille (November 2024)

I love purchasing from this company so when I saw that this book came out I was excited to read it! The recipes in it that I especially loved were the Chamomile Rose Hair Rinse, Foot Mask, and Menthol Vapor Chest Rub. But I also enjoyed the first few chapters where they go into detail on ingredients and how to properly DIY herbs.

  1. Revolutionary Parenting: Raising Your Kids To Become Spiritual Champions, What the Research Shows Really Works by George Barna (November 2024)

I have to say I think this might be my favorite parenting book to date, which really surprised me. It’s not a book you quickly hear recommended or see on book lists. Yet, I think, as the author describes, that the research behind this book really does make it stand out from all the others. The author doesn’t give a formula to follow (because there isn’t one) and instead gives key things to consider, or pieces to the puzzle, that you want to make sure you aren’t missing.

Parenting is all about relationships – our relationship with God, our spouse, and with our kids. These each have to be real, intentional, authentic, and based on love and trust. From that comes setting rules at the right pace and consistent discipline, distinct to each child. You are modeling everything for your children!

  1. Healing Mushrooms: A Practical and Culinary Guide to Using Mushrooms for Whole Body Health by Tero Isokauppila (November 2024)

I really enjoyed learning all about the amazing benefits of mushrooms! Especially the top 10 mushrooms that this book focuses on – reishi, chaga, cordyceps, lion’s mane, shiitake, maitake, turkey tail, enoki, oyster mushroom, and tremella. And next, I’m excited to try some of the recipes in this book to incorporate them into our meals more often!

  1. Triggers: Exchanging Parents’ Angry Reactions for Gentle Biblical Responses by Amber Lia and Wendy Speake (December 2024)

I have been journaling through this book and it has really helped me with the anger/mom rage that I have experienced lately. It goes through many practical things that affect us as moms, and how we can respond Biblically in each one of them. This is a book I will be purchasing and keeping on my bookshelf for years to come!

I wasn’t sure if I’d finish this book before publishing my top books of 2024, or even if I’d want to include it in my list of top books of 2024, so I was glad to finish it just before the new year!

I think I truly first realized how different men are than women when I got married. But, now that I have a son who is toddler age I feel the need even more to read Christian books on raising boys. Their minds are so different than girls!

And how beautiful that is! I want to do a great job raising my son to be the man that God created him to be. Of course, that begins with prayer and meditating on Scripture. But, it also comes from reading new research and information that comes out on the brains of boys.

I also enjoy hearing from other moms and their experiences. While boys all have different personalities and preferences, some qualities are undeniable to who God made them to be. These Christian books on raising boys have helped me discover that even more so!

Let’s check them out…

  1. Raising Boys to Men: A Simple, Mercifully Short Book on Raising and Homeschooling Boys by Durenda Wilson

I love Durenda Wilson because she shares so much wonderful wisdom on motherhood, parenting, and homeschooling in her books and on her podcast! This book is no exception. It is simple and straight to the point on everything you need to know about raising boys to men that love and serve God with their whole heart.

As moms, we feel lost when it comes to little boys’ minds simply because we have never been little boys ourselves. God made them to climb, build, wrestle, and take risks all day long. It’s scary, intimidating, and upsetting at times yet with the Lord’s help we can raise them to live into their boy-ness with love and respect!

  1. The Minds of Boys: Saving Our Sons from Falling Behind in School and Life by Michael Gurian

This is not a Christian book, and it focuses on regular schooling, not homeschooling, yet I had to include it on this list. It was so fascinating to read about how different boys’ minds are from girls. It also encouraged me even more in the decision to homeschool our son in particular (and the author agrees that boys benefit greatly from homeschooling).

The school system is set up in favor of female minds. The statistics in the book prove it quite easily. Plus, boys need an environment where they can wrestle, move, tinker, take risks, and explore. They learn through doing! This book provides so many ways for parents to help children, despite their schooling environment.

The book also covers our current crisis (which has only gotten worse since the book was published): how boys learn, how you can teach boys better throughout each stage of life, motivating boys to learn, and so much more. While this book is becoming dated now, the information is still so relevant and extremely important to understand!

  1. Strong Mothers, Strong Sons: Lessons Mothers Need to Raise Extraordinary Men by Meg Meeker

This book taught me so much about boys and why they do what they do! It covers all the necessary topics from emotions, sex, attacking you, being there while also letting go, and so much more.

I also appreciate that faith and how laying a solid Christian groundwork can make the biggest difference in a boy’s life was discussed in a whole chapter. My husband can attest to this himself. His testimony shares how when he went astray in his teen years, having Bible verses and songs memorized helped him return back to the truth he was grounded in.

An impactful line from the book for me was on page 16, “As we think of ways to express affection, it is helpful to remember that while women bond through verbal communication, boys bond to others by doing things with them.” I never knew that focusing on quality time could impact the relationship I have with my son so much!

  1. Boys Should Be Boys: 7 Secrets to Raising Healthy Sons by Meg Meeker

Here is another book by Meg Meeker that dives deeper into the topic of boys. The seven secrets are: encourage your son, understand his needs, recognize he was made for the outdoors, he needs rules, he needs virtue, teach him the big questions of life, and remember that you are the most important person in his life.

These topics are explored in great depth. I appreciate the author covering topics of all ages and sensitive topics like pornography and religion. At the end of the book, there are Ten Tips For Making Sure You Get It Right.

These tips are genuine and deep. It’s about setting the example, being willing to encourage their masculinity and discipline them correctly, teaching them to serve and helping them find their purpose. Our boys need us, and while the role isn’t easy, it’s worth it!

  1. Bringing Up Boys: Practical Advice and Encouragement for Those Shaping the Next Generation of Men by James C. Dobson

This was such a fun book to read! It made me laugh so often reading about all the silly things boys do, yet it also changed how I view boys. I give them more grace in some areas because I understand their point of view better. (“They value change, opportunity, risk, speculation, and adventure.” Pg. 27)

However, we should also demand excellence from them in other areas. The author discusses the differences between boys and girls, the harm surrounding boys today, the need for a father, the role of a mother, busyness and isolation, homosexuality, single parents and grandparents, competition, feminism and heroism, school, predators, staying close, discipline, and more!

There is also an amazing question-and-answer section at the end of each chapter that goes into detail on some hard topics, making this one of the best Christian books on raising boys! Plus, it all comes from a genuine Biblical perspective with Bible verses and topics to point you back to what truly matters.

As a Christian, I view Lent as a time to renew my mind from distractions, slow down, and refocus on the values of the kingdom of God. One way to help with that, alongside reading the Bible, is to read Lent books for Christians.

While many people use Lent as a time to give something up or give to those in need, it’s not about what we do but what changes in our hearts. Jesus came to overcome our sin and conquer death on the cross! He rose again and now reigns again in glory! That changes everything.

To refocus your heart this Lent season and remember Christ’s true love and forgiveness, spend some time reading His word and one of these Lent books for Christians. They have been an encouragement for me and valuable resources!

Here’s some to get you started…

5 Lent Books For Christians To Read And Meditate On Before Easter

  1. Behold the King of Glory: A Narrative of the Life, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ by Russ Ramsey

This is an amazing book to read through the Lent season, as there are 40 chapters, one for each day. Each chapter is short and simple yet portrays the key events of Jesus’ time on earth as the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John recount.

I appreciate the heart-probing questions that encourage me to think of the scripture passages in ways I had never considered before. What was this character feeling during this time? How does Jesus communicate to the culture back then? I also appreciate seeing how all the gospels work together to tell the greatest story ever told!

The chapters each give a Bible passage to read first and then the narrative to follow. Always read the scripture passage first to understand where the author may be taking some liberties, as mentioned in the preface.

You may also want to check out The Passion of the King of Glory (Retelling the Story Series) by the same author as another option for lent books for Christians. These books are a wonderful way to prepare your heart for Easter as you recount the life, death, and resurrection of our Savior!

  1. Bread and Wine: Readings for Lent and Easter by Various Authors

This is a book put together by editors who ordered various Lent and Easter teachings from leaders of the faith. The sections are based on the themes of Invitation, Temptation, Passion, Crucifixion, Resurrection, and New Life. The days are undated so you can read it again year after year.

Some of my favorites to read in the book are from Amy Carmichael, C.S. Lewis, Oswald Chambers, and Martin Luther. Your heart will be moved and transformed after you read each of these snippets from the various authors in the Lent season.

This is a powerful book and a wonderful resource to turn to for more to meditate on leading up to Easter.

  1. Word in the Wilderness: A poem a day for Lent and Easter by Malcolm Guite

I am typically not someone who reads poetry, especially when it comes to Bible study and meditation. But reading this book reminded me of how helpful poetry can be in slowing down and savoring what I am learning!

The introduction of this book clarifies the journey the author takes you on as you dive into the Lent season. You will understand why Lent is ordered the way it is and how it can change your heart if you allow it to! After each poem is a few pages of reflection and reminders of prayer and meditation for your day.

  1. It Is Finished: A 40-Day Pilgrimage Back to the Cross by Charles Martin

This book truly takes you a on journey. It includes lots of descriptive words to make you feel like you are there with the others watching Jesus on the cross. You will be reminded of so many wonderful Biblical events and the meaning behind all of them as you read this book during Lent.

The forty days are divided into four parts. Part 1 is “The Origin Story of What Jesus Finished At The Cross”, Part 2 is “Why Blood Was The Only Way To Settle Our Debt”, Part 3 is “But Why Jesus’ Blood?” and Part 4 is “What Was Exchanged At The Cross?”.

This book is unique in that it writes out the scripture for you in red text. Each day has a scripture passage with a few pages of reflection, including a part titled “Walk With Me Back To The Cross.” Then “Pray With Me” and a prayer follows. Lastly, it closes with a “And God Responds” section with more scripture.

It is one of the Lent books that reference the whole Bible as you specifically study the death of Jesus. The author does not shy away from hard topics and the great depth of the topic at hand.

BEST LENT BOOKS FOR CHRISTIANS

  1. Preparing for Easter by C. S. Lewis

This book is small but powerful. This collection of works by C.S. Lewis is perfect for Christians to read as they prepare for Easter as it reflects on Jesus as a whole! It is comprised of 50 devotional readings, only a page or two long.

Each reading follows the Lent calendar, with the first starting on Ash Wednesday and the last being Easter Sunday. The table of contents makes it very easy to follow the calendar days for that year. Each day has scripture readings before the excerpt from C.S. Lewis, with a note of where the excerpt came from.

I appreciate how well thought out this book is and that it is completely C.S. Lewis’ works without any other commentary. It is a wonderful book to read each Easter season to dwell deeply on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus!

I’m certainly not a perfect wife and have hurt my husband with my words and actions at times. So, as a reminder to myself, and hopefully to you as well, I’ve made a list of things wives can do to serve their husbands better!

As selfish human beings, we desire people to serve us. However, God calls us to be humble and selfless every day. That involves being servant-hearted towards our family members and looking to their needs before our own.and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:44-45)

When we look for ways to serve others it brings love, joy, and fulfillment in Christ. Often it’s the little things that add up to make a big difference. If you are struggling in your marriage or have experienced pain from your husband, I would encourage you to first look at yourself. What small things can you do each day to honor and serve him?

This list of things wives can do to serve their husbands better is not complete. I could probably think of 100 more things! As you go through your day be intentional about showing your husband respect, meeting his needs, and maintaining a humble heart. Look for more opportunities beyond this list.

The small actions, words of encouragement, and the right heart posture are what make the biggest difference to your husband and your marriage! God brought you both together, and with hard work, God will change your heart as you serve Him by serving your husband! We’ve enjoyed these books, and this devotional as we continue to grow in our marriage.

Let’s check out the things wives can do to serve their husbands better…

The longer I am a mom the more I recognize my helplessness. In almost every tricky and difficult situation I finally end up with the conclusion “Well, all I can do is pray and leave it in the Lord’s hands.” These books on prayer for the Christian mom have helped me learn to pray through that helplessness.

I must continually open my hands from what I am trying to control and pass it off into God’s hands. I do that through continual prayer. How scary, yet how freeing it is!

I’ve learned that it’s not my own will, discipline, and motivation that keeps me praying. It’s my recognition of a need for a Savior and His help every moment of every day. “I need You oh I need You, Every hour I need you…” as the hymn goes.

Prayer is a personal relationship and a tool that every single mom needs in their life. We can’t protect our children, teach them everything, and nurture them as we want to without the Lord’s. These books are reminders of praying through all of life’s situations. They are books on prayer for the Christian mom to turn to throughout her whole motherhood journey!

  1. A Praying Life: Connecting with God in a Distracting World by Paul E. Miller

Do you find yourself only praying when things aren’t going your way, or taking a turn for the worst? I know I have at times. Prayer is our relationship with God and prayer out of convenience is not how a relationship works. This book is for those with a prayerless life like this.

This book is divided into these sections: praying like a child, learning to trust again, learning to ask your Father, living in your Father’s story, and praying in real life. It touches on both the spiritual and emotional aspects of prayer while giving practical guidance in forming this new habit.

A praying life is a lot of things, including being integrated throughout all of the day and part of a grander story. Prayer is a simple and real honest conversation, intentionally building a personal relationship with God, and acknowledging our need for Him and trust in Him.

  1. Praying Together: The Priority and Privilege of Prayer in Our Homes, Communities, and Churches by Megan Hill

Why should we pray together with others? Why does God want us to pray together? And how do we do it well? This book unpacks these three things, being educational, motivational, and practical!

While reading this book I loved exploring how relational our prayer is, as there is always more than one party involved – us and God plus others. As moms, we can encourage others to pray with us as we form new habits!

The examples of the times in the Bible when prayer was used and furthered God’s kingdom were incredible to read about. I never understood the different categories of prayer throughout the Bible before reading this book. Plus, this book encouraged me to create a culture of prayer in my home!

  1. Praying the Bible by Donald S. Whitney

This was a fantastic read and revitalized my prayer life! The author understands the exact pain points and frustrations you have around prayer. For me, it was a lack of creativity and feeling like I was repeating myself constantly.

He encourages you to read a Psalm a day and pray line-by-line, but be sure to read this quick and short book first so you understand the method fully first! Then you can dive into reading other parts of the Bible as well. I even purchased this book to help me form the habit more quickly and my husband joined in with me!

  1. Sing a New Song: A Woman’s Guide to the Psalms by Lydia Brownback

Just as with Praying the Bible, this book also made me want to dive deep into praying through the Psalms. I love how the book is laid out – each Psalm has a title and these headings: theme (one-sentence overview), harmony (nature of the Psalm), singing in tune (verse-by-verse breakdown), musical notes (how it reveals God), and sing the song (application).

After reading this book it became something I had to have as part of my daily quiet time. I enjoy reading the Psalm, praying through it, and then reading from this book to guide my application of the Psalm. It is wonderful for busy moms to get back into prayer!

This would be wonderful to use in a group Bible study setting as well. The appendixes help you get started and dive even deeper.

  1. Prayer: Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God by Timothy Keller

Do you feel completely lost when it comes to prayer? This is an all-encompassing book on why we pray, how to pray, the power of prayer, and making a habit of prayer. It includes deep looks at Martin Luther’s “A Simple Way to Pray,” the Lord’s Prayer, and breaking down key aspects of prayer.

Prayer is not simply making requests to God. It is so much deeper and richer than that and it changes us the more we participate in it. I enjoyed the patterns of daily prayer in the appendix as well.

You may also want to read The Songs of Jesus: A Year of Daily Devotions in the Psalms by Tim Keller and Kathy Keller. It is a daily devotional style to share what they have learned through the Psalms, the book of the Bible that most often guides my prayers.

  1. The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers & Devotions by Arthur Bennett

I want to use this book in the future when I am homeschooling my children. I think it would be a great book to read one prayer from together each day. The Puritans’ prayers are so powerful and deep, that I think our whole family would benefit from hearing them.

This book divides these Puritan prayers up into sections: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; redemption and reconciliation; penitence and deprecation; needs and devotions; holy aspirations; approach to God; gifts of grace; service and ministry; valediction; and a week’s shared prayers. It is incredible to see how deeply rooted in prayer the Puritans were!

As a young mom, this is one of the books on prayer for the Christian mom, that I can easily turn to and read a prayer out loud when I am struggling to find the words or need some guidance!

  1. Praying for Your Husband from Head to Toe: A Daily Guide to Scripture-Based Prayer by Sharon Jaynes

I love this book! As a Christian wife and mom, I know the best thing I can do for my husband is pray for him (despite my sinful desire to nag him instead). This book makes praying for him easy, no matter how busy I am!

The prayers are so deep and practical, that I truly feel my heart softening as I pray each one. Plus, I appreciate the length of the prayers and how they are laid out.

The first part of the book covers all the parts of the body you will be praying for each day: his mind (what he thinks), his eyes (what he looks at), his ears (what he listens to), his mouth (his words), his neck (his decisions), his shoulders (his burdens), his back (his protection), his arms (his strength), his hands (his work), his ring finger (his marriage), his side (his relationships), his sexuality (his physical intimacy), his legs (stand on truth), his knees (his relationship with God), and his feet (his walk with God).

The second part of the book is 30 days of prayers. Each day has all of these parts of the body to pray for! And each day there is a Bible verse to go with each part. Plus, the appendix has additional prayers that are so helpful: praying for his salvation, his fatherhood, and his healing. There is also a similar book for praying for your children!

How do you limit distractions as a mom? The answer is simple, yet has a tremendous impact. It is to get rid of your social media accounts!

Now, before you stop reading, either because you’ve heard that before, you don’t want to, or you feel like you can’t, try thinking about how many distractions social media has caused you just today alone.

You see I was that same person, I didn’t think I needed to give up social media, I didn’t want to, and I didn’t realize how badly I needed to! That was until one day I finally realized how distracted it made me, even with limits and boundaries.

Social media is intended to suck us in and it works. It causes us to be disconnected from those around us and only leaves us feeling gross about ourselves after. The temporary fix or high it brings us is ultimately not satisfying or fulfilling. I know you’ve experienced it before!

I’ve been without social media for several months now and the positive impact on my life is too great not to share! You can be a more present mom when you get off social media today!

Let’s discuss it further…

Our Children Deserve (And Need) A Present Mom

My oldest had just turned three and kept asking me what I was doing on my phone. While I was limiting my social media time, especially when she was awake, I still found myself being distracted by it during the day.

Honestly, one day I just didn’t want to tell her I was on Instagram and then have her ask what that was. She didn’t need to know.

I knew that I wasn’t feeding my soul and I could be a better example for her. I kept her away from screens, why didn’t I have the self-control to do the same? That conviction is what caused me to delete social media that night.

My children constantly need me to be present and alert to them. Yes, other things distract me during the day like a text message, a crying baby, or the dinner cooking on the stove, but they don’t completely shift my attention as social media does.

Social media would suck me in, always feeling the need for more, as it’s designed to do. Not to mention how the advertisements were affecting my thoughts throughout the day. I was constantly thinking about what I needed to consume next instead of being grateful for the blessing right in front of me.

What About The Smartphone?

Some people have chosen an even more direct approach and eliminated their smartphones. I considered this approach but ultimately decided against it.

I still desire apps like my bank account, grocery pickup, marco polo messaging, and my email on my phone. Plus, the maps app and camera feature are just too convenient. They are things I enjoy accessing weekly and don’t find them a hindrance to my daily life with my family.

But, if you find that you need even more time away from your phone, consider switching over to an old-school flip phone. It will certainly be a learning curve and frustrating at times, but not impossible.

How It’s Possible

I can’t tell you how much relief I have experienced since being on social media. And, I truly had no idea until committing to eliminating it indefinitely. I’ve done several social media detoxes in the past, but always with the intention of returning.

This time I had no intention and I’m not sure I will ever return. My accounts are still active and I use Newsfeed Eradicator to access them if need be without seeing anything on my feed. Some local events, FB marketplace, and specific business-related messages are important for our homestead. I’m glad I can still access them on a computer nearby without ever being tempted to scroll again!

I never keep any social media apps on my phone and use the Minimalist Phone to keep me off my phone even less.

However, I would encourage you to delete the accounts permanently if you never plan on using these things and do not need access to them. My alternative has been to sign up for newsletters from companies I previously kept up with on social media. I also make more effort to text and call friends and family for updates now!

The Benefits Are Amazing

When I limit distractions as a mom I experience so much joy. I have more time to stay present with my children and husband, but I also have more time to be in God’s word. Ultimately, those relationships are all that matter in this world, so why wouldn’t I give them my full attention?

The first month was the hardest when it came to breaking habits. But now I realize I have no anxious feeling about checking in on Instagram or seeing what that notification is on Facebook. (I’ve never used TikTok and use YouTube occasionally as it is where I prefer to listen to podcasts.)

I truly feel like I am soaking in each day with my family, leaning into everything my kids are experiencing, and believe without a doubt that I will never regret not being fully present in their childhood and missing out on something.

It’s hard for me to put into words the blessing it has been to be without social media which is why I can only encourage you to experience it for yourself. I choose to lean into the hard instead, not avoid it or push my child away. I choose to keep my priorities in line with this boundary.
