Are you interested in homesteading but just not quite sure where to start? These homesteading books for beginners are a perfect gateway to a more self-sufficient and purposeful life!

Each of these books covers topics like gardening, animal husbandry, preserving food, cooking from scratch, old-fashioned skills, and forgotten hobbies that our grandparents used to do daily! But the difference is that these are not overwhelming and easily approachable.

The biggest challenge many people face with these topics is that they don’t know where to start, or they are afraid of making the time and money investment, yet failing in the end. Read these books first to gain the confidence and knowledge you need before diving in! Then, don’t be afraid to just go for it!

I understand, as someone new to homesteading myself. My husband and I both grew up without these homesteading skills and had to learn them one step at a time. And we are still learning! There have been plenty of mistakes and failures, yet we wouldn’t change this lifestyle for anything. It is so rewarding and worth it!

Let’s check them out…

  1. Old-Fashioned On Purpose: A Homesteading Manifesto―Rediscovering Simplicity and Meaning Through the Lost Arts of the Past such as Gardening, Canning and More by Jill Winger

One reason I chose the name “GoodPointGrandma” for my blog was that I loved returning to the skills of our grandmothers. I was also nicknamed “grandma” by my college friends because of this old-fashioned thinking!

I was traditional, and I loved it. And I loved reading this book because it was so relatable! The first few chapters are all about returning to those old-fashioned roots so many of us crave (yet we think we are the only ones sometimes!).

The rest of the book is practical action steps to take on your homesteading journey, no matter who you are and where you live! I loved that the author touched on topics like letting children play and take risks, learning how to be outside in a sedentary indoor world, and learning how to be in a rural community when barn-raising parties aren’t necessary anymore.

At the end of each chapter, you will be given lots of action points on how you can start implementing some of these things today!

  1. The Hands-On Ranch Book: How to Tie a Knot, Start a Garden, Saddle a Horse, and Everything Else People Used to Know How to Do by Mary Heffernan

I included this book because it discusses all the skills we need to return to when we are starting our homesteading journey! It’s one of the best homesteading books for beginners because it reminds you of the simple tasks you can do yourself for more self-sufficiency.

Plus, it walks you through how to do each one in a simple and easy way to understand. If jumping into homesteading feels overwhelming, or you feel like you aren’t at the level you should be at, start with this book. It starts simple and lays the foundation. It reminds you to start with small tasks first, feel the reward for your labor, and then jump into the bigger tasks!

  1. Ultimate Guide to Hobby Farm Animals: Raising Beef Cattle, Chickens, Ducks, Goats, Pigs, Rabbits, and Sheep – Everything a Hobby Farmer Needs to Know for Small-Scale Farming by Sue Weaver, Chris McLaughlin, Cherie Langlois, Ann Larkin Hanse, and Arie McFarlen

This is the updated and revised version of the original book I first read, so I’m sure it has even more fantastic information than I saw! As someone who raises all our meat (meat rabbits, meat chickens, and eggs), plus fishing and hunting, I love the fact that this book includes all sorts of animals to raise.

We hope to expand to sheep and pigs soon on our homestead, but it was also fascinating to read about beef cattle, ducks, and goats. This is a large book, but very digestible. Different authors share on each animal of their expertise.

Each chapter contains everything you would want to know about that specific animal before getting started. It isn’t information overload, and the pictures and bullet points make it easy to read! I’m loving it as one of the best homesteading books for beginners because of all the pig and sheep information to get me acquainted before we dive in ourselves.

This is one of the homesteading books for beginners that I wish I had had my hands on years ago! We can become so tunnel visioned with our homestead projects and goals that we forget that little projects that welcome in wildlife make a huge difference!

If you are homesteading with your family, this is a great book to keep on your shelf for projects to do together throughout the seasons. From building bat houses to bird feeders and amphibian houses, these family projects are a must-do on the homestead!

Interested in teaching your kids science? Just open up this book! You will learn all about native plants, pollinators, wildlife, and how it all affects your homestead property. As beginners, we should start by studying the microclimate, animals, and plants all around us first. This will open up a whole world of foraging and cultivating, and make our lives easier in the future!

  1. The Children’s Heritage Sourcebook: 100+ Back-to-Roots Activities for Kids & Teens by Ashley Moore, Lauren Malloy, and Emma Rollin Moore

After I read The Women’s Heritage Sourcebook: Bringing Homesteading to Everyday Life and enjoyed it, I knew I would have to check out this book next. In fact, I first recommend the book in this blog post.

Even if you don’t have children in your life currently, you will gain lots of beginner-level information by flipping through this book and reading it. It has information on animals to raise, recipes to try, and skincare creations to make! Plus, it is beautiful.

It gave me lots of ideas as a beginner homesteader to try that were not too overwhelming or over my head. And, I love that I can take my children along with me as I do the projects and try the recipes. Books like these also help you narrow down what you are truly interested in before getting a deeper book on that subject.

I’ve been reading Melissa’s book and listening to her podcast for years now because she is a wealth of knowledge and a wonderful teacher. This book is a great one to start with if you are just tapping into the homesteading culture!

I love that this book covers all topics on things that you can make yourself, saving you time and money. But, most importantly, making you a bit more self-sufficient. The key is not to worry about failing and just try each one!

Begin with her tips on growing your own food, preserving it, and cooking with it. Then, try your hand at making your own cleaning products and raising your own animals! Her charts are especially helpful in making everything so easy to start. If you’re like me and didn’t grow up learning these basic skills, then this book is a perfect teacher to get started with.

  1. The Backyard Homestead Complete Guide: Practical Solutions for Growing Food, Raising Animals, and Building a Self-Reliant Lifestyle — Perfect for Small Yards, Tight Budgets, and Busy Schedules by Henry Campbell

While there are lots of books on backyard homesteading, this one is a great option because it applies to all of us trying to squeeze homesteading into our already busy lives. As a mom of (almost) four children, four years old and under, there is so much I would like to do with homesteading, yet I am faced with my limits every day.

Family needs to come first. And other priorities often sweep in, making it difficult to have a large garden, several animals, and time to preserve produce. That’s where this book comes in for beginner homesteaders!

It covers all the homesteading topics but gives you practical steps on how to fit into your life and your budget, too! I especially appreciate the time-saving hacks. It’s a book you can turn to over and over again as you start to try out a new category of homesteading.

Do you need a good podcast recommendation? Here are some of my favorite podcasts for Christian women as a busy mom! Each podcast offers different topics and discussions, so there is something for everyone.

I love listening to podcasts during my kids’ quiet time in the afternoon or after dinner when I’m washing the dishes and closing up the kitchen. It is so enjoyable, but I also have to remember that as a Christian it is important to only fill my mind with what is true, good, and right (Philippians 4:8).

These are Christian podcasts that I have personally enjoyed over the years and found to align closely to scripture. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean I endorse all opinions or perspectives presented. Some of them I listened to when I was still single or newly married. Now, others that include parenting topics interest me more. But in all seasons, we must use discernment when we listen to an outside voice.

I didn’t include any sermons or Bible apps in this list. However, listening to the Bible in audio form or a sermon series from a trusted pastor can be so beneficial to our spiritual walk, so consider that as an option as well.

Let’s check them out…

  1. Relatable with Allie Beth Stuckey

I had to include Allie’s podcast first on my list because it is currently the one I most enjoy and listen to most regularly. I love that Allie covers all sorts of topics involving culture and politics. And, I love that she comes to it with a Christian perspective. I feel equipped to answer some hard questions in life after listening to her or her guests.

I also enjoy and recommend her books, “You Are Not Enough and That’s Ok” and “Toxic Empathy”.

  1. The Durenda Wilson Podcast

Durenda is one of the podcasts for Christian women that provides loads of wisdom. She is a homeschooling mom and also a grandmother, faithful to her many callings. After reading her books, The Unhurried Homeschooler, and The Four Hour School Day, I knew I had to start listening to her podcast for more wisdom.

She doesn’t only discuss homeschooling, but also homemaking, parenting, and Christian living!

  1. Now That We’re A Family with Katie and Elisha Voetberg

I have to admit that sometimes I get annoyed with this podcast due to simply the way they communicate and have stepped away from it for a season in the past. However, I love Katie and Elisha’s ministry and vision for sharing the love of family and encouraging other families towards Christ! They talk about all sorts of topics related to the Christian family. These also offer unique perspectives on large families, as they both come from families with 10 and 11 kids.

  1. Culture Apothecary with Alex Clark

I’ve been listening to Alex’s podcast since the beginning. Now that it has rebranded, I still love it and the mission! Alex interviews two guests every week to share how to heal a sick culture, whether physical, mental, or spiritual. I have learned so much about health and wellness just from listening to these guests, that sometimes it’s hard to keep up with!

I love that she keeps me informed and focuses on our whole body! Alex is a Christian and while she lets her guests share their perspective, she is selective on who she has on the show and shares her perspectives as well.

I have enjoyed their books a great deal, including Risen Motherhood and Gospel Mom.

  1. The Daily Grace Podcast

I have done several of the Daily Grace Co yearly reading plans and loved them. They help me stay in the word each day of the year. It is especially helpful to have the podcast to listen to as well to summarize and explain a bit more of what I have read! You have to specifically search for the podcast dedicated to that reading plan, but there are other sections to their podcast as well that cover all sorts of topics!

My husband laughed at me the other day when I came home from the library again with more books than I could carry (a lot of which are on this top books of 2024 list). He asked how I even knew so many books existed, let alone wanted to read them all, and we laughed.

Yes, I’ve read a lot of (mainly nonfiction) books this year! So, I thought I would compile a list and share some of my favorites with you if you were looking for some good reads. Plus, if you have any book recommendations you think I would like, please leave a comment and share them with me and all of us!

  1. The 4-Hour School Day by Durenda Wilson (April 2024)

I started keeping a record of my top books of 2024 in April, but I wish I had started at the start of the year because I know I read some good ones, I just can’t quite remember all of them!

I’ve really enjoyed listening to this author’s podcast and reading her books. They are so encouraging to the homeschool mom, which I plan to be very soon! This book talks about what we really need in education – an unhurried approach in the loving and safe environment of the home! (I also love her book The Unhurried Homeschooler)

The reason I enjoyed it so much this year was because it reminded me to slow down and enjoy these years with my children. I am educating my children for life, and skills that can’t be measured on a standardized test. I love her analogy of the greenhouse effect and it is something I will remind myself of for years to come.

My goals in these early years of home education (if you can even call it that yet as my oldest is almost 4) are: providing a simple, consistent routine; inviting my children to do my daily activities with me; slowing down to allow them the chance to ask questions; and creating the life I want to have each day with my children by setting the example.

  1. The Real Simple Method to Organizing Every Room: And How To Keep It That Way by The Editors of Real Simple (May 2024)

I really enjoyed the tips of this book and how it is laid out. As I consider moving into our new house later this year, and I already know the basic information on decluttering, I want to focus on organizing the new house well.

I love that this book has information on not just organizing but maintaining it and finding creative solutions for small spaces. There are also lots of tips on keeping the space clean and inviting. The pictures are so helpful and relatable. I’ll have to read it again for reminders once we officially move in.

  1. Far Beyond Gold: Running from Fear to Faith by Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (July 2024)

This book was encouraging to read as not many people in the spotlight choose to follow Christ, and do it genuinely! When I saw an interview of Sydney sharing about her book before the Olympics began I knew I had to read it.

I was skeptical reading it, I’ll be honest. Many people claim the name of “Christian” these days without actually making God and the Bible the true authorities of their lives. After reading her book I can tell that Sydney is someone who truly pursues Christ each day!

It was fun to read about her love story with her husband and how he played a vital role in sharing the gospel with her. Sydney used to be crippled by fear and anxiety when she faced competition on the track, but now she gives it all back to the Lord and runs for His glory!

It’s a book I will continue to recommend, especially to other athletes, as it shares how we can fully trust God and give Him our lives completely!

  1. 8 Errors Parents Make and How to Avoid Them by Michael Brock (July 2024 – Top Books of 2024)

A podcast I enjoy listening to recommended this book and so I decided to check it out. It was actually a really great book because it combined so many parenting philosophies that I have heard over the years from family and other authors. I found it helpful to have someone put all that information together in one book after pulling the concepts and ideas from other people (that are all based on Biblical principles.)

It helped me recognize some areas where we are weak in our parenting and strive to correct those. I appreciated the honest, brutal truths from Scripture and also very tangible ways to implement those each day. It’s a book that is staying on our bookshelf!

  1. Until the Streetlights Come On: How a Return to Play Brightens Our Present and Prepares Kids for an Uncertain Future by Ginny Yurich (August 2024)

I loved reading this book because it was such a wonderful reminder to me of what truly matters concerning the education of my children: outdoor play and boredom for creativity! I desire a slow-paced life and yet I still compare myself to other moms. They are teaching their children to read already or ordering curriculum before they are ready. Instead, I want to enjoy these little years and let learning come naturally!

We build our family culture, and a slow-paced life is something that needs to be fought for in today’s world. I am choosing to be intentional with these things thanks to the encouragement of this book! I highly recommend it to all other moms.

  1. Swimming Against the Current: Fighting for Common Sense in a World That’s Lost its Mind by Riley Gaines (August 2024 – Top Books of 2024)

I was so excited when I saw this book on the “New Books” shelf at my library! I know Riley’s story and have heard her on several podcasts, but I didn’t know all the details that she shared in this book.

I am so proud of everything she is advocating for, all the research she included, and all the details regarding the harm of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports. It was a great reminder for me, that while I may not be facing the same hate she is currently facing, times are changing, and normal, everyday persecution of Christians is coming quickly!

  1. House Rules: How to Decorate for Every Home, Style, and Budget by Myquillyn Smith (August 2024)

With the excitement of having a brand-new house to decorate and enjoy this year, I have read so many home design books. Some of them just seem unrealistic for a homesteading mom of young children or the design tips are hard to implement in our very cabin-esque house.

This book was by far my favorite to read and actually apply the principles! Some of my favorite tips are “combine the opposites” where she shares that to live in a rustic cabin without it feeling like Cracker Barrel, add in some shiny, modern, reflective, and light pieces to intentionally balance it all out. Also “respect your boss” (which would be our wood walls, floors, and ceiling interior) and “pattern fills a room.” This is where I will need to focus on neutralizing the room instead of adding more pattern because of the cabin-style and large amount of wood elements.

I also shared about this book in this blog post!

  1. Really Very Crunchy: A Beginner’s Guide to Removing Toxins from Your Life without Adding Them to Your Personality by Emily Morrow (August 2024)

This book was so fun and cute to read, especially since I have seen the author’s comical Instagram reels! While the information on toxins was very beginner-level and nothing new to me, it was fun to read about her experiences with how we interact with others when it comes to these things.

I appreciated her take on being kind, not judgmental, and yet still providing information where necessary when in conversation. It was a unique take on the growing trend of being toxic-free and provided a great perspective on not making it your idol or dumping your opinions on others.

  1. The 100 Most Asked Questions about God and the Bible: Scripture’s Answers on Sin, Salvation, Sexuality, End Times, Heaven, & More by S. Michael Houdmann (August 2024)

I have enjoyed reading different Biblical arguments and information on GotQuestions.org over the years. When I saw that they compiled some of those questions into a book I was excited to read it!

I’d have to say the most impactful questions for me were “What is the difference between sheol, hades, hell, the lake of fire, paradise, and Abraham’s bosom?”, “Did Jesus go to hell between His death and resurrection?” and “What happens after death?”. I had never considered these differences in places and that there is actually more than just heaven and hell but also a “sheol.”

Also, the section about end times was so helpful and a great reminder of things that are often difficult to understand.

  1. The Opt-Out Family: How to Give Your Kids What Technology Can’t by Erin Loechner (September 2024 – Top Books of 2024)

What a beautiful book on reminding parents that we need to know our children better than the algorithm does! That we have the power to opt out of this technology-deep world and choose real-world experiences every day!

A few months ago I got off of social media. Then after listening to a podcast interview with this author, it pushed me to completely delete all my social media accounts, and wow how liberating it was! I knew I wanted to read her book right away to stay firm in being an opt-out family!

I loved her constant reminders of how real-world things truly make the impacts we need in our families – a shoulder squeeze, eye contact, boredom for creativity. That’s why it’s one of my top books of 2024. How refreshing life is when we are invested in it fully and completely!

  1. Raising Amazing: Bringing Up Kids Who Love God, Like Their Family, and Do the Dishes without Being Asked by Monica Swanson (October 2024)

This book was so solid! It reminded me of all the important things to focus on each day, especially when it comes to parenting. That includes keeping God first, our marriage a priority, and raising our children to have good character.

But beyond that, it was helpful practically. I was reminded to do things like allowing natural consequences (and giving consequences) to teach our children life lessons. Also, keeping watch over the influences on our children, being able to say no, letting our children face adversity, and preparing them for spiritual battles were some more good reminders. I appreciated the perspective of the dad and one of their sons at the end of each chapter. I have also enjoyed the other books by this author: Boy Mom, Becoming Homeschoolers, and all of her resources!

  1. The Mountain Rose Herbs Book of Natural Body Care: 68 Simple Recipes for Health and Beauty by Shawn Donnille (November 2024)

I love purchasing from this company so when I saw that this book came out I was excited to read it! But I also enjoyed the first few chapters where they go into detail on ingredients and how to properly DIY herbs.

  1. Revolutionary Parenting: Raising Your Kids To Become Spiritual Champions, What the Research Shows Really Works by George Barna (November 2024)

I have to say I think this might be my favorite parenting book to date, which really surprised me. It’s not a book you quickly hear recommended or see on book lists. Yet, I think, as the author describes, that the research behind this book really does make it stand out from all the others. The author doesn’t give a formula to follow (because there isn’t one) and instead gives key things to consider, or pieces to the puzzle, that you want to make sure you aren’t missing.

Parenting is all about relationships – our relationship with God, our spouse, and with our kids. These each have to be real, intentional, authentic, and based on love and trust. From that comes setting rules at the right pace and consistent discipline, distinct to each child. You are modeling everything for your children!

Especially the top 10 mushrooms that this book focuses on – reishi, chaga, cordyceps, lion’s mane, shiitake, maitake, turkey tail, enoki, oyster mushroom, and tremella. And next, I’m excited to try some of the recipes in this book to incorporate them into our meals more often!

  1. Triggers: Exchanging Parents’ Angry Reactions for Gentle Biblical Responses by Amber Lia and Wendy Speake (December 2024)

It goes through many practical things that affect us as moms, and how we can respond Biblically in each one of them. This is a book I will be purchasing and keeping on my bookshelf for years to come!

I wasn’t sure if I’d finish this book before publishing my top books of 2024, or even if I’d want to include it in my list of top books of 2024, so I was glad to finish it just before the new year!

If you’ve read any of the books in my first blog post, The 7 Best Cookbooks On Using Sourdough and Natural Yeast, then you’ve read some of the best cookbooks on sourdough breads already!

But, as I discovered more cookbooks on sourdough breads, I couldn’t help but want to share those as well. So, here are seven more wonderful cookbooks to explore as you make sourdough bread, whether you are a beginner or an expert!

I make the same freshly milled, whole-wheat, organic einkorn sourdough bread every week for my family, and we love it! But I still like to mix things up once in a while which is why these cookbooks are so handy. They have fantastic recipes for all things sourdough, not just your basic bread loaf.

Let’s check them out…

  1. Fermented: A Beginner’s Guide to Making Your Own Sourdough, Yogurt, Sauerkraut, Kefir, Kimchi and More by Charlotte Pike

I think that every new sourdough baker should first read a book on fermentation before getting started. If I had not understood what fermentation was or how vital it was to my diet, I would have given up quickly on the process of sourdough.

Fermented foods are all around us, yet we often don’t even realize it! This cookbook is great for beginners and any novice when it comes to fermenting any food. You will first learn how to make fruit and vegetable ferments like sauerkraut and kimchi. Then, dairy ferments like yogurt and then beans and legumes like miso soup and black beans before diving into sourdough baking with 11 different recipes.

There is also a chapter on drinks like milk kefir and mead. Plus, you’ll learn about preserves like vinegars, pickles, and chutney. All the chapters have the perfect information for a beginner and are simple to understand!

  1. Flour Power: The Practice and Pursuit of Baking Sourdough Bread by Tara Jensen

This is one of the cookbooks on sourdough breads that have so many helpful aspects to it. You will learn all the bread lingo, the anatomy of the wheat berry, different types and classifications of wheat, home-milled flour, storing grains and flour, bread-making tools, plus everything about fermenting it into sourdough!

I love the encouragement and practical tips this author gives for beginners. She even has a first basic recipe called Workweek Bread, a half whole grain and half white flour daily loaf. The recipes all have fantastic step-by-step directions and pictures to show you how to do all the shaping!

Half the recipes focus on whole grain flour and desem, a Flemish style of leavening. It is so nutritious! This is a great book for any sourdough baker because you can continually level up your baking as you work through the recipes in the book without feeling overwhelmed.

  1. Whole Grain Sourdough at Home: The Simple Way to Bake Artisan Bread with Whole Wheat, Einkorn, Spelt, Rye and Other Ancient Grains by Elaine Boddy

As I’ve shared before, I love baking bread with einkorn flour. As someone who had been gluten-free for years, I wasn’t sure if my body could handle einkorn, since it does have some minimal gluten in it. However, when I was able to adjust quite well, I became hooked on only making sourdough einkorn bread at home (freshly milled and organic too).

If we are going to go to all the trouble to make our sourdough bread, why not make it as healthy as possible? That’s where ancient grains come in. They have so many added benefits, but they do need a bit more help when baking them.

A cookbook like this one is a great place to start because we are so accustomed to the hybridized flours that are available to us now. Ancient grains have not been modified to have more gluten and stronger structures, therefore they are much more sticky and fragile to work with. However, the benefits are worth the slightly bigger learning curve.

I encourage you to try cooking with ancient grains with this cookbook! It even includes a master recipe in the beginning to keep things very simple and easy to use.

What a simple and easy book to feel inspired to begin baking with sourdough! It has options to make rye, wheat or spelt, oat, potato, lentil, or wild yeast sourdough starter. I was so intrigued by the potato, lentil, and wild yeast versions as all that was new to me!

There are 29 recipes, the perfect amount to try everything without feeling overwhelmed like some of the other cookbooks on sourdough breads. The interesting recipes include carrot bread, lentil bread, potato bread, oat bread, olive bread, and rosemary bread! The recipes come from Europe which is why they are unique yet so delicious.

Next, you dive into rustic bread recipes. I love that the author included a whole-wheat bread option and shared his favorite loaves of bread from Latin America!

The second half of the cookbook is enriched breads, with more ingredients to indulge into. This is one of the cookbooks on sourdough breads that is simple, yet has several unique twists so you can experience flavors from around the world. It’s a great option for a beginner or someone who has a bit of experience under their belt!

I think I truly first realized how different men are than women when I got married. But, now that I have a son who is toddler age I feel the need even more to read Christian books on raising boys. Their minds are so different than girls!

And how beautiful that is! I want to do a great job raising my son to be the man that God created him to be. Of course, that begins with prayer and meditating on Scripture. But, it also comes from reading new research and information that comes out on the brains of boys.

I also enjoy hearing from other moms and their experiences. While boys all have different personalities and preferences, some qualities are undeniable to who God made them to be. These Christian books on raising boys have helped me discover that even more so!

Let’s check them out…

  1. Raising Boys to Men: A Simple, Mercifully Short Book on Raising and Homeschooling Boys by Durenda Wilson

I love Durenda Wilson because she shares so much wonderful wisdom on motherhood, parenting, and homeschooling in her books and on her podcast! This book is no exception. It is simple and straight to the point on everything you need to know about raising boys to men that love and serve God with their whole heart.

As moms, we feel lost when it comes to little boys’ minds simply because we have never been little boys ourselves. God made them to climb, build, wrestle, and take risks all day long. It’s scary, intimidating, and upsetting at times yet with the Lord’s help we can raise them to live into their boy-ness with love and respect!

  1. The Minds of Boys: Saving Our Sons from Falling Behind in School and Life by Michael Gurian

This is not a Christian book, and it focuses on regular schooling, not homeschooling, yet I had to include it on this list. It was so fascinating to read about how different boys’ minds are from girls. It also encouraged me even more in the decision to homeschool our son in particular (and the author agrees that boys benefit greatly from homeschooling).

The school system is set up in favor of female minds. The statistics in the book prove it quite easily. Plus, boys need an environment where they can wrestle, move, tinker, take risks, and explore. They learn through doing! This book provides so many ways for parents to help children, despite their schooling environment.

The book also covers our current crisis (which has only gotten worse since the book was published): how boys learn, how you can teach boys better throughout each stage of life, motivating boys to learn, and so much more. While this book is becoming dated now, the information is still so relevant and extremely important to understand!

  1. Strong Mothers, Strong Sons: Lessons Mothers Need to Raise Extraordinary Men by Meg Meeker

This book taught me so much about boys and why they do what they do! It covers all the necessary topics from emotions, sex, attacking you, being there while also letting go, and so much more.

I also appreciate that faith and how laying a solid Christian groundwork can make the biggest difference in a boy’s life was discussed in a whole chapter. My husband can attest to this himself. His testimony shares how when he went astray in his teen years, having Bible verses and songs memorized helped him return back to the truth he was grounded in.

An impactful line from the book for me was on page 16, “As we think of ways to express affection, it is helpful to remember that while women bond through verbal communication, boys bond to others by doing things with them.” I never knew that focusing on quality time could impact the relationship I have with my son so much!

  1. Boys Should Be Boys: 7 Secrets to Raising Healthy Sons by Meg Meeker

Here is another book by Meg Meeker that dives deeper into the topic of boys. The seven secrets are: encourage your son, understand his needs, recognize he was made for the outdoors, he needs rules, he needs virtue, teach him the big questions of life, and remember that you are the most important person in his life.

These topics are explored in great depth. I appreciate the author covering topics of all ages and sensitive topics like pornography and religion. At the end of the book, there are Ten Tips For Making Sure You Get It Right.

These tips are genuine and deep. It’s about setting the example, being willing to encourage their masculinity and discipline them correctly, teaching them to serve and helping them find their purpose. Our boys need us, and while the role isn’t easy, it’s worth it!

  1. Bringing Up Boys: Practical Advice and Encouragement for Those Shaping the Next Generation of Men by James C. Dobson

This was such a fun book to read! It made me laugh so often reading about all the silly things boys do, yet it also changed how I view boys. I give them more grace in some areas because I understand their point of view better. (“They value change, opportunity, risk, speculation, and adventure.” Pg. 27)

However, we should also demand excellence from them in other areas. The author discusses the differences between boys and girls, the harm surrounding boys today, the need for a father, the role of a mother, busyness and isolation, homosexuality, single parents and grandparents, competition, feminism and heroism, school, predators, staying close, discipline, and more!

There is also an amazing question-and-answer section at the end of each chapter that goes into detail on some hard topics, making this one of the best Christian books on raising boys! Plus, it all comes from a genuine Biblical perspective with Bible verses and topics to point you back to what truly matters.

While I would like to think that I know a great deal about interior home design by simply browsing Pinterest, I know that I need quite a bit of help! That’s why I am so grateful for these interior design books for beginners!

Each book offers a unique perspective on interior design, specifically home design in my case. We just finished building our own house on our homestead and I feel so inadequate when it comes to decorating our house and making it our home. It is a unique house in that it almost feels like a cabin.

However, the house design I am going for is a blend of country, rustic, and vintage feel, with some cabin elements sprinkled in. I quickly turned to several interior design books, including the ones in this blog post as well, to help me get inspiration and tips! These books each offered me different elements to consider when I decorate the home we built.

These are great interior design books for beginners like myself to learn about basic concepts, understand the rules and laws of nature, and make your home feel more welcoming and inviting with a few small changes.

  1. Natural Style: Decorating With an Earth-Friendly Point of View (The Green House) by Janet Sobesky

I just love the opening line of this book: “A home should be a safe haven – a place where you and your loved ones not only live, but also thrive. Decorating naturally lets you accomplish that.”

As a mom, that’s exactly what I am looking for, beauty and practicality together to form a perfect space for my family. I love that this book talks about how to keep your home toxin-free, use eco-friendly materials, and how to choose natural items for your home.

Filling your home with natural things just seems to add a new level to your personal style while keeping things cozy and simple. You’ll also learn how to choose the right colors, textures, and proportions in each room of the house.

  1. Styled: Secrets for Arranging Rooms, from Tabletops to Bookshelves by Emily Henderson

This is a wonderful book to help you discover what your home style is, how to style it with basic design concepts, and take inspiration from lots of various photos. The book makes all this easy with a home-style quiz, design lingo definitions, and easy steps to follow!

Plus, the majority of the book has pictures of each room of the home with information on why the style of the homes work so well together. It really does come down to basic concepts like balance, texture, layering, etc. It was impactful for me to have each photo explained so well.

As someone who is seeking a rustic, country, yet vintage style of our home, there was a lot that I was able to learn and pull from this book! But, even if your style is opposite of that, there is just as much in here for you as well.

  1. House Beautiful Style Secrets: What Every Room Needs by Sophie Donelson

While this book isn’t extremely practical because the images are not realistic to everyday home life, they do provide ideas of how to place your items and style your home. The book focuses on eight things that every room needs: a splash of unexpected color, a nod to the past, a grand gesture, glitter and gleam, to embrace the great outdoors, something that says “touch me”, something that speaks only to you, and a “wow” moment.

The book comprises of pictures with a bit of commentary on how the rooms display each of these things. It is fun to look at all the different types of styles if you need inspiration.

  1. Living with Pattern: Color, Texture, and Print at Home by Rebecca Atwood

What a fun book to read! I have to say that this book really pulled me out of my comfort zone, but in the best way. I’m not usually someone who gravitates towards things that are big, bold, or stand out, but after reading this book I feel encouraged to include some things with those personalities in my home.

The book begins with teaching basic aspects of color, texture, and pattern when it comes to home design. The majority of the book is then going through each room of the home with multiple examples of how these design elements play out. At the end, there are fun DIY projects you can try to add more color, texture, or pattern to your space.

I also enjoyed reading the author’s book Living with Color: Inspiration and How-Tos to Brighten Up Your Home. It was a super easy book to read to understand how color plays out in my home.

The first 100 pages are all about the design process. The next 200 focus on the elements of the room. Then there are room-by-room considerations and an insider’s guide to design documents and procedures. I certainly did not read this book all in one sitting as it is overwhelming, so take your time as if you were attending a class on the subject and this was your textbook!

I love the concept of this book: compare 35 different homes from around the world to see what slow living means in each one. As someone who strives for a slow life, I loved seeing all the different homes!

The house styles are all very neutral, minimal, and what some might describe as “bland” looking. If that’s your style, you can find lots of inspiration here. It’s cool to read about each family or person in their space and put a face to the home they designed! I appreciate that the author included family spaces too.

As a mom, I want to create a beautiful home that also functions well for my family. These books on creating a beautiful yet practical family home help me do just that!

Too many home design books are discouraging to moms because they are unrelatable. Just as I previously shared in this blog post, we have toddlers running around, pets requiring spaces, and school supplies dropped at the front door. We can’t have designer houses because they won’t function well for us. As I’ve gone through my motherhood journey I’ve wondered if I could have a beautiful home or if I had to be content with whatever we had for the sake of family life.

Yes, your home can be both! You may just need to get a bit creative, prudent, and minimalist to make it all happen. These books helped me on my journey of creating a beautiful home despite the demands of several family members in the house, and I know they can help you too!

Let’s check them out…

  1. Elements of Family Style: Elegant Spaces for Everyday Life by Erin Gates

This is such a beautiful yet practical book for moms to read! It is encouraging to know that our homes can be stylish and functional at the same time, especially when we apply the tips from this author.

The book walks you through each room of the house with beautiful images, tips on what to invest in and what to get cheap, layout ideas, and several other things to consider based on the room. It is a simple read yet one of the most genuine of all the books on creating a beautiful yet practical family home!

The design principles are easy to understand, and the pictures are inspiring, not ignoring keep features of a family home. There is even a huge design resource buying guide at the back of the book.

  1. Pretty Prudent Home: Your Ultimate Guide to Creating a Beautiful Family Home by Jacinda Boneau

While this book is a bit dated now, I enjoyed its wonderful tips for creating a beautiful family home. You will get to see how other people create a prudent home, find your style, define your palette, and try some DIY’s.

In fact, most of this book is just various DIY projects that you can try yourself or use as inspiration to create something for your home! So often we think that creating a beautiful home means going out to the store and buying lots of modern things.

But, in creating a home that is special and unique to us, it is being prudent in what we have. When you decorate your home with things you create and make yourself, it makes it that much more special (and often practical!). Our home is mostly wood my husband milled himself and created for our spaces. It is so much more special (and great for our budget) knowing that we made all of it ourselves!

This is one of the books on creating a beautiful yet practical family home that focuses on what resources you can use to create it all yourself! I love that it helps us switch our mindset from “What do I need to buy that’s trendy now?” to “What can I use to make this space both beautiful and functional?”.

  1. Made for Living: Collected Interiors for All Sorts of Styles by Amber Lewis

Need a simple book to walk you through some easy design features of your home? I love the layout of this book, as it is so simple and unique compared to other design books I have read.

The author walks you through her mind when she is designing a home. First, she looks at color and teaches you what to know about when choosing paint colors in your home. The examples are very inspiring!

After the paint is picked out, you will look at the details of your home. This includes tile, hardware, textiles, furniture, décor pieces etc. How you put them all together can make it or break it for the design of your home.

Then look at the space and flow of your home. How do the shapes and proportions work together? Lastly, the art of styling. I appreciated this chapter because I just need someone to explain it to me very simply because I have never been taught how to style my home, yet I know it is important.

  1. The Art of Home: A Designer Guide to Creating an Elevated Yet Approachable Home by Shea McGee

I have to admit I was skeptical of this book at first. I wasn’t sure that it would be one of the books on creating a beautiful yet practical family home because some of the images seemed out of my league. However, the author begins by first walking you through the process of designing your beautiful and functional home.

It begins with finding and creating your mood, looking at the architecture of your home, and then designing a board where you can see your vision come to life. You next pick out your finishes and furniture before styling it all.

The author then takes you through each room of the house where she provides some tips and then lots of inspirational photos. The key when flipping through this book is not to become discouraged that your spaces don’t look like the photos, but instead take the tips and be creative to apply them to your spaces!

The guides in the back of the book are also very helpful. They include upholstery fabrics, pattern mixing, seating styling, rug sizing, mixing metals, countertops, lighting heights, paint, and so much more!

The author also touches on important topics that reflect why we put things in our homes the way we do. This includes minimalism, nostalgia, individualism, atmosphere, perfectionism, habits, and gratefulness. It is one of the books on creating a beautiful yet practical family home that has wonderful design inspiration while also diving into deep heart topics making it a fascinating book to read!

As a Christian, I view Lent as a time to renew my mind from distractions, slow down, and refocus on the values of the kingdom of God. One way to help with that, alongside reading the Bible, is to read Lent books for Christians.

While many people use Lent as a time to give something up or give to those in need, it’s not about what we do but what changes in our hearts. Jesus came to overcome our sin and conquer death on the cross! He rose again and now reigns again in glory! That changes everything.

To refocus your heart this Lent season and remember Christ’s true love and forgiveness, spend some time reading His word and one of these Lent books for Christians. They have been an encouragement for me and valuable resources!

Here’s some to get you started…

  1. Behold the King of Glory: A Narrative of the Life, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ by Russ Ramsey

This is an amazing book to read through the Lent season, as there are 40 chapters, one for each day. Each chapter is short and simple yet portrays the key events of Jesus’ time on earth as the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John recount.

I appreciate the heart-probing questions that encourage me to think of the scripture passages in ways I had never considered before. What was this character feeling during this time? How does Jesus communicate to the culture back then? I also appreciate seeing how all the gospels work together to tell the greatest story ever told!

The chapters each give a Bible passage to read first and then the narrative to follow. Always read the scripture passage first to understand where the author may be taking some liberties, as mentioned in the preface.

You may also want to check out The Passion of the King of Glory (Retelling the Story Series) by the same author as another option for lent books for Christians. These books are a wonderful way to prepare your heart for Easter as you recount the life, death, and resurrection of our Savior!

  1. Bread and Wine: Readings for Lent and Easter by Various Authors

This is a book put together by editors who ordered various Lent and Easter teachings from leaders of the faith. The sections are based on the themes of Invitation, Temptation, Passion, Crucifixion, Resurrection, and New Life. The days are undated so you can read it again year after year.

Some of my favorites to read in the book are from Amy Carmichael, C.S. Lewis, Oswald Chambers, and Martin Luther. Your heart will be moved and transformed after you read each of these snippets from the various authors in the Lent season.

This is a powerful book and a wonderful resource to turn to for more to meditate on leading up to Easter.

  1. Word in the Wilderness: A poem a day for Lent and Easter by Malcolm Guite

I am typically not someone who reads poetry, especially when it comes to Bible study and meditation. But reading this book reminded me of how helpful poetry can be in slowing down and savoring what I am learning!

The introduction of this book clarifies the journey the author takes you on as you dive into the Lent season. You will understand why Lent is ordered the way it is and how it can change your heart if you allow it to! After each poem is a few pages of reflection and reminders of prayer and meditation for your day.

  1. It Is Finished: A 40-Day Pilgrimage Back to the Cross by Charles Martin

This book truly takes you a on journey. It includes lots of descriptive words to make you feel like you are there with the others watching Jesus on the cross. You will be reminded of so many wonderful Biblical events and the meaning behind all of them as you read this book during Lent.

The forty days are divided into four parts. Part 1 is “The Origin Story of What Jesus Finished At The Cross”, Part 2 is “Why Blood Was The Only Way To Settle Our Debt”, Part 3 is “But Why Jesus’ Blood?” and Part 4 is “What Was Exchanged At The Cross?”.

This book is unique in that it writes out the scripture for you in red text. Each day has a scripture passage with a few pages of reflection, including a part titled “Walk With Me Back To The Cross.” Then “Pray With Me” and a prayer follows. Lastly, it closes with a “And God Responds” section with more scripture.

It is one of the Lent books that reference the whole Bible as you specifically study the death of Jesus. The author does not shy away from hard topics and the great depth of the topic at hand.

BEST LENT BOOKS FOR CHRISTIANS

  1. Preparing for Easter by C. S. Lewis

This book is small but powerful. This collection of works by C.S. Lewis is perfect for Christians to read as they prepare for Easter as it reflects on Jesus as a whole! It is comprised of 50 devotional readings, only a page or two long.

Each reading follows the Lent calendar, with the first starting on Ash Wednesday and the last being Easter Sunday. The table of contents makes it very easy to follow the calendar days for that year. Each day has scripture readings before the excerpt from C.S. Lewis, with a note of where the excerpt came from.

I appreciate how well thought out this book is and that it is completely C.S. Lewis’ works without any other commentary. It is a wonderful book to read each Easter season to dwell deeply on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus!

When I started looking into home design books to help me with decorating our new house, I was so overwhelmed! There are so many to choose from, but I resonated with these design books for moms because they were actually achievable and relatable.

Some other design books that I share in this blog post are certainly helpful. However, it is hard to picture my exact situation in all the perfectly staged and lavish home pictures. As moms we want, and deserve, both beautiful and practical! These home design books for moms made me feel empowered to design a house that the whole family would enjoy. 1. House Rules: How to Decorate for Every Home, Style, and Budget by Myquillyn Smith

I have shared some of the author’s previous books in this blog post, so I was so excited to see this new book on home design come out. I especially noticed how practical it was for moms to pick up and learn quickly what changes their homes need to be more relaxing and cozier!

The simple “rules” or tips are tidbits of information that work in any space. Some examples are contrast, groupings of threes, layout, big and bold, etc. Plus, I think every mom can appreciate the budget-friendly approach!

Often we just get bored of our space or want it to look a bit more put together without buying new things, hiring an interior designer, or spending months evaluating without making a decision. This is one of the home design books for moms that makes creating a beautiful home possible without all of that!

  1. Homebody: A Guide to Creating Spaces You Never Want to Leave by Joanna Gaines

I have to admit that I was skeptical to pick this book up at first. I wasn’t sure that it would be relatable to creating a cozy and practical home as a mom. However, the Pinterest style of the book, with lots of pictures, was actually very helpful!

I say Pinterest style because the images certainly are very idealistic; however, the themes that you can uncover in the images are not! So, while I’m sure my house will never look as perfect and put together as these featured houses, it does inspire me!

First, the book walks you through several design styles including the key descriptors of each. Styles include modern, farmhouse, rustic, industrial, etc. Then, it shows you how those styles play out in each room of the house. It helped me narrow down what I should be focusing on if I want my style to be consistent throughout my entire house. As a mom, I also appreciate that kid’s spaces and mudroom/bonus areas are included!

  1. Home Therapy: Interior Design for Increasing Happiness, Boosting Confidence, and Creating Calm: An Interior Design Book by Anita Yokota

In this book, the author, a licensed marriage and family therapist, helps you set up your home to make you the best possible version of yourself. It was almost a lightbulb moment for me when I realized that so many things do begin at home, so why not put lots of effort into designing it correctly?

The author breaks it down into four categories: the individual domain (establish a strong identity), the organizational domain (organize your things), the communal domain (connect with others in your home), and the renewal domain (practice self-care).

The book has lots of beautiful pictures with lots of text, making it easy for moms especially to envision how they can change their space. I found the book very practical to real life even diving deep into topics of meal prep, colors, and sleep.

  1. The Interior Design Handbook: Furnish, Decorate, and Style Your Space by Frida Ramstedt

I consider this book an encyclopedia of all things design! It is not like a typical design book just filled with inspirational (and often unattainable) home décor pictures. It felt like I hired someone to teach me everything I needed to know or I purchased a class where I could learn about everything related to home design.

While there are no pictures, just some sketches, it is still so easy for the average mom to read and learn from! It has all the basic rules and principles you need to be aware of in your home to fully enjoy it. This includes colors, lighting, measurements, and all the tips and tricks you could imagine.

Take this book in strides you can remember the design elements you have learned about. Otherwise, if you try to read this book in one sitting you will become overwhelmed. It is one of the best home design books for moms who want to do it right!

  1. The Color Scheme Bible: Inspirational Palettes for Designing Home Interiors by Anna Starmer

What color do I choose for my walls that will go well with my floors and my accent colors? The color questions can be scary and intense when it comes to designing our homes to be beautiful. Especially for me, as our house is a cabin style that is all wood! How would I know which stain colors to choose?

This book is 200 color palettes with text next to each one as a reference guide. It is organized into pinks, reds, oranges and browns, yellows, greens, blues, violets, and neutrals and grays. You can see a main color paired with slightly differing tones, accent colors, and highlight colors. If you follow the guide, all the colors in your room will flow together seamlessly! There are also a few chapters on color theory and tips on using color so you understand a little bit more about why certain colors are paired together.

You can even take the book to the paint store to color match. I love that the book suggests painting a sample area and living with it for a day or two before committing to painting the whole room. I have seen first-hand how a new coat of paint can truly change up a space!
